JOY to the world, the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heav'n and nature sing.
Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns,
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,
Repeat the sounding joy.
Isaac Watts wrote this hymn as a paraphrase of the last five verses of Psalm 98, but it has come to be one of the most loved and sung Christmas carols. The tune for Joy to the World, Antioch, has an even greater relationship to Christmas as it is generally considered to be the derived combination of several melodies contained in Handel's Messiah.
Albert Bailey, author of the Gospel in Hymns, writes, "It is one of the most joyous Christmas hymns in existence; not in the sense of merry-making, but in the deep and solemn realization of what Christ's birth has meant to mankind"
Joy is an essential spiritual practice growing out of faith, grace, gratitude, hope, and love. How appropriate are the carol's words combined with the majestic score to express our heart's overflowing praise for Christ's sacrificial gift. We rejoice that through His birth, death and resurrection we are invited to become joint heirs with Christ through his gift of salvation. He was rich but became poor so that we, though poor, could become rich; all we need do is seek repentance and accept His gift.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.
