When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)
Many of my friends at church are currently engaged in a devotional study by Max Lucado entitled "You'll Get Through This". The study looks at the life of Joseph, who, even after suffering at the hands of his brothers, being accused of immorality, and spending time in prison stayed true to his faith. Through it all he knew that God was the one in charge of his life and by trusting in Him, things would be okay.
Sermons the past few weeks have also centered on the study, and a couple of weeks ago the verse from Isaiah was used in the teaching. As soon as I heard the verse it reminded me of a song that we used to sing in our church back home that included variations of the scripture in the chorus. Like many songs of faith, this one was born through sorrow.
George Young, a carpenter and little know preacher in the late 1800's spent his life humbly serving the Lord in small communities. Financial support was often lacking, and it was hard on George's family. Through all the ups and downs he and his wife faithfully served and after a long struggle saved enough to move into their own small home; one which George had built himself. When the family was away on a preaching assignment, some local thugs, who didn't care for the Gospel George preached, set fire to the house and it was totally lost. It was out of the loss of their home that George wrote the words to this song.
"In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet, God leads His dear children along; where the water's cool flow bathes the weary one's feet, God leads His dear children along. Some through the waters, some through the flood, some through the fire, but all through the Blood. Some through great sorrow but God gives a song, in the night season and all the night long."
Some of the things we go through are not always pleasant, nor are they always what we would choose to do, but through it all we must keep the faith that God is in control and has our best interest in mind. While we don't always see the shady green pastures when going through the floods and fires of life we can rest assured that God does give a song; in the night season, and all the day long.
"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV)
Blessings
