THE EXTRA MILE
|
Issue #161
August 26, 2014
|
|
|

It catches me by surprise every year around this time. Those seemingly endless summer days and the slower-paced life that go along with them, abruptly come to an end. Almost overnight my Facebook news feed is filled with photos of friends' kids going back to school, reflective vests and headlamps are outselling hats and sunglasses and pumpkin beer is back on tap. Fall is upon us!
Fall in CT is host to some of the best races of the year including the NU Hartford Marathon and Manchester Road Race (big & little!) which means weekly runs become a bit more purposeful and focused...as well as frustrating! To limit those frustrations and restore any confidence you may have lost, here are a few of my favorite race season tips:
Don't Skip Class. It is important that you stick to your training plan (assuming it's a reasonable plan that was designed by a professional). The next few weeks will teach you to run on tired legs and train your brain to handle discomfort - which is especially key if you are racing a half or full marathon where the monkey is sure to jump on your back at some point.
Don't Do Extra Credit. Just as important as following your training plan, so is not doing more than what the plan says or making up for the runs that you will inevitably miss. Resist the urge to go further when you feel great.
Embrace the Bad Run. Everyone has a bad run (or three). I like to think that a really crappy long run means that odds are high that race day will be good. Plus, tough runs make you tougher.
Listen to Your Body. A string of bad runs means that your body isn't recovering. Over-training can lead to injury and burnout. It's a fine line between working through the discomfort to get stronger versus doing damage, but pay attention to the clues your body and mind give you. A day or two of rest may be just what you need to finish training strong.
Practice Speed. If you want to get faster, you need to teach your brain how to fire your muscles more quickly and powerfully. Join us on Thursday evenings (6;30pm at the Newington High School track) for a free speed workout. Even if you only complete a portion of the workout, you will benefit. Plus, you will feel like a superhero after practice!
Refuel. This is not the time to severely diet or tough it out by not hydrating or replenishing your energy stores during and after your run. You might be able to make it through a 10 mile training run without water, but you are cheating your muscles and impeding recovery so they can perform during tomorrow's workout. You should drink at least 4oz of water or electrolyte-enhanced beverage every 20 minutes and take in about ~150-300 calories an hour during training. No need to practice bonking.
Replace Your Shoes. I don't just recommend this because I own a running store. You need to treat your feet well if you want them to go the distance. Most running shoes only last 300-500 miles (less if you choose a lightweight mode) which means if you run 25 miles/week, your shoes will start to noticeably deteriorate in three months.
Worn shoes may be the reason your legs feel so heavy since they can't attenuate shock produced with each footfall (at a rate of 2,000 footfalls per mile, that pounding can wear out a body). Don't wait until race week to replace your shoes - three weeks out from race day is the perfect amount of time (if you are going with the exact same model, you can shorten this to 7-10days).
Have Fun. As the legendary runner Amby Burfoot reminded us, each mile we run is a gift. You can choose to be miserable or try to appreciate the marvel of what your body and mind are capable of. And always remember, you are lapping everyone who choose to stay on the couch or in bed which means YOU WIN!

Judd's Shoe Review: XC Spikes
|
With Cross Country season upon us and our famous spike night this Wednesday (Aug 27 from 4-7pm), I thought it would be appropriate to review spikes, spikes, and SPIKES!
Spikes (or Cross Country flats) are used for race day during the Cross Country season. The point of them is to be light and grippy in rough terrain, from grass fields to mud pits, without compromising speed. How is this done? They have just enough cushion to get you through 5-8k (5k for high schoolers, 8k for collegiate athletes) with the lightest materials from the rubber outsole, to the upper to hold you in place. That's the lightweight part.

