THANK YOU OUTGOING BOARD MEMBERS
| |
The Fox Valley United Way is fortunate to be led by a board of directors committed to bringing real, lasting change to the community. We want to express our sincere gratitude to Melinda James and Brian Basilico, outgoing board members who have worked tirelessly for the last six years to ensure that the FVUW is doing all that it can to make a difference.
Melinda completed her 2nd 6-year term on the board, during which she was elected to three separate terms as board chair in addition to serving on a number of committees. She was the recipient of the Rita Anderson Smith Award at our annual breakfast in May for giving of her time and treasure to make the Fox Valley a better place for all.
In 2012, Brian was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the second time, not only for all that he does for the FVUW, but for all the additional effort he puts forth in the community. During his board tenure, he chaired both the Marketing Committee and the Community Events Committee.
We are grateful that Melinda and Brian will continue as committee members as each is an exceptional example of how to Live United. Many thanks to them both!

Super Efforts
Elisabeth Shaffer, campaign coordinator at the Super Target in Yorkville, initiated a number of fun and creative employee fundraising events to benefit the FVUW. Employees could donate to have their boss do their work for an hour ("Boss Swap"), participate in an auction to receive a car wash from their supervisor, or compete in a 3-legged race. Raffles were held to give employees a chance to win a one-day vacation or write their schedule for a week. Sales of baked goods, pasta meals and movie night supplies raised additional dollars. Thanks to Elisabeth and all the employees at the Yorkville Super Target!
Please give us a call if you are looking for fun and creative ways to kick-off your United Way campaign.

ADVOCATE
Anyone can champion the cause. So go ahead and speak out. Engaging in advocacy and public policy with United Way is a powerful way to make a difference in people's lives.
Examples of advocacy include: educating others, sharing stories to show the impact of an issue or contacting your elected official. There are four types of advocacy:
Case advocacy: Intervening to address an individual's or family's problem.
Administrative advocacy: Creating new policies, revising guidelines and resolving program problems through government agencies.
Legislative advocacy: Educating elected officials about policies or programs and informing them of the impact of the program in their home district.
Media advocacy: Increasing public awareness and influencing the public debate through the media.

Special Thanks to:
Our appreciation goes to the Aurora Public Library Foundation for their generous $6,000 contribution in support of the SPARK initiative. A matching funds grant from the Dunham Fund means the gift will provide $12,000 to benefit this crucial early learning program. On behalf of Aurora's children, we thank you! | |
