The SOAP Method of Study
SOAP is short for Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer and is a simple way to approach your personal devotion time with God.
Here's what you need:
-
Bible. Be sure to get a Bible translation you can understand. AStudy Bible is a great start. It contains footnotes, definitions, a concordance, and other tools to help you understand the Scriptures.
-
Journal. This is your Spiritual DVR. It helps you capture and record all of the good stuff God wants to speak into your life.
-
Pen. Obviously, so you can write stuff down.
-
Scratch Pad. This is to write down all those little annoying things that creep in while you're trying to focus on God's voice. Make a "To Do" list of things for later.
Here's what you do: Very simply, carve out a quiet time each day. During this time, go through your daily reading this way:
1. S for Scripture
Take time reading and allow God to speak to you. Highlight, underline or place a mark in the margin of your bible next to the scriptures that stand out. When you are done, reread the verses you marked, look for one that particularly spoke to you that day, and write it in your journal.
2. O for Observation
What do you think God is saying to you in this scripture? Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and reveal Jesus to you. Paraphrase and write this scripture down in your own words in your journal.
3. A for Application
Personalize what you have read by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write how this scripture can apply to you today.
4. P for Prayer
This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation, so be sure to listen to what God has to say!
My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD!
-Psalm 104:34

Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook
|
 | In Store or On Line |
The Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook is designed with an awareness of the obstacles people have to understanding the Bible. It begins with an essay on "How to Read and Study the Bible" before proceeding to chapters that provide a thorough overview of each of the Bible's 66 books, summarizing each one's content, author, evidences of authenticity, and historical context.
In addition to the full-color maps, photographs, reconstructions, and charts that equip readers throughout the volume, a smartphone-accessible QR code is included for each chapter that leads to related online teaching from noted Bible scholar Gene Getz. There's also an article by Jeremy Howard (general editor of the award-winning HCSB Study Bible) explaining how each book of the Old and New Testaments was accepted into the Bible.
The Holman Illustrated Bible Handbook is specifically designed to overcome obstacles when reading the bible. It begins with an essay on "How to Read and Study the Bible" that orients readers to what they will encounter in the Bible's pages, and this is followed by a helpful introduction/outline to each of the Bible's 66 books. The purpose of these introductions is to help the reader see a unified theme throughout the Bible and to guide their reading. Studies indicate that reading comprehension is a key factor in understanding, and in addition to its introductory materials The Handbook provides these materials for each biblical book:
* Identifies Key Texts * Key Terms * One sentence summaries of each book * Author and Date of each book * First audience * Occasion * Genre * Summary of each book's message * How the book fits into God's redemptive story * How each book affects the Christian understanding of God, Humanity, salvation, and more! * Principles to live by

Pastor John, an avid golfer, was once taking part in a local tournament. As he was preparing to tee off, the organizer of the tournament approached him and pointed to the dark, threatening storm clouds which were gathering.
"Preacher," the organizer said, "I trust you'll see to it that the weather won't turn bad on us."
The pastor shook his head. "Sorry," he replied. "I'm sales, not management!
