A New Perspective
Achilles Runners "Find the drive to climb after your own goals and provide the same support for others; this cannot be done alone."

-Josh Crary ("The Boston Blind Runner")

I love that running can be intimately personal, as well as completely social.  I enjoy solitary runs that allow me to think or just let my mind wander as much as I enjoy the comradery and conversation that running with others provides.  I like testing my legs and lungs as much as I like taking it easy, running hills versus striding the flats, leaping over roots and rocks or sprinting around a track.

To me, being a runner is an avenue to challenge myself, accomplish goals and prove that I can do anything I set my body, mind and soul to.  I am addicted to that empowered feeling that occurs when you conquer a goal.

But as I get older (read: slower), I have to be more creative because PR's are much harder to come by.  Now, my goals usually entail completing a new distance or hybrid race that includes obstacles or setting a new record for the number of bird dips I can do before losing my balance.

I also find happiness in paying it forward through coaching and mentoring new runners.  Whether it's helping kids run their first mile without stopping or an adult complete their first 5k, there is something truly special when you play a part in helping someone conquer their goal.  I love getting goose bumps on race day again and being all emotional at the finish line. I love the energy, the high 5's and the sweaty hugs.  It makes running fresh and new again.

If you are ready to share your love of running, I invite you to get involved with us as we support the Hospital for Special Care's Adaptive Sports Program and members of the Achilles International team achieve their goal of competing in the NU Hartford Marathon races.  Your first opportunity is this Friday from 7-8:30pm, when we host a "Recruitment Party" to find runners and cyclists willing to train and race with athletes from the Adaptive Sports Program (which includes wheelchair-bound children).  Many of the athletes, especially the kids, are training to complete the 5k, but several of the adult wheelchair racers who will be testing their mettle on the half and full marathon course.

Then on Thursday, July 31, we are hosting a special fundraiser in conjunction with our Track Workout to help cover the race entry fees for athletes and Guides.  The event, called "Run in the Dark", will give you the opportunity to experience running blind as well as guiding a blind runner as teams of four compete in a unique 1 Mile relay.  I imagine it will give us all a new perspective on running and the gift of sight.

Judd's Shoe Review:  Brooks Glycerin 12

Andrew Judd

Following up the incredibly successful Brooks Glycerin 11, the Glycerin 12 certainly lives up to the name, and then some. If you don't know what the Glycerin is, it's a high-level, very plush neutral shoe. For the past two years it has been dominating the premium level neutral category. The 12 is on track to continue that streak.

The platform is a little broader, giving more surface area to create a more stable, and more cushioned landing. The DNA that is what made this shoe such a fierce competitor has been upgraded to the latest and greatest

SuperDNA midsole, creating a 25% higher DNA content, meaning more cushion and more plush. SuperDNA does away with the Drop-in style of EVA with DNA on top. This means that the entire midsole is a combination of EVA and DNA material, giving much more consistency, and adding a little to the flexibility and durability of the shoe.

Brooks Glycerin 12 - Men

The signature on the Glycerin that really won people over is the fit. It is a super tuned-in fit that feels good with minimal friction on almost any foot. Brooks knows how awesome this fit was, and did not want to mess with something that worked, so there are minimal changes to the upper, except for just an inkling more control in the forefoot.

The Brooks Glycerin line has shown us time and time again how Brooks manages to lead the running industry, with the latest model not relenting on the improvements and innovation.

Casey's Favs

When I think about running in the winter I don't just think about the cold, I think about all the accessories I need to go with it - hats, gloves, warm socks, baselayers, etc. Summer running is no different! When the strong sun rays are beating down on me there's definitely several accessories I won't leave home without:

Running Hats

Hat: Keep your cool and protect your eyes from harsh glare!  Don't cap your head with a snug, thick fabric hat from your favorite sports team. Instead, opt for a hat or visor with a roomier lid and breathable mesh. As an added bonus, most running hats have a terrycloth inner band to catch your sweat. We have options from Nike, Brooks and The North Face in both unisex and female specific fits - and fun colors too!

Naawk Sunscreen Sunscreen & Sunglasses: If you run between sunrise and sunset, you need to protect both your skin and your eyes from the sun's harmful UV rays.  Arriving in-store soon are sun care products (sunscreen, lip balm and aloe) from Naawk.  Naawk is the official sunscreen of Ragnar Relay and is made with ingredients you can pronounce like beeswax, shea and cocoa butter, sunflower oil and Vitamin E.  You will love its non-sticky, non-pour clogging feel and soft natural scent.  The Aloe Relief Gel is perfect for soothing your skin post workout if you got a bit too much sun and/or windburn.

