In what seems like a blink of an eye, six years has gone by. On June 9, 2008, my sister and I officially became the new owners of Fleet Feet Sports, Hartford. I remember that day vividly. It was the day my life changed.
The day began with a trip to the bank (the first of four trips to the bank that day) to pick up a cashier's check that would buy the store from its previous owner and creator, Alice Gold, who I am still so grateful to, because were it not for her vision and hard work, my dream probably wouldn't have come true.
The check represented my life savings, my sister's savings and money borrowed from my parents who took out a home equity loan. The weight of responsibility it meant was huge. For the first time in my life, I was responsible for someone other than myself. I think I matured 20 years in that instant. I vowed to not let my parents and sister down and ensure that their investment in me was secure.
I tried to seem composed and collected in the lawyer's office as we closed the deal, but inside I was a mess. Scared. Excited. Intimidated. Eager. I wondered if I could really pull this off - and hoped that the check I brought would cover all of the costs. Which it didn't. So back to the bank I went to pull out all but $244 from my bank account.
As I walked into the store - my store! - reality set in. It was show time! The staff greeted me with a round of applause that infused me with energy and happiness, and together we opened the door. Customers started coming in, and the cash register started buzzing. Until someone wanted to pay with cash and needed change. Opps! I had forgotten to put any money in the register drawer. Back to the bank I went to get $200. I crumpled the slip showing my account balance into a ball and tossed it into the garbage without even looking at it.
The rest of the day was a whirlwind. I quickly realized that being the owner meant the buck stopped with me. If someone had a question or a problem, I had to provide the answer. I couldn't hide. But I didn't come to Connecticut to hide. I came to share my passion for helping people live fit and have the opportunity to change their own lives.
The past six years have not disappointed. No, they have exceeded even my wildest dreams. I have never worked so hard in my life, but I don't really consider it work. I get to do what I love every day. I still get excited as I turn onto Farmington Ave on my way into work and get goosebumps when I see someone out for a walk or jog in shoes from the store. I am honored to be a part of this community and am sincerely appreciative for your support and love of the store...and me.
As for that fourth visit to the bank on opening day, it was to make my first deposit!
Be Fit!

Overtraining Syndrome
|

Have you ever had a bad run? Chances are you probably have. We all have! Usually, the next run is a good one, and we move on and continue with training. In some cases, the bad runs continue. Run after run, you get the feeling that you just aren't making any improvements, and maybe you are even declining in your fitness. There is a condition called Overtraining Syndrome that runners should be aware of.
Running, or exercise in general, breaks down the body. This breakdown is normal and with proper recovery after a workout or training cycle, the body repairs itself. Proper recovery allows the body to adapt to all of the stress (volume and intensity of running) you have been placing on it. As this adaptation occurs; muscles, tendons, and bones become stronger and the cardiovascular system becomes more efficient. All of this adds up to fitness and performance gains.
The key here is rest and recovery. Without it, symptoms of overtraining can start to set in. Many runners will continue to run through early symptoms, thinking, "It's just a bad run, I'll run through it", or "I'm out shape, I need to train more to get better." Ignoring these symptoms can make your recovery time longer.

Judd's Shoe Review: Nike Pegasus 31
|
This week we will be looking at the shoe that year after year breaks its own record for being around the longest. This shoe came into being in 1982 (there was a discontinuation, and community uproar in the late 90's), the Nike Pegasus 31!
The Pegasus is always the go-to shoe for runners who know what they need, and what they need is a good solid shoe, without any frills. It is always exactly what you need to make sure you don't get injured, but you don't have to break the bank for it. This year's Pegasus has seen the bigger update that it has had in a few years. First, the engineered mesh is better than ever. Nike really tuned in where the upper needs more support, and where it can be more breathable, and lightweight. That is paired with a completely new midfoot wrap to hug the foot, but not constrict it. These updates make the shoe fit better than ever.
My favorite change has been on the platform of the shoe, though. The bottom is much less tapered off around the midfoot, creating a slightly more stable surface, with just a little bit more give for the pounding you put on it. The lateral (outside of the foot) has been more segmented, allowing for a ton of extra flexibility along that outside of the foot, giving a lot more cushioned of a feel on the last metatarsal bone, which very often gets injured or fractured for major under-pronators. All of this is, of course, built around the patented Nike Zoom units to create a high cushion shoe that remains durable through all of the miles you put on it.
One more thing that I thought was aesthetically cool (even though that's not the point of the shoe) is the classic waffle-iron design to the outsole, really paying tribute to the roots of how Nike started in a garage.
The Nike Pegasus 31 has seen a great update, and has become the most versatile, and well-designed edition of the shoe that we have seen in recent years. Come in and give it a try!

