Dear ,

Share in suffering like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving in the army gets entangled in everyday affairs; the soldier's aim is to please the enlisting officer.  2 Timothy 2:3-4 (NRSV)

This Saturday is Armed Forces Day.

Since the founding of our nation we have depended upon men and women in uniformed service to our country to maintain freedom and the American way of life.  So many have given of themselves so that all of us can enjoy "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Without the Armed Services we would be at the mercy of any who would want harm to come to our democracy.

Each branch of the Armed Services provides specialized service but all serve under the flag of the United States of America.  While each may be different, there are common traits inherent to the individuals serving under the banners of the  Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard.

In each and every service those who take the oath of protecting our great nation also submit to the authority of the Commander-in-Chief and the chain of command; it is mandatory that they follow orders without hesitation or question.   Each person in service is also required to know the manual inside and out, and is tested on their knowledge of the contents, as well as their ability to satisfactorily perform all actions to be an effective member of the team.  Finally, all who serve are required to know how to suit up for battle; they must understand the components of their armor and how to properly wear it for maximum protection against harm.

As I think about those serving each branch of our Armed Services I wonder if, as Christians in the Lord's Service, we see that those same common traits apply to our enlistment.

  • Do we submit to God's, our "Commander-in-Chief's", authority and give Him our immediate obedience without question or hesitation?
  • Do we read our manual, The Bible, and know it well enough to live according to it's principles and direction?  Have we studied it to learn how to be more like Christ?

  • Do we understand that we must suit up with the Armor of God in order to stand up to the spiritual battle we face each and every day?  Do we even know what makes up our battle gear or how to use it against our enemy?

It takes great sacrifice from those serving to keep this country safe.  Please give thanks to God for all the brave men and women who selflessly undertake the great responsibility of defending our liberties and freedom, protecting our nation.  This Armed Services day fly the American flag to show your support, thank someone currently serving, or a veteran, for their service, and pray for the safety and success of all who give so that we may be free.

As you give thanks for our Armed Services, also consider the great responsibility we have as Christians to discipline ourselves so that we may be effective Christian soldiers in our service to Christ.

Blessings

The Inspiring Story of a World War II Hero's Miraculous Survival at Sea

July 30, 1945--The USS "Indianapolis" and its 1,196-man crew is making its way toward a small island in the South Pacific. The ship is sailing unescorted, assured by headquarters the waters are safe. It is midnight, and Marine Edgar Harrell and several others have sacked out on deck rather than spend the night in their hot and muggy quarters below. Fresh off a top-secret mission to deliver uranium for the atomic bombs that would ultimately end World War II, they are unaware their ship is being watched. Minutes later, six torpedoes are slicing toward the "Indy" . . .

For five horrifying days and nights after their ship went down, Harrell and his shipmates had to fend for themselves in the open seas. Plagued by dehydration, exposure, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks, their numbers were cruelly depleted before they were miraculously rescued. This is one man's story of courage, ingenuity, and faith in God's providence in the midst of the worst naval disaster in U.S. history.

The Church exists today in its current form because of the people who have come before us. Who were those people? Staid and dour scholars? Cultural movers and shakers? How does their contribution to history affect us today?

From a consummate storyteller comes this collection of inspiring biographical sketches of people who played pivotal roles in advancing the Kingdom of God on earth. In rich prose and spanning twenty centuries of church history, these engaging narratives range from the well-known to the obscure, highlighting personalities such as Josephus, Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, Galileo, John Calvin, Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, William Wilberforce, G. K. Chesterton, and many others.

Readers will feel the past come alive and mingle in their minds with the present state of the Church, encouraging and galvanizing them to live their own faith courageously in our time--and shape the Church of the future.

Deployment into active duty and re-entrance into civilian life can be challenging transitions for military families.

Retired B-2 stealth bomber pilot Lt. Colonel Tony Monetti and Penny Monetti offer words of encouragement through personal stories, a sense of humor, and biblical truths. In Honored to Serve, readers can find tools to help them deal with transition issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), financial hardships, wounded relationships, and more.

Written from the perspectives of both a military service person and a spouse, this insightful book not only offers encouragement to military families, but also includes suggestions on how others can provide support through church and community programs.

Pontius Pilate

This free e-Chart, Pontius Pilate, is a fantastic summary of the historical figure that encountered Jesus

This e-Chart is taken from the Rose Atlas of Then and Now Bible Maps with Biblical Backgrounds and Culture by Paul H. Wright, president of Jerusalem University College (Institiute of Holy Land Studies)

This is a Bible Atlas with something extra!  Clear plastic overlays of modern cities and countries so you know where Bible places are today.

Shows how geography was important in the stories of Abraham, Moses, David, and many other biblical characters.

For example:
Know how David's clever understanding of geography and politics led to his marriage with Ahinoam of Jezreel.

Discover why Naomi, in the Book of Ruth, couldn't just move back to Bethlehem after her husband's death and use his land again.

Find out why Moses and the Children of Israel took the long southern trek from Egypt to the Promised Land, rather than the direct route.

This atlas gives you incredible insights into your favorite Bible stories. See the Table of Contents at the bottom.

Some Parting Fun...

As they stood in formation at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, our Flight Instructor said, "All right! All you dummies fall out."

As the rest of the squad wandered away, one airman remained at attention.

The instructor walked over until he was eye-to-eye with the recruit, and then just raised a single eyebrow.

The young man smiled and said, "Sure was a lot of dummies, huh sir?"
