Dear ,

"Even if good people fall seven times, they will get back up. But when trouble strikes the wicked, that's the end of them." Proverbs 24:16 (CEV)

Everyone fails.

Have you ever worked really hard at some project only to have it fail? Have you tried to influence a situation for the good only to have it turn out not so well?   How about your spiritual life, have you done your best to live in righteousness, only to slip with a misspoken word, angry spirit, impure thought or deed, or worse?

If we are honest with ourselves, we can say yes to any, and probably all of the above. Everyone fails from time to time. It may not be every day, or even very often, but at some point failure is inevitable. And while failure of a project, or failure to influence an event can be heart breaking, failure in our spiritual life can also result in shame and guilt. When we fail spiritually, it is important to remember that it is not failure that defeats us, it is our response to our failure that sets us right or keeps us in bondage.

For me, it is very encouraging that God included the stories of so many who had spiritual failures in the Bible. There are many examples but Abraham, Moses, David, and Peter come quickly to mind. They all failed miserably at times but in each of their stories we find that God forgives and redeems. It is not the failure, but the response to failure that makes all the difference.

He has promised that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) While I would prefer never to fall, and do my best to keep upright, there are those times when the sinful spirit within surfaces. Even the Apostle Paul struggled with the sinful spirit within; in Romans 7:15-20 he laments about his failure to live righteously, and in doing so gives me hope for my struggle.   While it doesn't pardon the sin, it does help me to know that even heroes of the faith had to deal with failure.

I'm reminded of a Bob Carlisle song from several years ago entitled, "We Fall Down". In the song, a seeker basically asks a monastery priest what is different about a life lived in seclusion from worldly influence and the priest answers; "we fall down, we get up, and the saints are just the sinners who fall down....and get up." It serves as a great reminder that when we fall, and we will no matter how well we try to do what is right, that God is ready and willing to restore us to His fellowship if we just confess our failure and seek His forgiveness.

Blessings,

Steve

God is NOT Mad at You
God is not Mad at You

When Joyce Meyer posted "God's not mad at you" on Facebook a few months ago, she didn't realize that those five words would trigger thousands of posts of gratitude and relief. She had obviously hit a hot button. Her latest book addresses the fears of those who know God loves them but still fear his anger.

"Where does this concept of God come from?" she asks in the introduction. "Perhaps from an angry parent who was difficult to please. Or the pain of rejection from parents or friends who didn't know how to give unconditional love. Perhaps it came from the church. From religious teaching that offered us rules and regulations to follow and implied that we'd be unacceptable to God if we didn't follow them."

It's a paradox that isn't often discussed by Christian teachers: God loved the world so much that He gave His son to rescue mankind. Yet we tend to think of Him as a stern judge who is ready to punish us at the slightest misstep.

In God Is Not Mad At You, Joyce examines the sources of this mixed message and untangles the confusion that most Christians experience. Joyce's latest book addresses a huge felt need that isn't often discussed within the Christian community: the need to see God as the loving parent that He is, not a petty tyrant who is ready to pounce at the first opportunity. It will disabuse readers of one of the greatest misconceptions within the church and free them to experience His love on an entirely new level.

Meet the people who are Logos
Janet

Meet Janet Hogg

Janet is a more recent arrival to Logos, but still time flies by and we find that before you know it, come December, she will be celebrating her second anniversary with us. Janet was looking for an opportunity to serve others in a meaningful way when she came to Logos, and she serves very cheerfully as she greets each guest to the store with a warm smile and welcome.

As a pastor's wife, and preacher's kid, Janet brings a unique perspective to the store. She embraces the ministry aspect of our business with an empathy and compassion learned from life's experiences. She understands the challenges facing those involved in ministry and is many times found just "listening" as someone shares the things of life that are weighing them down.

One of Janet's favorite passages of scripture is Psalm 138 where she finds strength in God's all loving-kindness and faithfulness, knowing that God will work out the plans that He has for her life, for His loving-kindness endures forever! Anyone who's had the pleasure of working with Janet knows that God's promise is being fulfilled in her life as she gives of her time with a humble heart and sincere interest in others. She has a love for Christ that shines through her service, reflecting His love to all.

Favorite activities when not working at Logos are gardening, reading, songwriting and drawing.   She's just finished reading "Unstoppable" by Christine Caine and recommends it as an uplifting, inspiring and challenging book. She also has one very major activity/responsibility at church which no one else could undertake - she takes care of the preacher! It's a big job but someone has to do it and Janet is very good at it.   Of course, since she's married to him the job pretty much came along with the marriage vows.

Having lived her life surrounded by those in the pulpit, it is understandable that Janet has heard many a wise saying. From all the quotes she's been blessed to hear, one that really makes her smile is a quote from her Granddaddy Cain; "People are funnier than anybody!" Janet is quick to laugh when our efforts come up less than expected and knows first-hand that if you want to make God laugh, just tell Him your plans.   It's apparent that she's inherited some of her granddaddy's wit and humor as she often blesses those at the store with a good laugh as we work together.

Next time you visit Logos, make sure to meet Janet. You'll be glad that you did; and so will she!

The One Jesus Loves
The One Jesus Loves

In "The One Jesus Loves," Bob Crosby shows readers how to deepen their personal relationship with God by considering Jesus' "circles of intimacy"--especially those who walked closest to him.

All of us want to feel connected, a part of the circles in which we run. We don't want to feel like the odd man out. Jesus had an inner circle. As a matter of fact, he had several circles of relationships around him. While many filled the outermost rings of spectator and acquaintance, only a few followed all the way to the most intimate places.

Jesus was constantly and winsomely working to bring people closer to himself, calling them out of the far reaches and toward the inner circles. This was his passion. In an age that is desperate for God, how do we press in to become like the two disciples who asked if they could sit right next to Jesus, at his right and at his left?

Can we join God's inner circle? How can we make sure that we are on the closer path?

Boundaries - BOOK OF THE MONTH
Boundaries
In Store Price - $5.00

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not.

Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances -- Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions -- Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others -- Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator --

Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask:

- Can I set limits and still be a loving person?

- What are legitimate boundaries?

- What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries?

- How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?

- Aren't boundaries selfish?

- Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries?

Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend offer biblically-based answers to these and other tough questions, showing us how to set healthy boundaries with our parents, spouses, children, friends, co-workers, and even ourselves.

Some Parting Fun...

The old time pastor was galloping down the road, rushing to get to church on time. Suddenly his horse stumbled and pitched him to the ground. In the dirt with a broken leg, the pastor called out, "All you saints in Heaven, help me get up on my horse!"

Then, with superhuman effort, he leaped onto the horse's back and fell off the other side.

Once again on the ground, he called to Heaven, "All right, just half of you this time!"
