Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)
Oh be careful little mouth what you say,
Oh be careful little mouth what you say,
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little mouth what you say.
One of the best children's sermons ever has to be one that cautions the kids to be careful about what they say. It usually starts with the old quote, " sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me", and ends with an object lesson that teaches us that our words, once spoken, are out there forever. One of the best illustrations is that of squeezing toothpaste out of the tube; once it's out there's no putting it back. While it is fun to watch the kids ponder how it could be done we know that the paste will never go back into the tube; and so it is with what we say.
The Bible gives plenty of direction regarding uplifting speech and the power of spoken words. It also warns us of the destructive power or our words, and counsels us repeatedly to keep our tongues in check. I'm sure that we have all experienced consequences of spoken words, good and bad, in our lives. Kind words, expressed with love from a friend during a time of sorrow, or of joy celebrating a happy time, builds the spirit and leaves the refreshing scent of God's presence. Harsh words, on the other hand, can cut us like a knife. Unkind, cynical, sarcastic words leave an acrid stench that can linger for days or even years, often causing harm to our health, emotions or spirituality.
While it may be impossible for me to completely control my tongue; it is not impossible for God to do so if I have Christ living in me. That is if I let Him. Sadly, all too often I forget whose I am and take control again, giving opportunity to that evil within to spew out garbage through the use of my mouth. Not good. Once it is out there, there is no putting it back in. I find that it is a daily thing - I need to continuously pray that Christ will control my tongue, that He will protect me from taking control. I need to remain grounded in God's Word; remaining faithful to study and apply his Will in my life.
How about it? Are you being careful what you say? Are you allowing God to fill your being with His grace, His will, His love, His direction, or does it seem that you are always busy trying to put the paste back in the tube?
Here is a website with 100 scripture references on the power of the spoken word. Check it out; hide the truth of the Scripture in your heart, and seek God's help to tame the beast that is the tongue.

The Difference You Make
|
 | In Store or On Line |
Every one of us has influence, whether we realize it or not. In everything we say and do, we are influencing those around us. What if we became more aware, more intentional, and more strategic about our own influence? Well, we might just change the world.
True influence, says Pat Williams, isn't about getting what you want--it's about serving others. Using personal stories from his own life and the lives of others, Williams shows readers the difference between influence and manipulation, how to influence others through both words and deeds, and ultimately how to change the world for the better, one relationship at a time.
This book will inspire readers to build a positive legacy in the lives of others and take the role of influencer to heart. Each chapter includes questions and ideas for personal reflection and practical application, and can be used to guide group discussions as well. Includes a foreword by Joe Girardi, manager of the New York Yankees.

Meet the people who are Logos
|
Meet Kathleen Diesman,
Kathleen has been serving at Logos for almost an entire year! Being thrown into a retail environment during the holiday season isn't usually a desired thing, but Kathleen jumped right in embracing the challenge with a great attitude. Her warm smile and enthusiastic, energetic personality always brighten the day for everyone, employees and customers alike, as they work or shop at Logos.
One of Kathleen's favorite quotes is "Carpe Diem" usually translated as Seize, or Enjoy the Day, so it is understandable that she is so energetic and willing to jump in and get a job done. When not hard at work at Logos, Kathleen enjoys crafting and will have a table at her Church's (Mentor Baptist Church) annual craft fair. In addition to crafting, Kathleen has undertaken a Matthew 25 Ministries project where she collects used Rx bottles then delivers them to the ministry. The bottles are used in impoverished areas of the world where medications are often dispensed into hands, pockets, leaves, or any other available containers. Another labor of love she participates in is the Backpack Program where several churches in the area collect and provide weekend meals for children in need at a local school.
Whenever you hear Toby Mac singing over the PA system at Logos you'll most likely find Kathleen jamming along with the music as Toby is one of her favorite musicians. While she enjoys contemporary music it might be interesting to note that one of her best loved Christian books is a classic by Emmet Fox entitled "Sermon on the Mount". When she first read it over 30 years ago, the style and content spoke to her heart and helped her to understand the teachings of Jesus. Another favorite book is a more recent addition to Christian literature; "The Shack" by Paul Young, which she found to be a moving and beautiful expression of a person finding his friend and Savior in Jesus Christ.
Kathleen understands that the path is narrow and that we depend upon Christ to lead us. Her life's verse is found in Psalm 119:105, "Your Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path". She knows that in order to find the Will of God you need to be grounded in His Word, and when you are the light of His Grace will be enough for the day's journey. Through it all she strives to be a person who walks in and reflects His light, bringing honor and glory to His name.
Next time you are in, make sure to look up Kathleen, and if you can, bring in a bag of empty Pill bottles to help support her ministry.

Boundaries - BOOK OF THE MONTH
|
 | In Store Price - $5.00 |
Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not.
Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances -- Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions -- Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others -- Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator --
Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask:
- Can I set limits and still be a loving person?
- What are legitimate boundaries?
- What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries?
- How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?
- Aren't boundaries selfish?
- Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries?
Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend offer biblically-based answers to these and other tough questions, showing us how to set healthy boundaries with our parents, spouses, children, friends, co-workers, and even ourselves.
