Dear ,

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Is the Bible the living breathing word of God, or, is it simply a book of teachings, containing stories and advice, authored by men?

A recent study conducted by the Barna Group, in association with the American Bible Society, finds that even though one in five Americans report to read the Bible weekly, only about 20% of them believe the Bible to be relevant and authoritative. This means that 80% of those reading the Bible consider it to be something other than God's design for humanity; the way to eternal salvation and a blueprint for righteous living. The percentage of those under 40 who doubt the divinity of the Bible is even higher.

Another interesting statistic produced by the survey is that over 80% of the population considers American values and morals to be in decline. Not surprising, but when asked to identify the reason for the decline, people are more likely to point to movies, music, and TV rather than to a lack of Bible reading, with half of all respondents indicating that the Bible has little influence on society.

I find the results of the survey to be discouraging, and can easily see the connection between the lack of traditional Christian, Biblical belief, and our cultural decline in values and morals. It shouldn't come as a shock though, as God tells us that "...the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed." - John 3:19-20  When lives are sieved through the standards prescribed by the God of the Universe, it is easy to see why so many would rationalize away their understanding of the divinity of the Bible. They don't want to face the fact that none are worthy less they are washed in the blood of the Lamb.

What say you? Do you believe that the Bible is truly the Living Word of God applicable to your life; leading, guiding, developing you as a child of God, or is it simply some good advice written down by some well-meaning people long ago?

Take our poll - Is the Bible the Living, Breathing, Inspired Word of God?

Blessings

Introduction to the Bible
Concise Introduction to the Bible

Preeminent among all literature about the big questions of life is the Holy Bible. Not only does it report human opinions, but it also gives divine insights into all the issues of life. Thus, it gives perspectives and answers available nowhere else. Viewed from this standpoint, the Bible is not some book out of the musty past that has only antiquarian interests for a few with a nostalgic bent; but it has vital, contemporary relevance.

Dr. Vos brings the Bible to life, not only as he recounts the events of biblical history, but as he makes it relevant for the readers of the twenty-first century. What is the Old Testament? What is the New Testament? How can a reader make sense of them? What does inspiration mean? How does the Bible all fit together?

The Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook is designed with an awareness of the obstacles people have to understanding the Bible. It begins with an essay on "How to Read and Study the Bible" before proceeding to chapters that provide a thorough overview of each of the Bible's 66 books, summarizing each one's content, author, evidences of authenticity, and historical context.

In addition to the full-color maps, photographs, reconstructions, and charts that equip readers throughout the volume, a smartphone-accessible QR code is included for each chapter that leads to related online teaching from noted Bible scholar Gene Getz. There's also an article by Jeremy Howard (general editor of the award-winning HCSB Study Bible) explaining how each book of the Old and New Testaments was accepted into the Bible.

The Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook is specifically designed to overcome obstacles when reading the bible. It begins with an essay on "How to Read and Study the Bible" that orients readers to what they will encounter in the Bible's pages, and this is followed by a helpful introduction/outline to each of the Bible's 66 books. The purpose of these introductions is to help the reader see a unified theme throughout the Bible and to guide their reading. Studies indicate that reading comprehension is a key factor in understanding, and in addition to its introductory materials The Handbook provides these materials for each biblical book:

* Identifies Key Texts

Some Parting Fun...

The Sunday School teacher was telling his class the story of the Prodigal Son. Wishing to emphasize the resentful attitude of the elder brother, he laid stress on this part of the parable.

After describing the rejoicing of the household over the return of the wayward son, the teacher spoke of one who, in the midst of the festivities, failed to share in the jubilant spirit of the occasion. "Can anybody in the class," he asked, "tell me who this was?"

Nine year old Olivia had been listening intently to the story. She waved her hand enthusiastically in the air. "I know!", "I know!", she said beamingly. "It was the fatted calf."
