Behind every great runner is a coach. Sometimes they are a coach in the most literal sense, creating your training program and developing you into a better runner. Many times they are on the sidelines of a race cheering like crazy as you run past. Always, they are that person who believes in you even when you don't believe in yourself.
I've had many coaches in my life - from my dad who was the spark that ignited my passion for running, to my high school XC coach who tuned my training so I could experience the thrill of victory to my sister who became my coach after I was diagnosed with Lupus and helped me train for - and finish - my first marathon. She was literally with me every step of the way. It's because of her that I became inspired to own a running store so I could help others experience the life changing power of running.
Over the past seven years, it has been an honor to be a part of so many people's running journeys, but even more empowering to see the coached become the coaches. People like Rich Dillon and Amy Frey (pictured above) who once were participants in our training programs, but who have been so affected by running that they devote nearly every week of the year to coaching our No Boundaries Beginner 5k program. Between the two of them, they have easily helped 1,000+ people cross the finish line.
It's also people like Amy Trainor, Randy Collins, Deborah Ross, Rachel Tambling, Kim Marchand and Jeanne Corey who have spent countless weekend mornings helping folks to conquer longer distances like the 10k, half and full marathon. They are the ones who arrive in West Hartford early to set out water stops and are among the last to leave, making sure their peeps all made it safely back to the store...and have been known to offer free massages post-run too! They willingly share their favorite tips to make running more enjoyable (just ask Jeanne to sing you the Ant Song) and as injury and bonk-free as possible.
And it's people like Bill Honeck, former owner of Pig Iron Sports and race director of the Lake Terramuggus Triathlon Series. Billy is one of the heartlines in the tapestry of our active community. His easy-going nature and effervescent personality made him easy to like. And no matter how stressed he was making sure his Lake T tri's flowed smoothly, he always had time for a high-5 or shout of encouragement. We raise our (PBR) cans in toast to you and wish you much success and happiness in Idaho!
Last Saturday, several of our No Boundaries peeps who are also in a barbershop quartet called Waiting in the Wings honored their coaches before practice with a beautiful rendition of "For Good" from the musical, Wicked. My video skills are lacking, but you can watch it here. The song lyrics couldn't have been more fitting.
To all our coaches, thank you for believing in us and helping us grow into the athletes we are today!

Tops on many Back-to-School Shopping Lists is a new pair of sneakers. Between the summer growth spurt that has their feet bursting out of their shoes, and the extra time spent adventuring outdoors, many kids are wearing sneakers that even a heavy layer of Shoe Goo and duct tape can't salvage.
Besides the hole-y appearance and rank odors, wearing worn-out shoes can be detrimental to developing feet. Good shoes are needed to support a growing body, especially for those who have overly flexible, falling arches or growth plate issues in the heel (Sever's Disease) or knee (Osgood-Schlatter Disease), as well as for kids whose sport of choice requires running. While kids can be rough on their shoes such that they don't last more than a few months, it is important to invest in your kids feet with quality shoes that appropriately FIT their feet and gait to prevent injuries both now and in the future (did you know that wearing too snug of a shoe can make your bunion grow even bigger as it tries to protect itself by producing more bone and soft tissue?). This is why we treat kids the same way as adults and take them through our Fit Process which includes analyzing their bare feet and gait and bringing out a curated selection of shoes that are right for them. This summer we expanded our line of kids' shoes to include youth-sized versions of popular adult shoes like the Brooks Adrenaline & Pure Flow, Asics Gel Noosa & 1000, New Balance 860 and Nike Pegasus. Many shoes have a "pre-school" option which features no-tie elastic laces and Velcro to eliminate the challenges of shoe-tying. Because kid sized shoes are all under $100, they are TAX-FREE from Sunday, August 16 through Saturday, August 22. Even cooler, the first 25 kids to purchase a Brooks kid-sized shoe will receive a FREE Run Happy Sack Pack full of goodies like stickers, shoelaces, water bottle and more. Hurry in while supplies last! |

Channel your inner Maverick from Top Gun and "feel the need, the need for speed". Fall is the perfect time to peak your running and achieve a PR (personal record) at the 5k distance. Whether you are looking to break 20 minutes or 40 minutes for a 5k, we've got a great new program to make it happen.
Based on the success of our summer Speed Development program (congrats to Tim, Janine and Drew pictured at right, on their recent PR's!), Coach James and Michelle will be offering an 8-week Speed Boost program beginning August 25 and culminating with the Glastonbury Apple Harvest 5k on Sunday, October 18. The program is designed for runners who have completed at least 5k in the past 3 months and are ready to spice up your training (we're talking about you No Boundaries graduates!)
Coached workouts will be on Tuesday's at 6pm beginning August 25 with optional, non-coached group runs on Saturday mornings at 8:30am. While you won't be running a lot of miles, you will earn your PR by conquering form drills, speed intervals, hill repeats and tempo runs and teaching your brain to activate your fast-twitch muscles so you move faster at the same effort level.
Get ready to sweat, feel muscles you never knew you had (hello glutes!) and experience the elusive runner's high that comes when you crush a workout and take your fitness to a whole new level.

Roasted Heirloom Tomato Salad
Those first tomatoes of the season feel precious. I prefer to eat them simply and unadulterated. However as the season progresses and the bounty reveals itself, I begin to seek out recipes and get creative, having quenched my initial desire for summer's signature vegetable.
While this recipe is easy, it certainly isn't quick, as the tomatoes need time to roast and caramelize. When the tomatoes are roasting I can tend to other parts of dinner (or the household). Think of the additions as a guideline and a starting point, customizing the meal to fit your palate.
