My 4 year old grandson and I have been experiencing Vacation Bible School together this week.
Yes, the experience is mainly for him but as I've worked through the curriculum with him I am experiencing Jesus in ways unexpected. As talented leaders tell the familiar stories about the gift from God, the healing of Jarius's daughter, the woman at the well, Zacchaeus, and the crowds seeking after Jesus I have been moved and renewed in my spirit. The scriptures are well-known, and ones that I've studied many times over the years, but watching and listening as they are presented in ways that little eyes and ears can relate with somehow makes them new again. Seeing the preschoolers respond to the sharing of the gospel, way above the level that I was expecting, has also brought a great deal of hope that God definitely moves in the hearts of children.
I have to be honest as well. It was with more than a little hesitation that I decided to participate in VBS. I was torn between the Holy Spirit's urging to bring my beloved little guy to the event and my fear of being able to control his behavior. Getting plugged into a group with about 13 other preschoolers didn't help - its chaos! What I am learning through the experience though is that even with the never ending motion and nonstop chatter God has a plan, and His plan is much better than mine could ever be. He's working in the lives of everyone who is attending; some hearing about His love for the first time, others being reminded again that His love knows no ends. Everyone growing in some way or another as Jesus is exalted.
Watching my grandson learn and respond makes me wonder if perhaps God watches me in much the same way. Does He wonder if I'm getting it? Does he long for me to have that epiphanal moment when I'll once again embrace the light of His Amazing Grace? Do my nonstop chatterings and never ending attempts to control everything cause him to cringe? Does He smile and long for me to know that He loves me, all of me, even when I'm not at my best, even if I mess things up? It's good that His love and patience are perfect and I am so thankful that He never gives up on me.
Have you considered participating in a VBS by teaching, helping or bringing a child? Spend some time in prayer about it and see if God would use you to make a difference in a child's life. I'm sure glad that he kept urging me to do so; it's been a great experience.
Blessings,
Steve
PS...if you're looking for a fun, well at least interesting and entertaining, time Friday evening drop in for our VBS closing. 7:00 PM, 7/18, Asbury UMC - Heighland Heights, KY

Four Lists
of
Spiritual Gifts
This free e-Chart, "Four Lists of Spiritual Gifts" is taken from the pamphlet Spiritual Gifts
The Spiritual Gifts booklet explains each of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and what they mean. When you became a Christian, the Holy Spirit gave you spiritual gifts to build up fellow believers, both in your own church and worldwide. This pamphlet defines spiritual gifts, and describes the differences between the biblical gifts. The Spiritual Gifts Test helps you identify your spiritual gifts, and explains how to use your gifts to benefit others.
Each gift of the Spirit is vital and none is more important than others. No matter what your giftedness is, you play an important role in strengthening the church.
Did You Know? 63% of Christians Don't Know Their Spiritual Gifts
A recent Barna study showed that nearly two-thirds of Christians don't know their spiritual gift(s), don't think they have a gift at all, or claim to have a gift that is not actually biblical.
Most Christians know something about Spiritual Gifts, but many don't realize how important they are. Believers are given Spiritual Gifts to contribute to the growth of the church. Spiritual Gifts are important because Scripture says that the church needs all of the gifts working together to help build the Body of Christ. Every believer counts! This pamphlet includes a Spiritual Gifts Questionnaire to determine which gift(s) you might have.
The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to Christians to help build the life and ministry of the Church. Yet, a large number of Christians do not use or even recognize their spiritual gift. Rose Publishing's Spiritual Gifts pamphlet will help you learn how important Spiritual Gifts are and how to develop the gift(s) the Holy Spirit has given you.
Topics in the Spiritual Gifts pamphlet include -
- A self-test "Spiritual Gifts Questionnaire" to determine which gift or gifts you may have.
- Description of each gift and how to develop it more as you minister to other believers.
Use for
- Individual study
- Discipleship
- Small Group or Sunday School class

Some Parting Fun...
|
One Sunday morning, a young child was "acting up" during the worship service. The parents did their best to maintain some sense of order in the pew but were losing the battle. Finally, the father picked the little fellow up and walked sternly up the aisle on his way out.
Just before reaching the safety of the foyer, the little one called loudly to the congregation,
"Pray for me! Pray for me!"
