Dear ,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 1 Peter 1:4
With St. Patrick's day is just around the corner I wonder if, at some time or another, you've ever heard the saying: "The luck of the Irish!"
My mother's family was a union of the McClarnons (my grandfather) and Athertons (my grandmother) so there's more than a fair amount o' Irish blood coursing through my veins. While I'm never seen any pots of gold at the end of a rainbow, nor had a sense that I'm particularly "lucky", I have had an awesome awareness of God's blessing throughout my life. I have to wonder if some of my ancestors first heard about the Gospel through a man named Maewyn Succat (better known as St. Patrick).
Although accounts of Patrick's biography differ in details, there seems to be little disagreement as to his passion to evangelize the people of Ireland because of his love for them and his love for our Lord. God impressed upon him to use the symbol of the Shamrock to help convince the unbelieving Irish population of the Triune God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He would display a Shamrock and ask, "Is it one leaf or three?" The answer would come from his audience, "It is both one leaf and three!". Patrick would answer, "And so it is with God!"
How beautiful are the feet of those who bring the Good News. (Romans 10:15) How fortunate I am for the faithfulness of men throughout history who are not afraid to share the Gospel so that others may come to a saving faith in our God by belief in His Son, Jesus, enabled through the relentless pursuit and conviction of the Holy Spirit. If the "luck of the Irish" includes Patrick's call to share the fathomless love of God, then I am more than just 'lucky', I am indeed loved and blessed.
"The Breastplate," attributed to St. Patrick:
"Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger."
Blessings,
Steve <><

The Case for Faith
|
Was God telling the truth when he said, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart"?
In his #1 bestseller The Case for Christ, Lee Strobel examined the claims of Christ, reaching the hard-won verdict that Jesus is God's unique son. In The Case for Faith, Strobel turns his skills to the most persistent emotional objections to belief-the eight "heart barriers" to faith.
This Gold Medallion-winning book is for those who may be feeling attracted to Jesus but who are faced with difficult questions standing squarely in their path. For Christians, it will deepen their convictions and give them fresh confidence in discussing Christianity
with even their most skeptical friends.
Everyone-seekers, doubters, fervent believers-benefits when Lee Strobel hits the road in search of answers, as he does again in The Case for Faith. In the course of his probing interviews, some of the toughest intellectual obstacles to faith fall away.

Polls reveal that 90 percent of people pray. Yet prayer, which should be the most nourishing and uplifting time of the believer's day, can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery.
Writing as a fellow pilgrim, Yancey probes such questions as: - Is God listening?
- Why should God care about me?
- If God knows everything, what's the point of prayer?
- Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent?
- Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away?
- How can I make prayer more satisfying?
Yancey tackles the tough questions and in the process comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic. "I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty," he says, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.
| Philip Yancey talks about his book PRAYER |
Best-selling author and ministry leader Thom S. Rainer drew an exceptional response when he posted a 500-word declaration about church membership to his daily blog. "I Am a Church Member" started a conversation about the attitudes and responsibilities of church members -- rather than the functional and theological issues -- that previous new member primers all but ignored. Thoughtfully expanded to book form, I Am a Church Member begins to remedy the outbreak of inactive or barely committed church members, addressing without apology what is expected of those who join a body of believers. When a person's attitude is consistently biblical and healthy, matters of giving, serving, and so forth will fall into place more naturally. Six intentional chapters with study questions guide this rising discussion:
- I Will Be a Unifying Church Member
- I Will Not Let the Church Be About My Preferences and Desires
- I Will Pray for My Church Leaders
- I Will Lead My Family to Be Healthy Church Members
- I Will Be a Functioning Member
- I Will Treasure Church Membership as a Gift

No one wants to see a church die. And yet, far too many churches are dying. For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Thom Rainer has helped churches grow, reverse the trends of decline, and has autopsied those that have died. From this experience, he has discovered twelve consistent themes among those churches that have died. Yet, it's not gloom and doom because from those twelve themes, lessons on how to keep your church alive have emerged. Whether your church is vibrant or dying, whether you are a pastor or a church member, "Autopsy of a Deceased Church" will walk you through the radical paths necessary to keep your church alive to the glory of God and advancement of Christ's Kingdom

Why do people wear shamrocks on St. Patrick's Day? (Real rocks are too heavy!)
Why can't you iron a four-leaf clover? (Because you shouldn't press your luck!)
What type of bow cannot be tied? (A rain-bow!)
Where can you always find gold? (In the dictionary!)
Why do frogs like St. Patrick's Day? (Because they're already wearing green!)
Why did the elephant wear green sneakers? (Her red ones were in the wash!)
