Dear ,

But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:14 (ESV)

Everyone knows that the "dog days of summer" occur during the hottest and muggiest part of the season. Webster defines "dog days" as...

1 : the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere

2 : a period of stagnation or inactivity

I grew up in central Indiana where the late summer heat and humidity were over bearing. No breeze, nothing but steamy corn fields in all directions and no air conditioning in the house.   I can remember at times thinking there would never be an end to the oppressive heat and longed for relief.   Things got real slow this time of year as no one had any desire to do anything.

Just like the dog days of summer, we sometimes enter into a time of stagnation or inactivity in our spiritual lives that causes us to experience an oppressive presence in our spirits.   We become weary and burdened down with the never ending responsibilities of life, or we neglect the important things while struggling to just keep up with every-day expectations. It can get to the point that we wonder if there will ever be an end to the oppression, and wish that we could find rest and relief.

While it is impossible to do anything about the weather, and we will just have to endure the dog days for a few more weeks, we can turn to Jesus for relief when we experience oppressiveness within our spirit. Ask Jesus to stir you within and bring refreshment to your spirit.   Praise is a good way to break out of a stagnant spiritual walk. Read the scripture out loud, sing hymns and worship, letting your soul give thanks to God.   Doing for others is also a great way to renew your spirit; volunteer at church, make dinner and deliver it to someone recovering from an illness, send cards of encouragement to a friend in need, look for any way you can, and help others.

We may have to put up with dog days of summer, but thank God we have relief that is just a prayer away when we find ourselves needing spiritual refreshment.

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'" John 7:38 (ESV)

Blessings,

Steve

Move beyond Coping and Surviving to a Rejuvenating Place of Soul Rest

How many of us find ourselves exhausted, running on empty with no time for rest, no time for ourselves, no time for God? Bonnie Gray knows exactly what that's like. On the brink of fulfilling a lifelong dream, Bonnie's plans suddenly went off script. Her life shattered into a debilitating journey through anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia. But as she struggled to make sense of it all, she made an important discovery: we all need "spiritual whitespace."

Spiritual whitespace makes room--room in one's heart for a deep relationship with God, room in one's life for rest, room in one's soul for rejuvenation. With soul-stirring vulnerability and heartbreaking honesty, Bonnie takes readers on a personal journey to feed their souls and uncover the deeper story of rest. Lyrical writing draws readers into Gray's intimate journey through overwhelming stress to find God in a broken story and celebrate the beauty of faith.

Guided by biblical encouragement and thought-provoking prompts, Gray shows readers how to create space in the everyday for God, refreshment, and faith. She also offers practical steps and insights for making spiritual whitespace a reality, right in the midst of the stress-frayed stories in every season of life.

"We live in a culture that brags and boasts about being busy. Into that reality steps Bonnie with a new idea. Whitespace is an important concept and Bonnie has captured it perfectly. If you're exhausted with being exhausted, read this book. If you feel too busy to read this book, then that's probably the best sign of all that you need it."--from the foreword by Jon Acuff, "New York Times" bestselling author of "Stuff Christians Like"

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

--Acts 20:24 (ESV)

Growing old has been the greatest surprise of my life," says Billy Graham, known by many as God's Ambassador. "I would have never guessed what God had in store for me, and I know that as I am nearing home, He will not forsake me the last mile of the way."

In "Nearing Home" this man of faith--now in his nineties--explores the challenges of aging while gleaning foundational truths from Scripture. Billy Graham invites us to journey with him as he considers the golden years while anticipating the hope of being reunited with his wife, Ruth, in his heavenly home that eclipses this world. "When granted many years of life, growing old in age is natural, but growing old with grace is a choice," says the author. "Growing older with grace is possible for all who will set their hearts and minds on the Giver of grace, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Join Billy Graham as he shares the challenges of fading strength but still standing strong in his commitment to finishing life well.

"Explore with me not only the realities of life as we grow older but also the hope and fulfillment and even joy that can be ours once we learn to look at these years from God's point of view and discover His strength to sustain us every day."   --BILLY GRAHAM

Man's Best Hero

From Lassie to Old Yeller to Rin Tin Tin to Marley, dogs have stolen our attention and our hearts. In real life, our own pets are more than just canine companions; they are members of our family. And for some, they are heroes and brave servants.

In "Man's Best Hero," prolific author (and lifelong dog lover) Ace Collins provides a collection of short, dramatic stories about dogs that have gone the extra mile. Though not trained to perform heroic acts, circumstances and the remarkable bond between the dog and its owner led these animals to perform amazing feats that defy logic. Whether it is saving a drowning man, jumping in front of a truck to push a toddler to the curb, or tearing the burning clothes off a child s back, the actions presented in these stories display courage, loyalty, intelligence, and other admirable qualities of life and faith.

These compelling portraits, told first in the words of the dog and then through exciting narrative that recounts the dog's actions, will touch reader's hearts and will leave them with a greater appreciation for their furry friends.

Some Parting Fun...

You know it's hot when:

  • You see a bird using a potholder to pull a worm out of the ground.
  • Farmers are feeding crushed ice to their chickens so they won't lay boiled eggs.
  • Electric bills for A/C are more than the house payment.
  • You've canceled your Hotmail account because you didn't like the name
  • You refer only to a Celsius thermometer to enjoy summer temperatures that rarely exceed 35 degrees.
  • Corn on the stalks starts popping and flying through the air.
  • Popsicles melt completely within 20 seconds of removing them from a container of dry ice.
