Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem!A few weeks ago, I needed a little inspiration. My running was in a slump and the challenges of running a business were more stressful than usual. The days blended together, each not very different from the rest. I needed a reminder that I was the captain of my life.  A reminder to seize the day, make my life extraordinary and let out the occasional barbaric YAWP!  I needed a refresher from Professor Keating and the Dead Poets Society.

The movie invigorated me just as it did 25 years ago when I watched it in the theater the day after graduating from high school.  The movie's theme of Carpe Diem became my mantra and life's guiding force.  Whenever I'm in a tough situation, I am reminded to look at things a different way.  The movie made me believe that words and ideas can really change the world - and that those words and ideas need to come from regular people like you and me.

I was saddened by the news of Robin Williams' death yesterday.  To me he will always be Professor Keating - as well as an alien named Mork, a hysterical genie, a cross-dressing nanny and an army DJ in Vietnam.  I loved how he used his talent with words to infuse our world with humor and teach us to stand up for what we believe is right.

I respect him even more knowing that while he was giving the world a reason to smile and laugh, he was dealing with the pain and demons created by depression.  He leaves us with a powerful reminder that we never know the pain others might be dealing with.  We must always choose to be kind to one another - and strive to live extraordinary lives.  In tribute to Robin Williams, stand on your desk (or kitchen table) and call out Oh Captain, my Captain!

In an act of kindness to give back to the running community who has supported him in victory and defeat (especially defeating depression last year), running legend Amby Burfoot, is coming to our track workout on Thursday, August 21 at the Conard High School track.

From 6-6:30pm he will reveal his secrets for a lifetime of running from his book, "A Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life" and share stories of his running adventures which include winning the 1968 Boston Marathon, running 51 consecutive Manchester Road Races and sharing a dorm room and team bus with the likes of Bill Rodgers and Jeff Galloway in college.

At 6:30pm he will guest coach our track workout.  Come run with a legend...and make your run extraordinary!

Judd's Shoe Review:  Mafate Speed 3
Andrew Judd

We finally received the long-awaited update to the Hoka One One line: the Mafate Speed 3. This has been one of their most successful and intense ultra-racing shoes they have ever made. During a 50 mile race, the one thing you will want is cushion, and this shoe has that in spades.

Mafate Speed 3 Sole With a 31mm forefoot, and a 35mm heel stack height, you get your efficient stride with low offset, and maximum cushion (nearly 3x thicker than most other shoes out there) built out of their special RMAT EVA midsole, it is as plush as the ultra-marathon is long.

Mafate Speed 3The upper is very streamlined, and snug which is great for racing, with just enough room for the expansion of your foot when is swells (and it will). The tread is the perfect balance between technical trail grip, and compatibility with roads to keep you comfortable in all terrain, and any race. All of this cushion and tread in a 12oz package.

The Mafate Speed 3 will be your absolute pinnacle of Ultra-marathon running. If you want to stay comfortable through any number of miles that you will be running, you definitely want to give this shoe a try.

Casey's Favs

New Nike apparel has just arrived along with some fun new products.  Come on in and take a look (and don't forget all apparel purchases from Sunday, August 17 - Saturday, August 23 are TAX-FREE!).

Nike's Impossibly Light Jacket Nike's Impossibly Light Jacket (men & women): At just 3 ounces, it is Nike's lightest jacket ever!  And not just light, but the DWR (durable water-repellant finish) offers wind and water resistance to help protect against the elements.  The hooded jacket also packs into its own pocket complete with a hand-strap so you can carry it easily while running.  Wickedly awesome!

Sport Suds

SportSuds:  Finally, a

powdered detergent designed for your sweaty, stinky technical running clothes!  SportSuds is an odor-eliminating, residue-free laundry detergent that is eco-friendly. Conventional laundry detergents contain additives and chemicals that remain on your clothes and clog your wash machine's drum.  SportSuds not only removes stains, bacteria and odors from your clothes, but removes those deposits so your technical fabrics work better/longer and your wash machine stays cleaner. This detergent is safe for HE machines and works great on your regular clothes too!

Wrap Bracelets & Shoe Charms Runner Bling (Bracelets & Shoe Charms): Express your love of running, living fit or favorite mantra with the super cute Motivate Wrap Bracelet or FootNote shoe charms. The bracelet's unique design will not rub, squeeze, slip or chafe so you can wear it on the run, while you practice yoga, lift weights or do strenuous floor work.  The stretchy fabric band and aluminum charm are so comfortable, you will forget to take it off!

Bracelet not for you?  Check out the FootNote shoe charms that slide easily onto your shoelaces where they will stay in place while you jump, kick, run, lift, dance, and otherwise be your sporty self!

Urban Challenge

Urban Challenge
It's back and bigger than ever!  Registration is now open for this year's Urban Challenge - a combination running and trivia scavenger hunt sponsored by Brooks and West Hartford Center Businesses!

The event is similar to the television show The Amazing Race, with teams of two receiving clues, completing challenges at different locations throughout the Center & Blue Back Square, running from location to location and, in the end, racing to be the first team to the finish line. Knowledge of the area will give you an advantage, but teams can use their phones, Internet and people on the street to help them solve the clues.

Fleet Feet has teamed up with various businesses in the area whose identities are secret until you figure them out from the clues. While we can't reveal who they are, we can tell you that there are some fun (and tough!) challenges in store for you.

The event fee is $30 per person ($60 per two-person team) and includes a high-quality tech tee, pint glass, schwag bag, and awesome after party. There will be prizes for the Top 3 teams, as well other fun categories such as team name, costume, and most-spirited.

You can register online via this link or in-store (there is an additional $5 fee for in-store registration). If you already have a teammate chosen, please register as "Team." If you don't have a partner, please register as "Individual" and we will match you with another solo participant.

Event is limited to 150 two-person teams so register early! This event WILL sell out. Plus, everyone who registers before August 31st is guaranteed to get the shirt size they requested (late registrants will get a shirt, but sizes will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis).

Hummus Covered Chicken

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N' Play Logo

With an abundance of basil from the garden, the logical choice would be to make pesto. However I had recently made kale pesto, so I was reluctant to make another batch of pesto. I had a flash of creativity. I wondered how about basil hummus? A quick Google search showed it wasn't a novel idea and one of the bloggers I like had posted a recipe. Check out Simply Recipes' Basil Hummus recipe.

With an abundance of hummus in the fridge, I needed to start cooking with it. Another internet search pulled up the recipe I've adapted below. This chicken dish comes together very easily. The squash paired well with the lemon and basil. The eggplant was a nice accompaniment to the chickpeas in the hummus. It's a recipe that will help you eat down a bunch of fresh veggies from your garden, farmer's market or CSA.

Hummus Covered Chicken

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 boneless chicken breasts
  • 2 zucchini or summer squash, chopped
  • 1 eggplant, chopped
  • 1 cup hummus, store bought or homemade
  • olive oil
  • 2 lemons
  • Salt and pepper
  • paprika

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450. Coat a baking dish with olive oil.
  2. Pat the chicken dry and season with salt and pepper.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the veggies with olive oil, salt and pepper. Add them to the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. Lay the chicken breasts on top and coat both sides with hummus. Squeeze the juice of one lemon over the chicken and veggies. Thinly slice the other lemon and nestle the slices along the top of the chicken and veggies. Sprinkle with paprika.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the veggies are tender.
