After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Matthew 17:1-2
Shortly after Jesus had rebuked Peter for refusing to believe that Jesus would have to suffer and die, Jesus took three of them to the mountain. While on the mountain, Jesus was transfigured - a fancy word meaning, "supernaturally changed". In Greek, the root word is metamorphoo or as we know it metamorphosis meaning a complete change of appearance. Jesus allowed the three to accompany Him so that they could see first hand what lay beyond the suffering he had warned them was ahead. As Jesus was transformed, Moses and Elijah also appeared and began talking with Him.
Peter, as usual, had a suggestion for Jesus, and was ready to build permanent shelters so they could all stay and worship. But Jesus knew that there was other work to do and before long they were coming down from the mountaintop.
Reading the scripture of the transfiguration this week reminded me of an Acappella song that was popular several years ago (click album cover to hear). The message of the song is the same that Peter had to experience on that Transfiguration day so long ago. While it is great to have the mountaintop experience to have our souls refreshed, it is vital that we come down into the valley again to continue our labor and to share the Good News with those who have not had the mountaintop experience.

Remember, as you go through life, that there will be mountaintop experiences but there are many more valley times to go through. That's just the way it is and always has been. Keep the faith!, Press on toward the finish! Be encouraged that a glorious transfiguration on the mountaintop awaits.
