Dear ,

And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. Jeremiah 3:15 (KJV)

Being the pastor of a local congregation is a high calling and with it comes great responsibility.  Unfortunately, along with that calling, unrealistic expectations are often placed upon them, and their families, by the people they serve.  Many times the pastor and family are placed upon an idealistic pedestal, expected to live their lives to perfection that none of us could ever hope to aspire.  Other times they are cut down and criticized for every word they say, thing they do (or don't do), way they dress, and any number of other perceived infractions.

It's not surprising that several surveys indicate that a great number of our pastors face very real discouragement as they strive to serve.  Pastor and author Henry Nouwen wrote this concerning the real need of local pastors...

... there is little praise and much criticism in the church today, and who can live for long in such a climate without slipping into some type of  depression?

What does your pastor need from you today?  Could some encouragement from you make a difference in the life of the one charged to be your spiritual leader?   The month of October is recognized as Pastor Appreciation Month and would be an excellent time to begin expressing your gratitude and support in tangible ways to your pastor and family.
Here are six suggestions to get you started....

  1. Pray for your pastor and pastor's family and let them know. (Send a card or note expressing that you prayed for them and for their ministry)
  2. Tell your pastor how you have been impacted through their ministry.  Send a note or email explaining how some guidance from a recent sermon mad e a real difference in your life.
  3. Give some small gift of appreciation to your pastor such as a gift card to a restaurant or a prepaid debit card.
  4. Support your pastor as they lead your congregation.  Let them know that you trust them and believe in their leadership. Let them know you understand how difficult pastoral leadership can be.
  5. Accept your pastor for who they are without placing unrealistic expectations on their behavior and lifestyle.  Sure, they have a high standard due to their position but they are people just like you and me.  As such, they are prone to the same failures in life as we all experience.  Treat them with the same Grace that you'd welcome and expect from them.
  6. Do something nice for the pastor's family.  Remember their birthdays and anniversaries.  Recognize their accomplishments.  Cut them some slack when they make mistakes.  Use your imagination to bless them unexpectedly.
Always remember: Preachers are people too!

Blessings,
Steve <><

Everyone has had that moment--we see a need in our church, our school, our neighborhood, our family, or our world and we think, "Someone really should get to work on that," never imagining that "we "might be the answer to that need. We don't have the time, the expertise, the money. We've got careers to manage, bills to pay, meals to prepare, and way too much laundry piling up. Besides, who are we to think we can change the world?

In this encouraging and empowering book, Deidra Riggs calls women to accept God's invitation to join him in making a difference right where they are, regardless of their current life stage. She shows women that they were created with a purpose and with the capacities to fulfill that purpose. And she reminds readers that it's not up to us to fix" "the world, but it "is" up to us to join God--and the rest of his people--in his redemptive work.

For when God calls and the timid reader looks over her shoulder and answers, "Who, me?" God always emphatically answers, "Yes, you."

The wilderness. Maybe you know it well.

The Israelites sure did. After all, they spent forty years wandering the desert. Victories were scarce. Progress was slow. They were free from Pharaoh but not free from fear. Saved but stuck.

Sounds a lot like midlife misery. Caught in a rut. Stalled out. Running on empty. Are you mired in the same?

You can name the day you became a Christian and escaped Egypt. But you can't remember the last time you defeated a temptation or experienced an answered prayer. You're fighting the same battles you fought the day you came to Christ. You're out of Egypt, but Egypt's not out of you.

Isn't the Christian life supposed to be better than this?

Jesus offers abundant joy. Yet you live with oppressive grief. The epistles speak of grace. You shoulder guilt. You are more than a conqueror yet are commonly conquered by temptation or weaknesses.

But there's good news. With God's help you can close the gap between the person you are and the person you want to be. Like Joshua and the Israelites, you can move from a wilderness existence into a promised inheritance.

This is God's vision for your life. You, at full throttle. You, as you were intended. You, as victor over the Jerichos and giants. You, minus the stumbles, hurts, and hate.

You and your Promised Land life.

"New York Times "bestselling author Max Lucado invites readers to leave the wilderness and discover a life defined by grace, refined by challenge, and aligned with a heavenly call. By studying the life of Joshua and the biblical book that bears his name, Lucado reveals God's promises for every step and reminds readers that God still fights for them.

God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk.

Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death.

In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

    Some Parting Fun...
A pastor places his order at the pet store: "I need at least 50 mice, 2000 ants and as many of those little silverfish you can get."

The clerk replies, "We can probably do that, but it might take some time. Mind if I ask why you are placing such an unusual order?"

The pastor replied, "I've accepted a call to another church and the congregation council told me to leave the parsonage the way I found it."