The fast and grippy part comes from the specially-designed soft rubber outsole, the spike plate, and spikes themselves. The soft outsole is lighter, and grips a little better in wet, muddy and grassy conditions while the spike plate (which holds the metal spikes in place) provides rigidity and stiffness to yield a responsive, snappy feel as well as protects your foot from rocks and roots.
The actual spikes are the most important part of the shoe. Made of metal, the spikes are removable so you can utilize a variety of different lengths, depending on the course, terrain, and weather. The most common is 3/16 inch spikes, which are just long enough to dig into the dirt yet won't throw you completely off balance if you hit some pavement. The
muddier the course, the longer the spike. On super-wet, muddy courses with no pavement, I've been known to break out the 1" long spikes which look more like a torture weapon that would give Spiderman a run for his money when it comes to gripping things. Instant traction!
This season we are carrying a variety of spikes from Saucony, Nike, New Balance and Brooks. We have models with extra cushioning and comfort for beginner cross runners, as well as super lightweight, high-performance spikes for those looking to win. Tell us which school you run for and we'll give you 10% off your spike purchase and our cool limited edition t-shirt for free while supplies last! There will also be food and more giveaways during our Spike Night this Wednesday.

Urban Challenge - Only 50 Spots Left!
Friday, September 19 @ 6pm
|
It's back and bigger than ever! Registration is now open for this year's Urban Challenge - a combination running and trivia scavenger hunt sponsored by Brooks and West Hartford Center Businesses!
The event is similar to the television show The Amazing Race, with teams of two receiving clues, completing challenges at different locations throughout the Center & Blue Back Square, running from location to location and, in the end, racing to be the first team to the finish line. Knowledge of the area will give you an advantage, but teams can use their phones, Internet and people on the street to help them solve the clues.
Fleet Feet has teamed up with various businesses in the area whose identities are secret until you figure them out from the clues. While we can't reveal who they are, we can tell you that there are some fun (and tough!) challenges in store for you.
The event fee is $30 per person ($60 per two-person team) and includes a high-quality tech tee, pint glass, schwag bag, and awesome after party. There will be prizes for the Top 3 teams, as well other fun categories such as team name, costume, and most-spirited.
You can register online via this link or in-store (there is an additional $5 fee for in-store registration). If you already have a teammate chosen, please register as "Team." If you don't have a partner, please register as "Individual" and we will match you with another solo participant.
Event is limited to 150 two-person teams so register early! This event WILL sell out. Plus, everyone who registers before August 31st is guaranteed to get the shirt size they requested (late registrants will get a shirt, but sizes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Kale Pesto with Zucchini Noodles
By Aubrey Schulz
|

This is the recipe I prepared a few weeks ago for a cooking demo for the Ton of Fun participants. The room smelled wonderfully of garlic and the reaction to the recipe was positive. Many planned to make it at home. From start to finish, including my instruction, the meal came together in 40 minutes. You can use this pesto just as you would a typical basil pesto. My intent was to demonstrate elevating food choices by using a super food like kale.
The pesto is great on shrimp, salmon and chicken. Try it on a sandwich or in lettuce wrap with a kale pesto chicken salad. This recipe makes a lot, close to two cups. Generally you are using a tablespoon or two at a time. So freeze the rest in ice cube trays and then transfer to a labeled freezer bag. You can toss a cube into pasta, spaghetti squash, sautéed veggies whenever your flavors need a boost.
Kale Pesto with Zucchini Noodles
Ingredients:
- 1 bunch (4-5 cups) kale, stemmed and ripped into pieces
- 2 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
- ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
- ¼ cup parmesan cheese, grated
- ¼ cup almonds
- 1 lemon, juiced
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 3-4 small zucchini
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 ear of corn
Directions:
- Place kale in a strainer over the sink and pour several cups of boiling water over (this will blanch any bitterness from the kale).
- Combine kale, garlic, olive oil, parmesan cheese, almonds and lemon in a food processor and pulse well until you have a smooth paste. Salt to taste.
- Using a spiralizer, make zucchini noodles.
- Toss 1-2 Tbsp kale pesto with the noodles.
- Using a knife, slice the corn kernels off the cob and into the kale noodles. Top with tomatoes and serve.
