L'Shanah Tova - Happy New Year!
Perhaps you've noticed on your calendar that next Wednesday is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. I'm sure that Jesus would have celebrated Rosh Hashanah with his fellow Hebrews by attending synagogue and worshipping God .
Rosh Hashanah, literally meaning "Head of the Year" in Hebrew, is one of the holiest days of the Jewish year. One of the main symbols of this holiday is a shofar; a ram's horn blown like a trumpet. This day is to be a memorial proclaimed with 100 blasts of trumpets. While it is not clear what exactly is to be remembered, there are many things associated with the sounding of trumpets throughout scripture.
-
There was a loud trumpet blast when God descended on Mt. Sinai after bringing the Israelites out of Egypt.
-
The trumpet was used to signal the people of Israel when to break camp in the desert, and when to gather before the tent of meeting.
-
The trumpet was used to call the people of Israel to war.
-
The trumpet was blown at the start of the Jubilee year.
-
The trumpet was blown during the coronation ceremonies of the king.
-
The trumpet was blown to warn of danger approaching the cities.
The blowing of the trumpet on Rosh Hashanah is a call to repentance, it is a reminder of the power, holiness and righteousness of God, and of our own sinfulness. While we don't celebrate Rosh Hashanah as Christians, it can still be a time for us to examine our lives. Over the past year have we remained faithful to our salvation? Have we yielded to the Spirit's directions in our relationships, vocations, leisure and service to others? Are we living our lives in a way that reflects God's Grace, and brings honor and glory to Christ?
Spend some time this week lifting those in prayer who do not recognize that Jesus is the Messiah and that His Light will illuminate their hearts. Pray as well that Christ will continue to work in your life so that you will be an effective Christian witness to all you encounter.
Shalom,
Steve

Meet the people who are Logos
|
Meet Shelby Chamberlin,
Although Shelby has only been working with Logos for a short amount of time she is already proving to be a valued addition to the staff . Her warm smile and friendly, compassionate spirit quickly endear her to our customers as she greets and helps each with a genuine servant's heart.
Marie and I were excited when Shelby expressed a desire to work with us during her senior year in high school. We've know her for a few years through church and have been inspired and encouraged by her Christian witness. Shelby is a true leader among her peers and her love of Jesus shines through in everything she does. She has a genuine Christian witness and lives in a way that brings honor and glory to His name. It is no wonder that one of her favorite quotes is that of Francis of Assisi, "Preach the Gospel, and if necessary, use words."
When not hard at work with studies or at Logos, Shelby enjoys dance, making things with her hands, and pursing her passion for teaching. She has been involved in dance for a number of years and has blessed many through interpretive dance performances set to Christian music. She plans on becoming an elementary teacher and enjoys working with kids, especially those with energy and attitudes that challenge her. It's cool the way that God puts a desire in the heart then brings a person to a vocation that excites and fulfills when He is allowed to lead.
Shelby is very active at church, representing the youth of the church at both the local and conference levels. She just recently finished a term as the president of the Kentucky United Methodist Youth and remains very active on several conference lay committees. Shelby's contribution in any endeavor is always made from a humble heart and sincere desire to follow God's Will.
Some of Shelby's favorite authors are Francis Chan (Crazy Love) and Jefferson Bethke (Jesus Religion:). She's also just finished reading "Bad Girls of the Bible" by Liz Curtis Higgs. When it comes to music, Rend Collective Experiment is a favorite choice. Rend Collective Experiment focuses on an authentic experience with God that performs music more like a family and less like a band separated from its audience. Worship emanating from a joy filled heart changed through the power of Christ is Rend's testimony and Shelby relates to their message.
Shelby's verse is: "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes:" As a customer recently shared a personal story and love for Christ with Shelby, she realized that working at Logos was much more than a job. She found that it is more like serving friends, helping them find the things they need to deepen their faith and grow in their walk with Christ.
When you stop by Logos of an evening, or on Saturday, you may be blessed with Shelby's smile and great service. You'll be blessed, as will she, as you meet and share in Christian love.

Heroes, Rogues, and the Rest
|
 | In Store or On Line |
The Bible is filled with heroes and rogues, from the first followers of Christ to the dissenters and critics set on uprooting the Christian faith. Some are well known. Others are not. But all have a place in the eternal story of the Bible.
What can we learn "about" these characters? And what can we learn "from" them? In 12 chapters, popular author J. Ellsworth Kalas offers a close examination of biblical characters from both the Old and New Testaments.
From Adam and Eve to Elijah, from Martha and several Marys to Jesus Christ himself, each of these people have defining characteristics that together create the Biblical narrative. Their stories display strength, courage, and perseverance characteristics that shaped the lives of the early believers and continue to influence Christians today.
As readers reacquaint themselves with each character, they will rediscover the excitement and relevance of the Bible and find new ways to apply biblical teaching to specific circumstances in their lives.

Do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you." These and other seemingly simple lessons were hard-won for a hardheaded young man who was more "wise guy" than "wise" early in life.
Now, internationally known psychologist and "New York Times" bestselling author Dr. Kevin Leman shares the biblical wisdom that has shaped him into the successful, joy-filled person he is today. With his trademark wit and humorous stories from his personal life, Dr. Leman shows readers how to jump-start or revitalize their lives both spiritually and practically with words from one of the wisest men of all time. (Hint: It's not him.) Dr. Leman offers hope, courage, and a fresh perspective on living a great life, all in a compact, readable package.
This lively and inspiring book makes the perfect gift for professionals, graduates, and anyone who could benefit from simple truths for living well. |

Boundaries - BOOK OF THE MONTH
|
 | In Store Price - $5.00 |
Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not.
Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances -- Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions -- Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others -- Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator --
Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask:
- Can I set limits and still be a loving person?
- What are legitimate boundaries?
- What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries?
- How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?
- Aren't boundaries selfish?
- Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries?
Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend offer biblically-based answers to these and other tough questions, showing us how to set healthy boundaries with our parents, spouses, children, friends, co-workers, and even ourselves.

Some Parting Fun...
|
Ben listened closely to the Sunday School lesson.
'May I ask a question?' Ben asked.
Of course, go ahead, ask your question,' replied the teacher.
'Well, the Bible says that the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea,' continued Ben, 'also that the children of Israel built the temple, the children of Israel did this and the children of Israel did that. Didn't the grown-ups ever do anything?'
