Dear ,

"The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching" (1 Timothy 5:17).

Ministry Appreciation Month is a special time set aside each year to honor pastors, pastoral families and ministry leaders for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings they provide. While typically observed in October, it is also important to remember that appreciation, affirmation and prayer support of our spiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the entire year.

Pastors and their families live under incredible pressures. Their lives are on exhibition with the entire congregation and community watching their every move. They are expected to have ideal families, to be perfect people, to always be available, to never be down and to have all the answers we need. Those are unrealistic expectations to place on anyone, yet most of us are disappointed when our pastor fails to meet them. The job of a pastor is a tough one and can often be lonely, frustrating, discouraging and exhausting.

The good news is that we can make a difference! Clergy Appreciation Month is one way we can counter the negative erosion in the lives of our spiritual leaders with the positive affirmation they need and deserve.

A few years ago the following "Eight Ways to Encourage Your Pastor" were published in Today's Christian and are worth practicing every day of the year.

  1. Cut the criticism. This doesn't need amplification.

  2. Pray regularly. Ask for God's best blessings upon the minister

  3. Express appreciation in writing.

  4. Use your skills to bless. Are you a dentist, barber, computer technician, handyman, etc.,

  5. Squelch gossip. This is the sin of choice in too many congregations. Confront it on behalf of your pastor.

  6. Offer to meet a need. This may be an obvious need, or you may have to ask.

  7. Be openly responsive. Respond to effective preaching and pastoral leadership by ministering to others.

  8. Throw away the measuring stick. Every minister is different; stop comparing yours with his predecessor. Besides, most ministers could recall members who measure up better than you or me. Let's don't go there!

Ask your pastor what you can do to make the load just a little lighter. Give your ministry team some extraordinary love and appreciation in tangible ways, not only in the month of October, but throughout the year as well.

"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" Romans 10:15b (ESV)

Blessings,

Steve

"Let's go, shall we? Just the two of us?

"I consider Galloway the country's best kept secret: a place where time holds its breath, where ancient ruins dot the countryside in moss-covered splendor, where the natives are friendly and tourists are few, only because they don't know what they're missing.

"So, ten days in bonny Scotland. You'll join me, aye?
-from My Heart's in the Lowlands

Best-selling novelist Liz Curtis Higgs invites you to take an entertaining journey through the South West of Scotland, known as Dumfries and Galloway. Without crossing the pond, changing time zones, or driving on the left side of the road, you'll explore quaint villages and crumbling castles, old bookshops and charming tearooms in the delightful company of a guide whose love for this quiet nook of Scotland illuminates every page.

The verdant hills and glens of the Lowlands are awash in history, rich with culture, and peopled with engaging characters. The setting for Higgs's acclaimed series of historical novels, Dumfries and Galloway also serves as her home away from home. Her decade-long love affair with this unique area of the world, combined with her award-winning storytelling skills, makes her the ideal armchair travel companion.

Warm, personal, and deeply evocative, My Heart's in the Lowlands transports you to an unforgettable corner of Scotland that will lay claim to your heart forever.

BOOKS OF THE MONTH
All In
In Store Price - $5.00

The Gospel costs nothing. You can't earn it or buy it. It can only be received as a free gift compliments of God's grace. It doesn't cost anything, but it demands everything. It demands that we go "all in," a term that simply means placing all that you have into God's hands. Pushing it all in. And that's where we get stuck---spiritual no man's land. We're afraid that if we go all in that we might miss out on what this life has to offer. It's not true.

The only thing you'll miss out on is everything God has to offer. And the good news is this: if you don't hold out

on God, God won't hold out on you.

Not a Fan
In Store Special! - $5.00

Are you a follower of Jesus?

Don't answer too quickly. In fact, you may want to read this book before you answer at all. Consider it a "Define the Relationship" conversation to determine exactly where you stand.

You may indeed be a passionate, fully devoted follower of Jesus or you may be just a fan who admires Jesus but isn't ready to let him cramp your style. Then again, maybe you're not into Jesus, period. In any case, don't take the question---Are you a follower of Jesus?---lightly.

Some people don't know what they've said yes to and other people don't realize what they've said no to, says Pastor Kyle Idleman. But Jesus is ready to clearly define the relationship he wants with his followers.

Not a Fan calls you to consider the demands and rewards of being a true disciple. With frankness sprinkled with humor, Idleman invites you to live the way Jesus lived, love the way he loved, pray the way he prayed, and never give up living for the One who gave his all for you.

    Some Parting Fun...

Struggling to make ends meet on their meager salary, the pastor was livid when he confronted his wife with the receipt for a $250 dress she had bought. "How could you do this?!"

"I was outside the store looking at the dress in the window, and then I found myself trying it on," she explained. "It was like Satan was whispering in my ear, "You look fabulous in that dress. Buy it!"

"Well," the pastor replied, "You know how I deal with that kind of temptation. I say, 'Get thee behind me, Satan!"

"I did," replied his wife, "but then he said, 'it looks fabulous from back here, too!'
