On Monday, May 27, as we celebrate Memorial Day, it's appropriate to take a moment to say a word of thanks to those who have put their lives on the line to preserve our freedom. I remember as a child that Memorial Day was a sacred day, all businesses were closed, parades were held across the land and solemn services were held commemorating the fallen. I also remember visiting the graves of our departed loved ones, leaving flowers in honor of their lives and in remembrance of our love for them.
Give thanks to those who have given their lives for our country. Pause to think about those who did this in World Wars I and II, in Korea, in Vietnam, in the Gulf War and most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq. Also remember those who have given their lives in other conflicts and stations while serving our country faithfully. We've lost something as a nation when we don't take time to reflect, remember, and give heartfelt thanks for patriots who've made the ultimate sacrifice.
We remember those who gave their lives protecting our freedom. Jesus said, "Greater love has no man than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." Certainly these have set the example in service to our nation. But Jesus Christ has set the ultimate example in giving His life for all mankind.
On Memorial Day, we honor those who gave their lives for our nation. As we remember them, also think about the One who gave His life for our salvation.

Some Parting Fun....

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex was staring up at the large plaque that hung in the foyer of the church. The plaque was covered with names, and small American Flags were mounted on either side of it.
The seven year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the boy, and said quietly, "Good morning Alex".
"Good Morning pastor," replied the young man, still focused on the plaque. "Pastor McGwire, what is this?"
"Well son", said the pastor, "It's a memorial to the men and women who died in the service."
Soberly, they stood together, staring at the large plaque.
Little Alex's voice was barely audible when he asked,
"Which service, the 9:00 or the 11:00?"
