Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

"I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!  But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!  Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.  They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

He said to the crowd:

"When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.  And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.  Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time? (Luke 12:49-56 NIV)

These words of Jesus sound harsh and demanding. He is addressing his disciples and others who have been following him, somewhat closely, as he ministered from place to place.

How do you think it would feel being called a hypocrite by Jesus? Not very good. But if we fail to follow completely, to take up the cross and dedicate ourselves to Him wouldn't he say the same to us?

We often try to ignore the elephant in the room in order to keep the peace, but in reality are we less than committed Christ followers when we fail to passionately defend Biblical Truth and Christian principles? We don't bring up Christ in our discussions to keep from being ridiculed. We don't stand for morality or personal accountability in an effort to remain "politically correct". We fail to tell others the "Good News" of Jesus to avoid questions we fear could be difficult to answer. The excuses can go on and on but the bottom line is we are adopting a "live and let live" attitude while many around us are unknowingly slipping away so that we can remain comfortable in our "faith".

Standing up for Jesus with a fire in our hearts will bring division, there is no doubt. Proclaiming the Gospel, speaking up for what is right, shining light on what is wrong and living Christ centered lives may cost us relationships, stature in the workplace, and even family. Failing to do so will cost more, it will hinder others from knowing of God's love for them through Jesus, and it will keep us from an even closer relationship with the one we love and follow.

"Jesus, I want to follow you completely. Forgive me when my heart and choices don't show that. Please re-kindle the fire of passionate discipleship in my heart. Amen.
"

Blessings,
Steve

Are you a follower of Jesus?

Don't answer too quickly. In fact, you may want to read this book before you answer at all. Consider it a 'Define the Relationship' conversation to determine exactly where you stand. You may indeed be a passionate, fully devoted follower of Jesus. Or, you may be just a fan who admires Jesus but isn't ready to let him cramp your style. Then again, maybe you're not into Jesus, period.

In any case, don't take the question---Are you a follower of Jesus?---lightly. Some people don't know what they've said yes to and other people don't realize what they've said no to, says Pastor Kyle Idleman. But Jesus is ready to clearly define the relationship he wants with his followers

What did Jesus really mean when he said, "Follow Me"?

In this book, David Platt, author of the "New York Times" bestselling book, "Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream," contends that multitudes of people around the world culturally think they are Christians yet biblically are not followers of Christ. Scores of men, women, and children have been told that becoming a follower of Jesus simply involves believing certain truths or saying certain words.

As a result, churches today are filled with people who believe they are Christians . . . but aren't. We want to be disciples as long as doing so does not intrude on our lifestyles, our preferences, our comforts, and even our religion.

Revealing a biblical picture of what it means to truly be a Christian, "Follow Me" explores the gravity of what we must forsake in this world, as well as the indescribable joy and deep satisfaction to be found when we live for Christ. The call to follow Jesus is not simply an invitation to pray a prayer; it's a summons to lose your life--and to find new life in him. This book will show you what such life actually looks like.

Some Parting Fun....
A woman approached the minister after the sermon, and thanked him for his discourse. "I found it so helpful," she said.

The minister replied: "I hope it will not prove as helpful as the last sermon you heard me preach."

"Why, what do you mean?" asked the astonished woman.

"Well," said the minister, "that sermon lasted you three months."
