Dear ,
This week is one of high significance to our Jewish friends. Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish New Year, was celebrated last Sunday, 9/13 and Yom Kippur, the day of atonement will be observed this coming Tuesday 9/22.
Rosh Hashanah is celebrated with a greeting, Shanah Tovah, which in Hebrew translates to "Have a good year." At synagogues, the shofar, a ram's horn, will be blown as it was in Biblical times calling a sacred assembly. Rosh Hashanah lasts two days and is the beginning of the ten day period of repentance and self-examination referred to as the "days of awe" which conclude on Yom Kippur.
One of the most sacred days of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur, is the Day of Atonement. It was on Yom Kippur that the priest woke early for ritual purification. He then put on special priestly garments, representing the sacredness of the holiday. After the initial preparation, the priest offered a bull as a sacrifice for both himself and his family. He then selected and consecrated two separate male goats, one as a sacrifice for God and the other which the community would later lead into the desert.
The priest took the blood from the bull and placed it upon the coals of the altar before entering into the inner room of the temple to sprinkle the blood upon the Ark of the Covenant. Then he sacrificed the Lord's goat on behalf of the nation before entering into the Holy of Holies to sprinkle the goat's blood upon the Ark. Finally, the priest placed some of the blood from the Lord's goat onto the second goat. The High Priest confessed the sins of the nation over the second goat and the people led the goat out into the wilderness. The removal of the second goat from the camp symbolized the removal of the nation's sins from Israel.
Do we still need an annual day of atonement? Of course not; Jesus paid the price for our sin in full, now and forever when he took our sin to the cross, giving himself as the blood sacrifice for our iniquity. If we only confess our sins and repent, He will forgive us of our sins and remember them no more.
Still, a time of reflection and self-examination is a good thing and should be observed regularly to allow the Holy Spirit to work within our hearts. Spending time in prayer and meditation will allow His will to be illuminated in our lives and will expose those things within our hearts that need to be surrendered to Him. Why not spend some time in quiet reflection this week seeking a closer relationship with the One who died for your transgressions.
Shanah Tovah!

Inspiring New Novel from the "Biggest Name in Amish Fiction"
Eva Esch and her sisters are in a predicament. With the passing of their widowed mother, Eva's older brother plans to move his growing family into the Eden Valley farmhouse where they all grew up, leaving little room for his three single sisters. Unless they marry within the year, the only apparent option is for two sisters to go to Indiana to live with an elderly great aunt. Eva hopes to be married, but she isn't sure she wants to give up her sweet shop for the life of a farmer's wife. And she can't see how her prospects would be any better in Indiana.
When younger sister Lily disappears in the night, leaving only a brief note, Eva fears she has been wooed away from the People by an outsider. And when Jed Stutzman, a young Amish buggy maker from Ohio, shows up at Eva's market stand in Lancaster with a photo of a Plain young woman, Eva's world begins to tilt. She feels powerfully drawn to the quietly charming stranger--but the woman in the forbidden photograph is no stranger at all...

The Case for Grace
|
The Case for a Creator explored the scientific evidence for God; The Case for Christ investigated the historical evidence for Jesus; The Case for Faith responded to eight major objections about Christianity; The Case for The Real Jesus refuted the current challenges to the Bible and Christ ... Now, in The Case for Grace, Lee Strobel crafts a compelling and highly personal experiential case for God, focusing on God's transforming work in the lives of men and women today.
Writing with unusual candor, Lee draws upon his own journey from atheism to Christianity to explore the depth and breadth of God's redeeming love for spiritually wayward people.
He travels thousands of miles to capture the inspiring stories of everyday people whose values have been radically changed and who have discovered the 'how' and 'why' behind God's amazing grace. You'll encounter racists, addicts, and even murderers who have found new hope and purpose. You'll meet once-bitter people who have received God's power to forgive those who have harmed them---and, equally amazing, people mired in guilt who have discovered that they can even forgive themselves.
Through it all, you will be encouraged as you see how God's grace can revolutionize your eternity and relationships... starting today.

Some Parting Fun...
|
Two Christians have lived very good, and also very healthy lives. They die, and go to heaven.
As they are walking along, marveling at the paradise around them, one turns to the other and says, "Wow! I never knew heaven was going to be as good as this!"
"Yeah", says the other, "And just think, if we hadn't eaten all that oat bran and bean sprouts we could have got here ten years sooner!"
