Dear ,
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:13-16
A couple of weeks ago my son was impressed by a well known quote that his pastor shared during the Sunday sermon.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke
Even though I have heard this quote expressed many times over the years, as he shared it with me, I was reminded that as a Christian I am to be the salt and light of the earth. Without my active Christian witness, evil will take advantage influencing those around me.
Here are some things I've been pondering this week; join me in asking yourself these questions:
- What is God asking of me today? Am I listening? Can I hear His voice? Am I willing to the things He asks me to do?
- Have I lost my saltiness? Do my character, actions, and words season those around me with the love of Jesus?
- Do I conform to the norms of this world to avoid ridicule rather than standing up for Biblical truth and principles?
- Does my lifestyle represent Jesus? Can others see the light of Christ shining in and through me? Am I more concerned about things than about people?
- If I were brought to trial for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict me?
It may often be very difficult to take a stand for what is morally right, especially in a culture where right is somehow twisted into appearing wrong; but if we fail to try, who will? Puritan Francis Bacon once said, "There is no comparison between that which is lost by not succeeding and that which is lost by not trying."
Legend has it that In the fourth century a little monk named Telemachus from Asia (modern day Turkey comprises the Roman province of Asia; or perhaps Asia Minor is meant), was led by an inner voice to go to Rome without knowing why. He followed the crowds to the Coliseum. Two gladiators were fighting, and Telemachus tried to get between them to stop them, shouting three times, "In the name of Christ, forbear!" Telemachus was killed by being run through with the sword of one of the gladiators. When the crowd saw the little monk lying dead in a pool of blood, they fell silent, leaving the stadium, one by one. Because of Telemachus' death, three days later, the Emperor by decree ended the Games.
We may not face the sword in our Christian journey, but if we are to truly be salt and light in this world we must not shy away from the persecution that taking a stand can bring. If we fail to try, darkness and despair will quickly fill the void.Blessings,
Steve

Tens of millions of Christians live in China today, many of them leading double lives or in hiding from a government that relentlessly persecutes them. Bob Fu, whom the Wall Street Journal called "The pastor of China's underground railroad," is fighting to protect his fellow believers from persecution, imprisonment, and even death. God's Double Agent is his fascinating and riveting story.
Bob Fu is indeed God's double agent. By day Fu worked as a full-time lecturer in a communist school; by night he pastored a house church and led an underground Bible school. This can't-put-it-down book chronicles Fu's conversion to Christianity, his arrest and imprisonment for starting an illegal house church, his harrowing escape, and his subsequent rise to prominence in the United States as an advocate for his brethren. God's Double Agent will inspire readers even as it challenges them to boldly proclaim and live out their faith in a world that is at times indifferent, and at other times murderously hostile, to those who spread the gospel

You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten? In" "this six-session small group Bible study, pastor and "New York Times"" "best-selling author, Max Lucado offers refreshing assurance.
Max reminds participants God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed. But his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil.
With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. What Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

Some Parting Fun....
|
The new preacher had just begun his sermon. He was a little nervous, and about ten minutes into the sermon his mind went blank. After a brief second of complete panic, he remembered what they had taught him in seminary about situations like this: repeat the last point. His teacher assured him this would help him remember what was supposed to come next. So he gave it a try.
"Behold, I come quickly," he said. Still his mind was blank.
He tried again. "Behold, I come quickly."
Still nothing. He tried one more time -- "BEHOLD, I COME QUICKLY!", speaking and gesturing with such force that he fell forward, knocking the pulpit to one side, tripping over the flower pot, and falling into the lap of a little old lady in the front row.
The young preacher apologized profusely.
"That's all right, young man," said the little old lady. "It was my fault. I should have gotten out of the way. You told me three times you were coming!"