Sunglasses

Just as you wear sunscreen to protect your skin, you should wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from those evil UV rays and reduce eye fatigue caused by squinting (especially during your long runs).  Sport sunglasses like those made by Tifosi and Nike also provide crisp, uninhibited vision that can help you better view of the edge of a curb, pothole or tree root.  Tifosi even makes "readers" that magnify your view so you can see those tiny numbers on your watch!

Amphipod Custom Belt
Hydration Solutions:  Warmer temps require increasing your fluid intake. Before your run and every hour, try to drink at least eight ounces of water or electrolyte-enhanced beverage so your perspiration systems are in tip-top shape. We have a great variety of hydration solutions including vests, belts and handhelds, including a fantastic new system from Amphipod that allows you to customize your hydration and nutrition needs. As an added bonus, when you purchase the basic kit (belt, two bottles and a pocket), you get a FREE Fleet Feet race bag!

Socks!

Socks: You've heard it before, "Cotton is Rotton". Avoid sweat-soaking, friction-inducing cotton socks and instead, wear moisture-wicking fabrics like synthetic polyester and natural wool.

All of the socks we offer at the store are good for you...but which sock is the "right" one for you?  Here's the breakdown:

Darn Tough VT: Perfect for hitting the trails, especially when it's wet or humid. These made-in-VT socks feature a custom count, shrink-treated Merino wool that is blended with CoolMax to create a sock with exceptional softness, durability and superior moisture management. Available in ultra-thin and cushioned thicknesses as well as "no-show", quarter and crew heights.

Balega: Your trusty go-to sock.  Feels like premium cotton, except that it's a special polyester blend that is super soft.  Seamless toes, double-gore heel (so it never slips down into your shoe) and a vent-mesh top to reduce bulk and increase comfort.  Ahhh-mazing!

Feetures!: Perfect if you like a thinner sock with a touch of compression. Made with power bands of Lycra designed to contour to the individual shape of your foot. This fit delivers the perfect amount of compression so that each sock hugs the foot in a comfortable, supportive way.  Socks are right and left-foot specific to provide extra cushion in the areas where it's needed most.

Experia by Thorlo: These socks will make your feet feel like you're walking on clouds. Specially sculpted pads in the ball and heel provide protection from impact where needed while the ultra-lightweight sock frame contours to your foot to give an aerodynamic glove-like fit.  Perfect for long-runs!

Motion Analysis Study

Volunteers (ages 4-30) Needed

Children's Medical

The Center for Motion Analysis at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center is conducting research to better understand the mechanics of walking and running.  As part of the study, the are creating a reference database from healthy active persons to compare with the data collected from those with chronic physical disabilities and orthopedic issues.

They are looking for kids and young adults (age 4-30) with no current injuries to participate in their study.  As part of the study, the researchers perform a motion analysis of you while walking and running in order to collect comprehensive 3D kinematic data.  The process takes about an hour.

BBQ Tempeh Kabobs

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N' Play Logo

If you are looking to broaden your food options this summer, a great food to try is tempeh. It is made from fermented soybeans that are pressed into a cake-like form. The more common varieties you will find in the grocery store have been combined with whole grains and other flavors, in an attempt to widen its appeal.

Unlike many other soy products (like soy burgers and soy milk), tempeh is closer to its whole food state and has undergone less processing. The fermentation necessary to its production also boosts its health benefits. It increases its digestibility and nutrient absorption. There is also less controversy surrounding fermented soy foods in the discussion about cancer prevention.

Tempeh has been linked with boosting cardiovascular health and in the prevention and treatment of both obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. A wide range of proteins and phytonutrients are in a serving of tempeh. It is a very good source of fiber and copper, and a good source of protein, phosphorus and magnesium.  This vegetarian dinner tastes great on the grill and comes together easily. Perfect for a warm summer night.

BBQ Tempeh Kabobs

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp lower-sodium soy sauce
  • 8 ounces organic soy tempeh (cut into 16 pieces)
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced in half
  • 1 pint grape tomatoes
  • Orange bell pepper, cut into squares
  • Wooden 8 skewers

Directions:

  1. Combine olive oil, soy sauce, and tempeh. Let stand for 20 minutes.
  2. Add ¼ cup BBQ sauce. Toss.
  3. Thread tempeh, mushroom, tomato, and pepper onto skewers.
  4. Place skewers on a grill rack lightly coated with olive oil. Grill 9 minutes or until browned, turning skewers occasionally for an even char.