Escape to Vermont with Us!
Run/Bike/Hike Retreat - August 1-3
|
One of the best parts of Fleet Feet is the community that we've created and the friends that we've made. You can't help but have a good time when you are surrounded by runners. Even better if the good time takes place in a beautiful location and includes amazing food, drink...and you.
This summer, we are inviting our community to join us for some R&R&R (rest, relaxation and running!) in Vermont. Our weekend getaway will take place on August 1-3 in Pittsfield, VT (the home of the original Spartan Race) and will be hosted by Tom and Erlin from Perfect Vermont - an awesome young couple who left the big city to follow their dream of offering healthy living retreats that challenge guests to get outdoors, live consciously and experience life simplified.
Stacy and Steph met Tom & Erlin and scoped out the area a few weeks ago and can't wait to share it with you. A favorite hike was up the stone steps (built by the participants in the Spartan Death Race) to Shrek's house - beautiful! Pittsfield is the perfect location for our trip: mountains, streams, lodging from primitive to pampered, food from organic farms catered by an amazing chef, endless trails for running, hiking and biking, kayaking and friends galore (some of whom you haven't met yet). Our Perfect Vermont Retreat includes two nights' accommodation, two guided trail runs/hikes, Saturday box lunch and a bountiful, homemade farm-to-table dinner with the group in a beautiful reclaimed barn. Cost is $180 for primitive accommodations (camping) or $420 for pampered lodging in a beautiful Adirondack Cabin (costs include 9% lodging tax). You may add on additional options such as a tour of a wonderful local organic farm called Sweet Georgia P's where you will make an herb box to take home, bike (road and mountain) and kayak rentals as well as guided bike tours. The retreat welcomes people of all ages and abilities (kids 18 years and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). For more information, contact Erlin at 802-746-8428 or retreats@perfectvermont.com. To reserve your spot, complete this form. Each person in your group/family should fill out a form - and send it to Perfect Vermont with your payment. |

Black Pepper Cauliflower Salad
By Aubrey Schulz
|

With the weather warming up, I find myself making more salads. Most nights it's one or two veggies chopped up and served over salad greens. Other times I'll seek out a recipe that pulls together a variety of ingredients in an interesting fashion. I like how the cauliflower is the star of this dish, with the other common salad additions playing a supporting role. The easily assembled salad dressing ties it all together.
Black Pepper Cauliflower Salad
Ingredients:
- 2 lb head of cauliflower, cut into tiny florets
- ¾ cup red onion, diced
- ¼ cup red wine vinegar
- ⅓ cup olive oil
- ¾ tsp sea salt
- 1 Tbsp black peppercorns, crushed
- 1 cup toasted pistachios, roughly chopped
- ½ crumbled feta cheese
- 3 apples, diced
- ⅓ cup black olives, chopped
- 1 Tbsp tarragon, chopped
Directions:
- Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the cauliflower and cook for 1 minute. Drain, rinse with cold water to stop cooking and allow to drain fully.
- Combine the red onion, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper together in a skillet over medium heat. Once the onions have turned pink and infused the oil/vinegar mixture remove from heat and set aside.
- Add the cauliflower to a large bowl and combine with ⅔ of dressing, pistachios, cheese, apples, and olives. Toss gently. Add more salt and/or dressing if needed. Garnish with the tarragon.

We will be hosting a blood drive for the American Red Cross on Father's Day (June 15) from 10am-3pm. To sign-up, please click here and enter "FleetFeet" in the "Find a Blood Drive" search box.

Thurs Night "Urban Track"
6:30pm (at Riverside Park)
|
|
Track workouts are back!
Cheers to the folks at Riverfront Recapture! They are giving us permission to host our "track workout" at Riverside Park (just north of downtown Hartford off I-91).
While the park doesn't have a traditional track, we love this area because of the diversity of workouts it can provide. There is a one-mile paved path for speedy intervals, 4.5 miles of shaded trail for gentle warm-ups/cool-downs and tempos, a grassy field for strides, drills & core work and a steep berm for hill repeats. It's the perfect "Urban Track"!
If you feel the need for speed or some spice to your weekly workouts, join Coach Brian at the park every Thursday at 6:30pm - meet at the Boathouse.
Workouts will be catered to both beginners and more experienced runners. Our goal is to help you get stronger and faster - no experience necessary! Best of all, the program is FREE!
Coach Brian will be sending out an email every Wednesday with details about the Urban Track Workout. To get on his mailing list, email him at

Yoga for Runners
Sunday's @ 5:30pm
($15/class)
| |
Stop! Don't Stretch It.
When most get injured, sore, or tired the first instinct is to get in there and stretch it. Most of the time that is NOT a good idea. Visualize an old rubber band. That rubber band may have tiny tears in it and it may be lacking the ability to stretch. This is injured tissue in your body. You have an overworked muscle or connective tissue that has these tiny adhesions in it. Visualize what happens if you pull and tug on it. You will deepen those adhesions and tears. Ouch. You have just caused deeper and further damage.
I recommend stretching only when your tissue is healthy. And in athletes, most of the time that stretching can be done in a yoga that is balanced with your athletic training.
So, what do you do if you have an injured or overworked muscle or connective tissue? REST! This is the first order. Once you've rested it, I highly recommend working on mobility. I have all of my athletes working on mobility. I prescribe a MINUMUM of 5 minutes per day- no days off. You can get any mobility ball; high end ones are nice but a lacrosse ball will work just fine, wands and foam rollers work too. Wands, foam rollers, and such work great too. Get on that ball and roll on it, press it into your muscle, ligament, or tendon. If it hurts to the point where you stop breathing, you need to back off and ease up on the pressure.
Move slowly and when you find a "hot spot" or a point that you can clearly feel needs work, hold the ball there and apply pressure. Breathe and it will release usually in about 30 seconds. This process can be extremely uncomfortable, but it is efficient and you will feel immediate results. In my Athlete Focused Yoga classes, I typically have my athletes work mobility first, then we move on to carefully modified stretches.
When you are in a yoga class or engaging in a recovery-type activity to support your running, cycling, swimming, etc.- you will know and understand your body better than anyone else. No matter what you are told, if you are in pain, something doesn't feel right, or it feels risky- don't do it! We use yoga and various other recovery based activities to support our sport. Don't injure yourself trying to recover.
Be smart. It is great to work on range of motion and mobility to promote recovery and proper function. But, never ever overstretch. It is just silly to injure yourself in yoga class in the name of recovery.
A yoga class for competitive people that can't easily touch their toes- THAT'S US! Come check our class out- Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p!
