The frenzy of the holiday season will soon be upon us. For many of us, our biggest worries will be what to wear to the holiday party, how many miles we need to run the next morning to burn off those extra calories and what to buy our family and friends. While those parties, miles and gifts are sure to make us merry, that happiness is usually superficial and short-lived.
To find real joy this holiday season, do something that makes a big difference in the life of one person. That something doesn't need to cost a lot of money or time. Oftentimes, it's something as simple as dusting off that old pair of boots hiding in your closet or basement.
Earlier this year I met one Officer Jim Barrett, an Iraqi War Veteran, Hartford Policeman and an advocate for the city's homeless. Moved by a homeless vet whose only shoes last winter were a pair of disintegrating flip-flops, Officer Barrett bought him a pair of new sneakers, bringing to light a need for decent footwear among Hartford's homeless. While winter coats are often available through local coat drives, decent shoes are not. Yet proper footwear is sorely needed for this population who rely on their feet to find shelter, safety and a hot meal.
To combat this problem, Fleet Feet joined forces with Officer Barrett, the Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association, Abby Moore and the non-profit Community Partners in Action to begin a program called Footwear with Care. The mission of the program is to provide shoes and holistic foot care to the homeless and at-risk population. The program has been a resounding success!
In April, Officer Barrett drove his police cruiser to Fleet Feet so we could stuff it full of gently-used sneakers. Two weeks later, we distributed those shoes along with socks, snacks and foot care items at an event where local podiatrists donated their time to examine and treat the homeless feet. We expected to serve 100 individuals, but ended up helping 263 people in the span of 4 hours. Because of your donations, we were also able to provide sneakers and a pizza party to children living at My Sister's Place. My heart broke and warmed simultaneously.
Our next Foot Clinic is scheduled for December 10. Our goal is to be able to provide everyone in attendance with a pair of boots in order to better protect their feet in the cold and snow. To do that, we're going to need your help once again as we stuff Officer Barrett's cruiser - this time full of snow, work and hiking boots (no dress boots please). Men's boots are most needed.
Our boot drive will begin on November 12 and culminate with a group collection/Stuff-a-Cruiser event on Saturday, November 26. We are looking for Captains to champion mini-drives within your own community (office, school, church) to maximize the success of the drive. We will provide a collection box for you and can arrange pick-up of your boots if you are unable to attend the event on Nov 26. Email me if you are interested.
Help make a difference in our community this holiday season - one boot at a time!

Winter is coming! Don't let the nasty conditions slow you down. - Brooks Adrenaline ASR 13 (men & women)
- Brooks Ghost 9 GTX (men & women)
- Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 33 Shield (men & women)
- Saucony Peregrine Ice+ (men & women)
Add a pair of wool socks from Darn Tough VT or SmartWool and laugh at whatever Mother Nature throws our way this winter!

Nancy's Picks - High-Performance Winter Gear
|
Don't let the cold keep you from your training runs! We believe the difference between getting out and staying in is what you are wearing. You can buy functional, cute tops and bottoms nearly everywhere, but when you want all that plus quality and performance, shop specialty.
We are super excited about our winter apparel this year - innovative fabrics to keep you warm and dry without a lot of bulk, cozy outer layers and tailored styles that provide a great fit. Whether you are running, skiing, sledding, building snowmen or just hanging by the fireplace, we've got the gear for you. Here's a highlight of some of our fabulous brands:
Mizuno: Best known for their Breath Thermo technology that turns your body's moisture (and Mother Nature's) into heat thanks to special woven fibers. Seriously! Ask to see a demo next time you are in the store - it's really cool!
Craft: Headquartered in Sweden and outfitter of choice for the USA Ski Team; they know cold weather performance gear! Craft is best-known for their base layers which feature channel-knitted fabrics that trap air to provide warmth and enhance moisture transport - though their mid-layer half-zips (I love the ones with built in mitts!) and outer wear jackets are incredible too.
SmartWool: This company was born on a rugged Colorado mountain with a single pair of socks. They specialize in apparel made with high-quality Merino wool from New Zealand. Merino works with your body's own heating and cooling system to keep your core temperature where it should be (warm in the winter, cool in the summer). While their apparel is high-performance, it also has a great lifestyle appeal with fabulous jackets and skirts filled with Smartloft "down-like" insulation. You won't want to take them off.
Asics: The big story this year is Lite-Show which has been incorporated into both their apparel and shoes. By day, the various shorts, capris, tights, shirts, jackets and shoes look ordinary, but once the flash of a camera or a car's headlights hit them, they light-up so you can be seen and stay safe. Perfect for those who run or walk (their dogs!) in the dark!
Under Armour: It's no wonder that so many professional athletes "protect their house" with gear from UA. Their ColdGear technology features soft, brushed interiors next to skin and smooth exteriors act like a second-skin to protect you from the elements without weighing you down. The Infrared Jacket also features an interior thermo-conductive pattern that absorbs and retains your body's heat. Toasty!
We also have wonderful tops and bottoms from Saucony, Nike and New Balance that feature retro-reflectivity, water and wind-resistant shells, strategically-placed pockets and cozy tops that will take you from the trail to tailgaiting or the studio to lunch with your friends in style!
...and coming soon, InknBurn's crazy holiday-themed tights and long sleeves!

Winter Half Marathon Training Program
|
Want to train through the winter? Here are 3 secrets to success:
- Don't stop running outside. It's easier to acclimate to running in the heart of winter when you do it consistently through the fall.
- Pick a race. Like the Colchester Half Marathon on February 25.
- Train with a group. Whether they are old buddies or strangers, by the end of the winter, they will be among your favorite friends!
Join our Winter Half Marathon Training Program and your odds of success will increase even more! The 12-week program begins on Saturday, December 10 at 8am and culminates in the Colchester Half Marathon. What are you waiting for? You CAN do this!!

Fall Roasted Veggie Rice Salad
Just because the weather has turned colder, doesn't mean we need to forgo salads. I adjust the ingredients (farewell tomatoes) and the preparation style. Like many salad recipes this serves as a template. Instead of broccoli, use brussel sprouts. Replace the wild rice with farro or bulgur. Butternut squash could replace the delicata squash, however delicate with it's thin skin, doesn't need to be peeled and has a shorter cooking time, making it an ideal choice for this salad.
