Dear ,
Tuesday, Jan. 6, was the day this year that Christians observed the visit of the Wise Men to the Baby Jesus, as told in Matthew 2:1-12. The day, and the completion of the 12 days of Christmas, begins a new season in the church year called Epiphany.
The word epiphany comes from a Greek word which means to "reveal." The emphasis is that when the Wise Men visited the baby Jesus he was revealed as not just the Savior of the Jews, but as the Savior of the World. The season of Epiphany continues up until Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent which takes place on February 18 this year. During this season we focus on who Jesus reveals himself to be.
Jesus once asked his disciples, "Who do the crowds say I am?"
After giving their answers that "Some say John the Baptist, other say Elijah; and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life." Jesus followed up with this question,
"But what about you?, Who do YOU say I am?" (emphasis mine)
Peter, in a moment of revelation, an epiphany of God's absolute truth to his heart, declared, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
Christ asks each of us the same questions today. Some in the world will say that He was a good man, a teacher; others will say that He was nothing special, and still others may say that He was just a trouble maker. No matter what others may say, the question really comes down to the next one; "Who do YOU say I am?"
Think about the question during this time of Epiphany. Look for the revealed Christ in your life. Allow God to fill your heart with the realization that Jesus is the Son of God, our Messiah; Saviour.

The ONE Jesus Loves

The felt need of most Christians is the desire to grow closer in relationship with God.
In "The One Jesus Loves," Bob Crosby shows readers how to deepen their personal relationship with God by considering Jesus' "circles of intimacy"--especially those who walked closest to him.
All of us want to feel connected, a part of the circles in which we run. We don't want to feel like the odd man out. Jesus had an inner circle. As a matter of fact, he had several circles of relationships around him. While many filled the outermost rings of spectator and acquaintance, only a few followed all the way to the most intimate places.
Jesus was constantly and winsomely working to bring people closer to himself, calling them out of the far reaches and toward the inner circles. This was his passion. In an age that is desperate for God, how do we press in to become like the two disciples who asked if they could sit right next to Jesus, at his right and at his left?
Can we join God's inner circle? How can we make sure that we are on the closer path?

City of God

On Ash Wednesday, 2012, Sara Miles left church and took to the streets, carrying ashes to bus stops, bakeries, beauty shops, fast-food joints, street corners and sidewalks, marking the foreheads of strangers in the ancient ritual, and offering blessing to waitresses and drunks, believers and doubters alike.
CITY OF GOD narrates the events of this single day in vivid detail, exploring the profound spiritual implications of touching the forehead of a stranger, and illuminating the search for God and meaning that takes place every day, in every kind of neighborhood.
Beginning with a trip to the emergency room of a public hospital, and ending the same night with an unexpected message left by a little girl, she describes the events and encounters with humor and insight. In each chapter she also casts forward and backward over the last two decades, examining her own experiences, reflecting on theology, and weaving together the moving stories of strangers and neighbors who were looking for community and discovered God.
CITY OF GOD is a beautifully-written personal narrative, rich in complex, real-life characters, and full of the "wild, funny, joyful, raucous, reverent" stories of struggle and faith that have made Sara Miles one of the most compelling Christian writers of our time.

Some Parting Fun...

The Reverend Douglas Johnston was not the best of drivers.
One Sunday he was driving home from church when unfortunately, he had a minor bump with a cyclist. The poor man was knocked off his bike into the ditch. The pastor naturally stopped his car, got out and profusely apologized then gave the cyclist his calling card saying that if he could ever be of help, then the man should not hesitate to ask.
As the man rode home he looked at the card which said, 'The Reverend Douglas Johnston is sorry he missed you today.'
