And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38
The disciples were gathered together that morning as Jewish faithful from all corners of the known world gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Shavu'ot, or Pentecost. Shavu'ot is the observance remembering the giving of the Torah, 50 days after the Exodus from Egypt.
Do you wonder how the mood would have been in that room full of early Christians that day? Was it solemn or joyous? Did they fear for their safety, hiding in a room away from the crowds or were they simply gathered to worship together? Was there an excitement between them, anticipating the promise Jesus had given them that one would follow him to give them power? Whatever their state of mind on that morning, the giving of the Holy Spirit would forever change their lives. In fact, it would change the life of every believer to follow, including yours and mine.
I'm sure that in the time between Christ's resurrection and this day of Pentecost, (50 days) early Christians had been telling others the amazing truth of the Gospel of Jesus. I'm positive that they were sincere in their efforts and even though things may have been done timidly at times, the Light they shared was authentic and they were faithful. I doubt their testimony ever strayed from the facts, even when they were challenged; Jesus rose from the grave and any who accept Him as their Lord and Savior would receive forgiveness and become joint heirs, children of the Living God! But on Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given so that believers would be empowered to boldly share the Gospel in a way not possible of doing on their own. The Holy Spirit works to shine Light into the darkness of the soul of an unbeliever, and to bring conviction upon the listener as a child of God shares the truth.
So many times we Christians become discouraged as we share the Gospel with what seems to be deaf ears. We forget that it is not in our strength that others will come to Christ, but through the power of the Holy Spirit working within and through us. You know the old saying that "You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". It's like that with our witness, we can bring the Gospel to the world but we can't make the world believe. It's up to the Holy Spirit to bring an unbeliever to the point of understanding, acceptance, confession and faith. All we can do is faithfully tell the story, the story of the redemptive power of the Risen Christ, living our lives in witness to His wonderful Grace. Trust the Holy Spirit to complete the work; He is able and will do all within His power to bring those we've entrusted to Him to the saving Grace of Jesus.
Just like those first Christians on the day of Pentecost, our faithful proclamation of the Good News of Jesus will be blessed by the power of the Holy Spirit in ways we could never imagine. Don't be discouraged; trust Him to complete the work as only He is capable of doing.
Blessings

WARNING: This is not just another book on evangelism. It s a simple idea of evangelism through friendship first, and the opportunities to share your faith that follow.
It will bring friendships you already have to a new level, and create opportunities for new, authentic friendships with those you will eventually meet.
OUT: Evangelism as sales pitch, as conquest, as warfare, as ultimatum, as threat, as proof, as argument, as entertainment, as show, as monologue, as something you have to do.
IN: Disciple-making as conversation, as friendship, as influence, as invitation, as companionship, as challenge, as opportunity, as conversation, as dance, as something you get to do.
You're more ready for this than you realize, and so are your friends!

Some Parting Fun...
|
During a Sunday morning worship service a man began to be moved by the Holy Spirit.
Out loud he said "Amen!"
People around him were a little disturbed.
Then louder he said, "Hallelujah!" A few more people were becoming visibly upset.
Louder still he shouted "Praise Jesus!"
An usher finally moved quickly down the aisle. He bent over and whispered to the man, "Sir! Control yourself!"
The man exclaimed, "I can't help it. I got religion!!!"
To which the usher responded, "Well you didn't get it here!"
