Dear ,

II Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Hard to believe that summer is winding down and kids are back in school.   Backpacks are stuffed with supplies and students are once again hitting the books to learn and grow.

The Bible is one book that we should never get tired of studying and learning from. Made up of Sixty-six books in one, we find many things to study including history, poetry, prophecy, and doctrine. The overarching theme of the Bible of course is the story of man's relationship to God and His plan for our redemption. Forty-four writers spanning over twenty centuries penned God's inspired Word applicable for all people for all time. Even though written thousands of years ago, the Bible gives us clear instruction on how to live successfully throughout our life's journey.

How long has it been since you really set aside time to study God's word? Have the activities of summer caused you to forget a daily time for reading and devotion? No matter what time of year, there are many outside influences to keep us from studying, but it's time to set the excuses aside and dig into His Word. As we transition from summer into fall I encourage you to find, or start, a Bible study group and dig into the Scripture. If you do, you'll have some fun, lots of fellowship, and blessings from God as you discover the truth He has waiting for you to discover.

Blessings,
Steve <><

    What's So Amazing about Grace?

In 1987, an IRA bomb buried Gordon Wilson and his twenty-year-old daughter beneath five feet of rubble. Gordon alone survived. And forgave.

He said of the bombers, "I have lost my daughter, but I bear no grudge. . . . I shall pray, tonight and every night, that God will forgive them. "His words caught the media's ear--and out of one man's grief, the world got a glimpse of grace.Grace is the church's great distinctive.

It's the one thing the world cannot duplicate, and the one thing it craves above all else--for only grace can bring hope and transformation to a jaded world. In What's So Amazing About Grace? award-winning author Philip Yancey explores grace at street level. If grace is God's love for the undeserving, he asks, then what does it look like in action?

And if Christians are its sole dispensers, then how are we doing at lavishing grace on a world that knows far more of cruelty and unforgiveness than it does of mercy?

Yancey sets grace in the midst of life's stark images, tests its mettle against horrific "ungrace." Can grace survive in the midst of such atrocities as the Nazi holocaust? Can it triumph over the brutality of the Ku Klux Klan?

Should any grace at all be shown to the likes of Jeffrey Dahmer, who killed and cannibalized seventeen young men?Grace does not excuse sin, says Yancey, but it treasures the sinner. True grace is shocking, scandalous.

It shakes our conventions with its insistence on getting close to sinners and touching them with mercy and hope. It forgives the unfaithful spouse, the racist, the child abuser. It loves today's AIDS-ridden addict as much as the tax collector of Jesus' day.

In his most personal and provocative book ever, Yancey offers compelling, true portraits of grace's life-changing power. He searches for its presence in his own life and in the church. He asks, How can Christians contend graciously with moral issues that threaten all they hold dear?

And he challenges us to become living answers to a world that desperately wants to know, What's So Amazing About Grace?

    Some Parting Fun...
A newly appointed young preacher was contacted by the local funeral director to hold a graveside committal service at a small country cemetery in Iowa. There was to be no funeral, just the committal, because sadly, the deceased had no family or friends left in Iowa.

The young pastor started early to the cemetery, but lost his way on the long back roads. After backtracking many miles, he finally arrived, a half-hour late. The hearse was no where in sight, and the workmen were relaxing under a near-by tree, eating their lunch.

The pastor went to the open grave and found that the vault lid was already in place. He took out his book and read the service.

As he returned to his car, one of the workmen paused between bites and said, "Think we should have told him that's a septic tank."
