Dear ,

I enjoy listening to Children's Moments at church. We have several volunteers who always communicate the gospel in ways that both children and adults can easily understand. Since we are so close to Halloween, and the kids are all looking forward to pumpkins, candy and masks, the lesson this past Sunday was on costumes.

As Charlie demonstrated her butterfly cape, her Cat in the Hat disguise, and finally her lab coat costume, the kids, and adults, were all having a great time laughing along with her.   But then she brought the point home that we all need to think about. Does a costume actually turn us into the character that the costume represents?

Does wearing a set of butterfly wings mean that I can jump off a roof and fly?   If I have a Cat in the Hat costume on does it mean that I will automatically rhyme everything I say just like Dr. Seuss? Or, If I wear this lab coat and look all smart and confident does it mean that I can perform surgery?, by the way, does anyone want a vaccination?

Well, no. And, unlike putting on a costume to "make believe", we must be careful that we are not just slipping on a Christian costume, pretending to be something on the outside that on the inside just isn't true. In other words, we need to be genuine in our Christian walk.

I've heard it put this way.   Being a regular church attender doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing inside your garage makes you a car, or going to the fast food restaurant turns you into a hamburger. What makes you a Christian is your confession, and repentance, of sin and the acceptance of Jesus Christ as your personal Savior; it's that simple. What comes next is living out that faith through your Christian walk, representing Christ through your life, through the decisions you make, the words that you use, and the things you do.

Does your Monday morning spirituality match your Sunday morning profession? How about on Friday night? Are you filled with the Spirit of the Living God, clothed in His righteousness, or, do you continue to put on the costumes of this world in order to "fit in" or to satisfy human desire?   While it's true that our salvation doesn't depend upon our works, it is also true that our works will reflect our salvation.   Think about the "costume" you wear on a daily basis. Does it accurately reflect who you are and "whose" you are?

Dear Father, help us to put aside the things of this world and to clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Blessings,

Steve <><

Be Real
Be Real
In Store or On Line

We live in a world of fakers. Rather than being real with each other, we present a carefully crafted persona that hides our faults and magnifies our good qualities. But inside we long to be loved, warts and all. We long to stop hiding from each other--and especially from God.

With candor and clarity, pastor Rick Bezet calls readers to a life built on authenticity, showing that the way to true freedom lies through reclaiming our hearts, reviving our souls, and renewing our minds in light of what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.

Through biblical stories and (often funny) personal examples, Bezet encourages readers to live with passion, integrity, and perseverance. He releases readers from the spiritual death that comes with pretending and leads them into a new life characterized by transparency rather than fear.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH
All In
In Store Price - $5.00

The Gospel costs nothing. You can't earn it or buy it. It can only be received as a free gift compliments of God's grace. It doesn't cost anything, but it demands everything. It demands that we go "all in," a term that simply means placing all that you have into God's hands. Pushing it all in. And that's where we get stuck---spiritual no man's land. We're afraid that if we go all in that we might miss out on what this life has to offer. It's not true.

The only thing you'll miss out on is everything God has to offer. And the good news is this: if you don't hold out

on God, God won't hold out on you.

Are you a follower of Jesus?

Don't answer too quickly. In fact, you may want to read this book before you answer at all. Consider it a "Define the Relationship" conversation to determine exactly where you stand.

You may indeed be a passionate, fully devoted follower of Jesus or you may be just a fan who admires Jesus but isn't ready to let him cramp your style. Then again, maybe you're not into Jesus, period. In any case, don't take the question---Are you a follower of Jesus?---lightly.

Some people don't know what they've said yes to and other people don't realize what they've said no to, says Pastor Kyle Idleman. But Jesus is ready to clearly define the relationship he wants with his followers.

Not a Fan calls you to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple. With frankness sprinkled with humor, Idleman invites you to live the way Jesus lived, love the way he loved, pray the way he prayed, and never give up living for the One who gave his all for you.

When a woman decided to send the old family Bible to her brother in another state, the postal worker asked her if there was anything breakable in the package.

"Only the Ten Commandments," she replied.
