Dear ,
As you sing Hosanna this Palm Sunday, do you really know what you are singing? Over the centuries we've most likely come to associate the word more with "Hooray", "Bravo", or even "Hallelujah"! But the true meaning of the word is a plea for salvation.
The Hebrew root words are found in Psalm 118:25, which says, "Save us, we pray, O LORD!" (ESV). The Hebrew words yasha ("deliver, save") and anna ("beg, beseech") combine to form the word that, in English, is "hosanna." Literally, hosanna means "I beg you to save!" or "please deliver us!"
So, as Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem, the crowds were perfectly right to shout "Hosanna!" They were acknowledging Jesus as their Messiah, as shown in their address "Son of David." Theirs was a cry for salvation and a recognition that Jesus is able to save.
As we sing Hosanna this Sunday, let us remember the true meaning of the word and give thanks to Jesus for our salvation.
Blessings,
Steve <><

Who Is This Man?
|
Jesus' impact on our world is highly unlikely, widely inescapable, largely unknown, and decidedly double-edged. It is unlikely in light of the severe limitations of his earthly life; it is inescapable because of the range of impact; it is unknown because history doesn't connect dots; and it is doubled-edged because his followers have wreaked so much havoc, often in his name.
He is history's most familiar figure, yet he is the man no one knows. His impact on the world is immense and non-accidental. From the Dark Ages to Post-Modernity he is the Man who won't go away.
And yet . . .you can miss him in historical lists for many reasons, maybe the most obvious being the way he lived his life. He did not loudly and demonstrably defend his movement in the spirit of a rising political or military leader. He did not lay out a case that history would judge his brand of belief superior in all future books.
His life and teaching simply drew people to follow him. He made history by starting in a humble place, in a spirit of love and acceptance, and allowing each person space to respond.
His vision of life continues to haunt and challenge humanity. His influence has swept over history bringing inspiration to what has happened in art, science, government, medicine, and education; he has taught humans about dignity, compassion, forgiveness, and hope.

The Day I Met Jesus
|
So many of us suffer from an intense spiritual inferiority complex. We are insecure about God's love for us. We don't understand our true worth in his eyes. We struggle with guilt over mistakes we've made. We are ashamed of our own lack of devotion or fervor. We want Jesus to light the flame of love in our hearts, to feel as we did when we first received his salvation.
On the other hand, following Jesus has become stale and familiar to countless Christians today. The flame of first love has waned and our zeal for the Lord has cooled. We need to be inspired and challenged to utterly abandon our lives to Jesus anew.
With a deep sense of awe and a fierce intimacy, this unique book explores five women in the Gospels whose encounters with Jesus revolutionized their lives. Through their imagined diaries, readers get a glimpse of the inner thoughts of the Samaritan woman, the woman caught in adultery, the prostitute, the woman with an issue of blood, and Mary of Bethany. Readers meet these women in their most desperate moments and feel the captivating love and forgiveness of their Savior, revealing how Jesus intersects their lives.

Polls reveal that 90 percent of people pray. Yet prayer, which should be the most nourishing and uplifting time of the believer's day, can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery.
Writing as a fellow pilgrim, Yancey probes such questions as: - Is God listening?
- Why should God care about me?
- If God knows everything, what's the point of prayer?
- Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent?
- Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away?
- How can I make prayer more satisfying?
Yancey tackles the tough questions and in the process comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic. "I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty," he says, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.
| Philip Yancey talks about his book PRAYER |
Best-selling author and ministry leader Thom S. Rainer drew an exceptional response when he posted a 500-word declaration about church membership to his daily blog. "I Am a Church Member" started a conversation about the attitudes and responsibilities of church members -- rather than the functional and theological issues -- that previous new member primers all but ignored. Thoughtfully expanded to book form, I Am a Church Member begins to remedy the outbreak of inactive or barely committed church members, addressing without apology what is expected of those who join a body of believers. When a person's attitude is consistently biblical and healthy, matters of giving, serving, and so forth will fall into place more naturally. Six intentional chapters with study questions guide this rising discussion:
- I Will Be a Unifying Church Member
- I Will Not Let the Church Be About My Preferences and Desires
- I Will Pray for My Church Leaders
- I Will Lead My Family to Be Healthy Church Members
- I Will Be a Functioning Member
- I Will Treasure Church Membership as a Gift

No one wants to see a church die. And yet, far too many churches are dying. For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Thom Rainer has helped churches grow, reverse the trends of decline, and has autopsied those that have died. From this experience, he has discovered twelve consistent themes among those churches that have died. Yet, it's not gloom and doom because from those twelve themes, lessons on how to keep your church alive have emerged. Whether your church is vibrant or dying, whether you are a pastor or a church member, "Autopsy of a Deceased Church" will walk you through the radical paths necessary to keep your church alive to the glory of God and advancement of Christ's Kingdom

Some Parting Fun...
|
Children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Christian school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. Someone had written a note and placed it next to the apples. It read, "Take only one, God is watching." Moving through the line, to the other end of the table, was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. One little boy wrote his own note and snuck it next to the cookies, "Take all you want, God is watching the apples."
