How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? Romans 10:14 (NASB)
Have you heard a good sermon lately? I suppose that's not as easy a question to answer as it first appears. Before we can answer the question we need to determine just what it is that makes a sermon good. A song recently released by Greater Vision, "Preacher, tell me like it is", caused me to start wondering if I had been considering sermons "good" for the right reason.
Many today would say that a sermon is good if it is finished in time to make it out the door in time so as to avoid the lunch surge at the local restaurants. Others might say that the sermon is good if it leaves them with a positive attitude. Still others may count the sermon good if it is given in the classic style; introduce three points, explain the three points, summarize the three points and conclude, following the outline exactly. Some would attribute a good sermon to one that had great illustrations, made them laugh, or at the very least didn't make them "feel" bad, and gave them a warm fuzzy as they departed. Are these the type of things that really make a sermon good?
While it is nice for the message to be delivered in a way that is engaging and to the point, we should look for the spiritual content, and life application of the sermon, more than the presentation. Does the message speak to my heart? Does it shine light into a dark area of my life that has remained closed to Christ? Does it bring conviction upon me to respond to the pleading of the Holy Spirit? Is it the Word of God brought alive in a way that I may never have heard before? Does it inspire me to live my life in a way that reflects the love of God to all I meet? Does it draw me closer to Christ than I was before? When the sermon is over do I find myself longing to hear, and learn, more rather than racing to leave the service?
So, have you heard a good sermon lately? I've come to the conclusion that the quality of the sermon depends more upon my preparation to receive it, than it does on the pastor's ability to package it in a way that is appealing or convenient for me. I need to let my pastor have the freedom to preach rather than being boxed in with time constraints, or with my notion of what makes a sermon "good".
Blessings,
