"City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style, In the air there's the feeling of Christmas...."
This song always makes me think of the trips into Indianapolis as a child to see the Circle, and department store windows, all decorated with scenes of Christmas. It was a joy to walk around in the cold, hearing "Merry Christmas" from strangers, as everyone enjoyed the season.
Today it seems that the Christmas season starts before Halloween and is far different from how it was just a few short years ago. Decorations lose their uniqueness after being on display for several months instead of a few weeks. Rather than enjoying the holiday, and extending sincere wishes for a Merry Christmas, people seem to be more focused on meeting unrealistic expectations instead of giving from a loving heart.
I know this isn't how God intended it. The Gift we are supposed to be using as our example for giving, wasn't given out of a sense of obligation. It wasn't shared with expectations of anything in return. It was a genuine gift of love. In 2nd Corinthians we find the parameters for giving; with a cheerful heart, not grudgingly, giving out of thankfulness for what we have and never giving because we feel forced to do so. Giving to bless others rather than to impress others.
Take some time to think about your approach to giving this season. Is it from a grateful heart with thanksgiving for the blessings you've been given, or is it from a begrudging heart filled with disdain for the process? Look for ways to give gifts of service and caring rather than those that are glitzy, financially burdensome, and temporal. Give out of a love for Christ and your giving will bring a "Merry Christmas" to all you encounter.
Blessings
