Winter Warriors

Winter Warriors It's funny where your mind can take you during a run.  This morning I debated which runners were more hard core: Northerners or Southerners. I like to think I gave fair representation to both sides as I've lived in hot spots such as in Atlanta, New Mexico and soupy St. Louis and have now spent 7 winters in Connecticut.

As much as I hate running in hot, humid conditions, I decided Winter Warriors of the North have the edge both mentally and physically. When snow, ice, wind and single-digit temps are involved, it takes more willpower to generate momentum and stick to our New Year's Resolutions to get fit - and we know that just getting out there is half the battle. Many times I resign to bribery involving decedent hot foods and drink to motivate myself to leave my warm bed (whatever extra calories I burn running in the cold, I most assuredly make-up post-run).

Winter Warriors look more hard core than Summer Sweaters too since getting ready to run outside in the cold is akin to preparing for battle. As rousing anthems play in the background, we don our armor comprised of a wicking baselayer, insulating mid-layer and a wind-resistant shell. We slather Vaseline on our hands before sliding them into mittens so they retain warmth better, pull our gaiters over our mouths and noses and lower our hats to just above the eyes. We are half knight, half ninja.

Winter Warriors are more likely to complete a dynamic warm-up pre-run, if only because we're waiting for our GPS watches to locate a satellite. Of course bystanders may think we're crazy as we jump around like fools with one arm pointed towards the sky in an effort to coax our watches to lock on quicker. On the flip side, we don't do so well with the post-run cool-down unless you count the length of the icicles that extend from our hair as proof of being "cool".

The deciding factor is that even easy running routes in the summer become challenging obstacle courses in the winter. Turns out that Mother Nature is one of the toughest trainers one can hire (best of all, she's free!). Routine runs morph into hard-core workouts that work our legs, lungs and core as we leap over snow drifts, steady ourselves on black ice and combat never-relenting wind resistance that no training parachute can replicate. Running in the snow may be beautiful, but running THROUGH the snow will make your core burn more than if you did the Navy Seal Ab Workout.

Regardless of the weather, I always feel empowered after a run - but in the winter, I feel energized to take on the world (or sign up for my next race)! I love the bragging rights that come with saying, "I ran outside today" especially when the weather is particularly raw, and I love the fitness head start you achieve when you don't hibernate.  As my friend Jeff says, "You know you're a runner when your Spring Training begins in January and you are more likely to sit on a baseball than throw one."

Don't let the cold be an excuse. With the right gear and common sense, you can safely run outside. Be Fit. Be Strong. Become a Winter Warrior!

Judd's Shoe Review - Saucony Breakthru
Andrew Judd

It's been quite a while since I have had the pleasure of introducing a brand new shoe, so with that I introduce to you, the Saucony Breakthru!

This shoe has such a unique feel from any other shoe, especially considering the very generous price point ($100). It maintains the 8mm drop that Saucony has become known for over the past 3 years, on a lower platform, but it still has the PowerGrid material so you don't lack on the cushioned feel. This creates a super light, very flexible and responsive ride, while lasting through your long runs without any trouble.

Saucony Breakthru - Women

This shoe does not compromise on the upper, either! It has an upper akin to the current ride, with an even lighter mesh that fits snug, and smoothly. Really, the only thing that is "lower end" is that the midfoot wrap has borrowed the tech from the models a couple of years ago, which really does not mean much in terms of quality ofthe shoe.

Saucony Breakthru - Men

The Breakthru is an amazing balance between light weight, enough cushion, a responsive feel,  sleek looks, and at a great price!

Manchester Road Race Posters
Own a Piece of MRR History!
MRR Posters

The Manchester Road Race Committee is offering a "Finish Line Series" of limited edition posters that capture some of the great moments in the event's history.

The two inaugural posters in the collection depict nine-time champion Amby Burfoot winning the 1971 Manchester Road Race, and Julia Chase-Brand's history-making run in 1961, when she became the first female to complete the road race course.  The posters were designed by Manchester resident Harrison "Whitey" Jenkins.

The Manchester Road Race Committee has commissioned the production of 250 posters of each athlete.  Burfoot and Chase-Brand have both autographed fifty copies of their posters. Proceeds from the sale of the posters will be donated to the Manchester Historical Society, which maintains a collection of Manchester Road Race artifacts.

