Dear ,

In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.   Luke 15:10

Several years ago, Marie and I were blessed to vacation in a small Colorado town with a mountain stream running right down the center of it. The banks of the river were very well kept, and an inviting walkway followed along the water.   After church on Sunday, we decided to take a stroll along the stream to enjoy the warm sunshine and beauty of God's creation.

As we neared a foot bridge crossing the river we heard the cheers of a large crowd of people gathered along the banks and on the bridge. When we arrived at the bridge we could see that the excitement was over a baptism service that was being held right out in the middle of the waterway. Each time a new Christian was dipped under, he or she arose from the water with a boisterous welcome reminiscent of rejoicing angels.

This Sunday, the church remembers Christ's baptism. When Jesus stepped into the water, he was known only as the human son of a carpenter. When he came out of the water, he was filled with the Holy Spirit and blessed as God's Beloved Son. Can you hear the Angels rejoicing?

Christ was so much like us, yet He was God. He didn't need to be baptized as a public remission of sin, He was sinless. Yet, through His example and humility, we share in the same Holy Spirit descending upon us and are given the privilege, through Christ, of becoming children of God.

Just as the Father and Holy Spirit came upon Jesus at His baptism, they dwell within us through our relationship with Christ. Because we are Children of God, we are blessed with power, and life, and spirit that will sustain us through all trials.

As Christians, when we celebrate Christ's baptism, let us remember that in all that we do, we are proclaiming to the world that we too have become children of God. We are given that same Holy Spirit, we are claimed by the same Heavenly Father, and rejoiced over by the same Angels of Heaven.

Blessings,

Steve  <><

Believing that Christianity is impossible without the Holy Spirit, Jim Cymbala combines biblical insights about the work of the Spirit with stunning stories of how the Spirit is moving today in order to help readers experience more of his power and his presence.

With stunning stories of how God is working in the lives of people and churches today and biblical teaching about the Holy Spirit,  Cymbala invites you to experience God in a fresh and vital way. Nothing else will change our prayer life, our study of God's word, and our worship more than opening our hearts to the Spirit. If we want power, confidence, joy, peace, and more love in our lives, then we need a better understanding of how and why the Spirit moves so we can join him there.

FASTING

This free e-Chart, Fasting, is taken from the Spiritual Disciplines pamphlet.

God has called us to make disciples and be his disciples (Matt. 28:19). What does it mean to be a disciple? Spiritual Disciplines, a 14-panel, full-color pamphlet, looks at the classical spiritual disciplines that help us follow Jesus: Scripture reading, prayer, fasting, worshiping, and more.

It addresses questions such as:

  • What does it mean to be Jesus' disciples in the twenty-first century?
  • Do spiritual disciplines look different in an electronic age?
  • How can spiritual disciplines be a joy, not a legalistic burden?

Note: You can print it out, share it with friends, reproduce it, laminate it, and use the e-chart for personal or small group use as is - no alterations may be made to the content or repurposed without written consent of Rose Publishing. All materials are copyrighted. Download is available through February 15, 2013.

Some Parting Fun....

One day God was looking down to earth and saw all of the evil that was going on.

He decided to send an angel down to earth to check it out so he called an angel and sent him to earth for a time. When he returned he told God, "yes it is bad on earth, 95% is bad and 5% is good."

God said this was not good. He would send an email to the 5% that were good to encourage them, something to help them keep going.

Do you know what that letter said?

What, you didn't get one either?!
