For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

 

In recent weeks I've had several friends relate how they've encountered spiritual forces in their walk with God. The most recent story shared with me happened right here at Logos, where on one occasion our employees sensed an overwhelming spirit of darkness lingering around the counter area. As Marie prayed for help she felt the Holy Spirit saying to wrap her arms around the spirit and usher it to the door.   Once the door was opened and the spirit removed, the atmosphere of the store changed as if from night to day.  Another encounter was relayed to me by a pastor who shared that on Easter Sunday he wrestled with an evil spirit challenging the very message of Easter to the point that he felt waves of doubt and frustration overcoming him. He endured the attack by standing on the promises of God he had committed to his heart.

 

These friends and others have struggled with battles on a plane that is unseen, with an enemy that is invisible yet powerful. The battles have been real and the struggles have left each participant drained, emotionally and physically, as they stood against the foe.  Every day Christians are faced with satanic attacks. Sometimes the attacks are frontal, coming directly at us with a ferocity that is easily identified, more often though the attacks are subtle, nudging us toward evil in ways we may not recognize until it is too late.   In either case, we must be prepared so that we are able to call on the necessary forces to defeat the enemy.

 

Scripture gives us very explicit instructions for doing battle with evil forces. "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." (Ephesians 6:13) We have a list of battle armor, found in Ephesians 6:14-18, that needs to be strapped on each day to equip us against the enemy. Armor that will enable us to withstand frontal assaults, as well as to ward off sneak attacks; without it, we are easy prey. I encourage you today to download the free Bible chart, "Armor of God" found below (avail. through June 3), then use it to get into the practice of preparing each day for battle.  

 

The books I've listed this week, while fictional, describe in very vivid detail the battles we face.   After reading each I was more aware of the war between good and evil that is being waged all around us. Being alert to the enemy and the tactics he may employ is a good way to be able to recognize an attack.