Unsigned posters are available for $10, and the limited-edition autographed copies cost $25 (both are available at Fleet Feet Sports).  Each poster is 18 X 24 inches and is suitable for framing.

WIP Fitness - Opens 2nd Location!
Now in WeHa and Avon

Mary Kate & LauraWe love the ladies of WIP (Work in Progress) Fitness and are proud to help celebrate the opening of their second location in Avon, CT (369 West Main Street - behind Battison's cleaners)!

Mary Kate Doyle and Laura Keever are two of the most energetic women we know - they make fitness fun!  Their love affair with boot camp started when they joined a friend for a class and were immediately hooked, saying, "We looked better, felt stronger and had a sense of accomplishment after completing each tough workout."  But, while they loved the intensity of the classes, they wanted a less complicated more welcoming experience so they decided to create it themselves!

At WIP Fitness, the focus is on you so even in a group setting, you will get individual attention. Their goal is, in less than one hour, to give you an interval workout that focuses on building your core while combining strengthening moves with quick cardio sequences. The workouts are efficient, fresh and fun (OK, they're tough too!) to keep you engaged and growing stronger. No matter your lifestyle or fitness goals, WIP Fitness has options to suit your needs - and now with two locations on either side of the mountain, getting fit is more convenient!

For more details on their new Avon studio or their original West Hartford location (on New Park Ave, near Home Depot), check out www.wipfitness.com - and take advantage of their sweet introductory offer!

Sweet Potato & Black Bean Soup

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N' Play Logo

I believe you can't have too many soup recipes. It's comforting and warming during winter's cold weather. A large pot can provide meal options for several days. Pair a soup with a salad and dinner is ready. Soup is also a great way to boost your vegetable count.

A soup with beans is a good source of fiber and protein. After consuming rich, high calorie holiday foods, a soup like this feels like you are making strides in the right direction of clean eating.

Sweet Potato and Black Bean Soup

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¾ tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp fennel seeds
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 large sweet potato, cut into ½ inch chunks
  • 2 15 oz cans black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 4 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
  • Sour cream or Greek yogurt to garnish

Directions:

  1. Heat oil in a soup pot and add the onions and cook for 6-8 min until soft and translucent. Add garlic and spices and cook for a minute or two until fragrant.
  2. Add sweet potatoes, black beans and broth. Bring to a boil then simmer for 30 minutes, until the potatoes are falling apart tender.
  3. Use a slotted spoon to remove 3 cups of sweet potatoes and beans. Set aside. With an immersion blender, puree the remaining soup. Add the reserved potatoes and beans back into the pot. Add the lime juice and cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Serve hot with sour cream or yogurt on the side.

What makes you want to run? A new pair of shoes? The beer waiting for you at the end of a race? Getting away from your Mother-in-law? Saucony will be joining us for a fun run to document all the things that make us want to run.

They'll bring a photo booth with cool props and a whiteboard so you can tell the world your reason for running. We'll have a super cool surprise for everyone who gets their photo taken that evening...but you'll have to wait til March to find out what it is!

(Here's a hint: you'll be featured as part of Fleet Feet Hartford history!)

Featured Event:
Colchester Half Marathon
Sat, Feb 28 @ 10am

The 23rd running of the Colchester Half Marathon is Saturday, February 28 at 10am. The Hartford Track Club event begins and ends at Bacon Academy (Colchester's high school) which means warmth pre and post-race, plus access to showers!

Rich Konon, race director for the Colchester Half Marathon, told me that this half marathon is his way of giving back to the running community which supports so many charities through their race entry fees. That's why he keeps the entry fee for this

first-class race just $14 ($20 on race day). While you won't get a shirt or a goody bag, you will definitely get your $14 worth of endorphins, fun, food and drink!

This hilly and chilly half marathon is not for the faint of heart, but it is a favorite race of many runners. The USATF certified course features hills, dirt roads, rural scenery, cows and more hills. After the race, the organizers host a hearty post-race carbo rel-load buffet featuring delicious food and beverages along with post-race massages and plenty of opportunity to commiserate with other runners.
