Dear ,

"All the leaves are brown, and the sky is gray, I've been for a walk on a winter's day" California Dreaming - The Mamas and The Pappas

The song goes on to express a desire to be in the warmth of Los Angeles; and those opening lines sure remind me of the way things look around here this time of year.   Do you find yourself dreaming for the sunshine and warmth of a southern region? It's easy to start daydreaming as the cold winds blow, the skies remain overcast and everything outdoors appears to be dead.

We can sometimes experience a winter season in our spiritual walk as well, where the skies are gray and the leaves of our faith turn brown.   It can seem as if we are walking on a forlorn pathway, cold and dreary, with little hope for the warmth we seek. Yet, if we can just remember the promises God gives, we can soon be in the glow and warmth of His love. Not always a simple thing to do, but an essential exercise if we are to continuously experience His warm embrace.

Another line in the song; "Stopped into a church I passed along the way; well I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray." This reminds me that we need to be authentic in our worship if we expect to stay in the warmth of His will. In order to keep our hearts near the fire we need to approach His throne with sincerity, humility, and reverence.  We can't pretend our way into a close relationship because He knows our attitude, our character, our actions, and our hearts. Don't pretend to pray, or to be a pretend Christian, and then wonder why the way is dark and the sky is drear.

I've found that even when things are pressing in all around, and the way seems impossible, that if I earnestly, sincerely seek Him, He is never far away.   I don't have to dream; He is with me providing His abundant warmth in a cold world.

"I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint." Jeremiah 31:25 (NIV)

A Glorious Dark
A Glorious Dark
In Store or On Line
On Thursday as they ate the Passover meal with Jesus, the disciples believed that the kingdom was coming and they were on the front end of a revolution. Then came the tragedy of Friday and, somehow even worse, the silence of Saturday. They ran. They doubted. They despaired. Yet, within the grave, God's power was still flowing like a mighty river beneath the ice of winter. And then there was Sunday morning.

Real, raw, and achingly honest, "A Glorious Dark" meets readers in the ambiguity, doubt, and uncertainty we feel when our beliefs about the world don't match up to reality. Tackling tough questions like "Why is faith so hard? Why do I doubt? Why does God allow me to suffer?" and "Is God really with me in the midst of my pain?"

A. J. Swoboda puts into sharp focus a faith that is greater than our personal comfort or fulfilment. He invites readers to develop a faith that embraces the tension between what we believe and what we experience, showing that the very tension we seek to eliminate is where God meets us.

Prayer

In Store Special

$5.00

Polls reveal that 90 percent of people pray. Yet prayer, which should be the most nourishing and uplifting time of the believer's day, can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery.

Writing as a fellow pilgrim, Yancey probes such questions as:

  • Is God listening?
  • Why should God care about me?
  • If God knows everything, what's the point of prayer?
  • Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent?
  • Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away?
  • How can I make prayer more satisfying?

Yancey tackles the tough questions and in the process comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic.

"I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty," he says, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.

I Am a Church Member

Best-selling author and ministry leader Thom S. Rainer drew an exceptional response when he posted a 500-word declaration about church membership to his daily blog. "I Am a Church Member" started a conversation about the attitudes and responsibilities of church members -- rather than the functional and theological issues -- that previous new member primers all but ignored.

Thoughtfully expanded to book form, I Am a Church Member begins to remedy the outbreak of inactive or barely committed church members, addressing without apology what is expected of those who join a body of believers. When a person's attitude is consistently biblical and healthy, matters of giving, serving, and so forth will fall into place more naturally.

Six intentional chapters with study questions guide this rising discussion:

  • I Will Be a Unifying Church Member
  • I Will Not Let the Church Be About My Preferences and Desires
  • I Will Pray for My Church Leaders
  • I Will Lead My Family to Be Healthy Church Members
  • I Will Be a Functioning Member
  • I Will Treasure Church Membership as a Gift

Yet, it's not gloom and doom because from those twelve themes, lessons on how to keep your church alive have emerged.
