We Run As One

Boston Strong The Boston Marathon is one of the running community's defining events.  The beloved race is steeped in history and tradition.  As you run those storied streets, you can sense the ghosts of runner's past just as surely as you feel the cheers of runner's future.  It's a magical, mythical experience that brings together running's elites and mere mortals like you and I.

For nearly 26 miles, there is a continuous ribbon of runners connecting Hopkinton to the heart of Boston.  Like an intricate tapestry, each runner represents a thread with its own story.  When those threads are woven together, an even greater, more beautiful story is told.  One need only to look at the bonds of friendship and family formed between running partners.

Last year that tapestry was ripped into many pieces as two bombs exploded near the finish line.  What was meant to inflict fear and injury and tear our community apart only served to strengthen and further connect us.  Bystanders used their own jackets and belts to make tourniquets, medical personnel ran towards the explosion sites to help the injured despite the continued threat of danger, while athletes, depleted after running 26.2 miles, raced towards area hospitals to donate blood. Bostonians opened their houses up to strangers.  As former-staffer Schuyler Schuster so eloquently said, "One act of violence was met with a thousand acts of compassion".

I will never cease to be amazed by the compassion and perseverance of our community.  In honor of that spirit, the Boston Public Library is preparing a new exhibition called "Dear Boston: Messages from the Marathon Memorial".  Included is a display of some of the 600 running shoes left behind at the memorial in the days after the attack.

As runners, we know just how meaningful a gift those shoes are.  They represent the realization of our dreams that were hard won after many, many miles of training.  Our shoes have scars from our journey that included battles with uneven pavement, hills, rain, sleet, snow and ice.  They are an extension of our soul.  Our membership card to prove we are a runner.

This year's Boston Marathon is destined to be a huge celebration of that indomitable spirit. Whether you are spectating from afar or in-person, running or volunteering, on April 21, we all run as one.

Be Fit!

Note: Our community doesn't limit its support to runners; we share our time, talents and treasures with friends and strangers alike.  In that light, we have two special events this week:

The first is in support of FF Peep and fundraiser extraordinaire Grace Bergin and her lemonade stand which raises money for CT Children's Hospital.  Whole Foods in West Hartford (both locations) and Glastonbury will be donating 5% of their net sales on Wednesday to Grace's campaign.  If a trip to Whole Foods is on your To-Do List this week, please consider making time to shop on Wednesday.

The second is an informative seminar by financial adviser and FF Peep, Gary Schwartz.  He will provide tips for end-of-life financial planning and estate guidance this Wednesday evening at 7pm.  Definitely not a seminar you would expect from a running store, but it's information that can be incredibly valuable and appreciated when a loved one passes away.

Breast Pain & Sports Bras: What Every Women Needs to Know

Stacy Provencher

We spend a lot of time talking about running injuries and how to prevent them; shin splints, plantar fasciitis, knee pain, etc. One topic that is hardly ever touched upon, but perhaps the most important, is the potential soft tissue damage that female runners can cause in their breasts. Breast pain is one of the most common complaints of female runners. In a survey conducted at the 2012 London Marathon, 32% of women indicated they experience breast pain while running.

Most female runners wear a sports bra. The big question is, are you wearing the correct sports bra? Eight out of 10 women wear the wrong size sports bra. Are you one of them? Do you wear two bras to help decrease breast movement with exercise? Does your bra cause chafing?  This article focuses on what happens to the breast tissue during exercise and what you can do to limit potential damage.

Sports Bra

Anatomically, the breast has very little built in support. There are Coopers ligaments that support the tissue, but other than that, there are no other support systems in place.  When running, uncontained breasts can oscillate up to 8 inches! This movement is not only up and down, it's also side to side and front to back. It has been proven through motion studies that the breasts actually move in a figure 8 pattern during running. Ouch!

Coopers ligaments can't withstand all of this force by themselves, which is why a good sports bra is so important. The largest indicator of breast pain with exercise is cup size, with a larger cup being at higher risk for pain. After cup size, the next most influential factor in pain is breast movement. Studies have shown similar degrees of movement of the breast tissue with running paces from jogging to sprinting. So it doesn't matter how fast or slow you go, proper support is a must!

Judd's Shoe Review:  Topo Cross-Trainers

Andrew Judd

Cross training is an important part of a runner's training.  While a running shoe can be used during cross trainer, your workouts are more effective when you are wearing a shoe specifically designed for workouts that strengthen your core, improve your flexibility and generate dynamic energy.  Which is why we're really excited about a new company that is storming the market with some fantastic cross training/speed & agility shoes options.

Topo Motto Topo Athletic is the latest brainchild of Tony Post, who helped create the famous Five Fingers shoes when he was CEO of Vibram USA.  Post integrated the best features of the Five Fingers into his new line of shoes which have already generated a lot of industry buzz and awards.  Topo's philosophy is not about their technology being the best or the shoes doing the work for you. Instead, Topo's shoes are simply meant to help you do the work that you want to do for yourself.

Topo STWe are currently carrying the RX (a split-toe model designed for workouts that involve jumping, lifting, running and climbing) and the ST (a non-split toe shoe designed for speed and response in the gym and on the race course).  Both shoes are very lightweight, anatomically designed and feature a 0mm heel-to-toe drop to provide supreme balance, grip and a fit that feels like a natural extension of your foot.  Combine that with a high traction outsole, cushioned midsole and a seamless upper, and you have a shoe that helps you get more performance out of your body.

Topo RX If your weekly workouts include a trip to your favorite CrossFit box to rock the WOD or other gym designed for functional movement, you need to give these shoe a try (especially the RX which really enhances power and balance thanks to the split toe).  Same with fans of running in minimal footwear - the ST allows you to feel the road and get maximum feedback from your body.  In our book, these shoes make Topo the big newcomer of the year!

Want to try these shoes in "real life"?  Join us at CrossFit Thin Blue Line in Manchester on Monday, April 14 from 4:30-6:30pm.

SPORTS BRAS:

 *****************************

April is Sports Bra Month here at Fleet Feet Sports!  Finding a great sports bra is like trying to find the perfect pair of jeans. It takes time and effort and several tries before finding the one that fits just right. But it's worth it because a sports bra is the most personal and essential piece of gear for active women.

Like running shoes, there are three main categories of support which the experts at Moving Comfort have named:  secure, stabilize and control.  Read on to learn more about each category and our favorite sports bra styles for each.

Vixen

Secure: These are your traditional, "over your head" racer-back bras that provide support via compression - though some now have molded cups for shape and modesty so you don't have to settle for the "uni-boob" look.  These classic bras that you grew-up wearing are available in fashion colors and move seamlessly with your body.Best for A & C cups with smaller rib cages (28-36 band size)

Favorite styles include Moving Comfort's Serena (seamless), Vixen (molded cups -shown above) and the new Just Right Racer.  We also have options from New Balance including the Fab Framer, Airy Racer and Seamless Genius, as well as Nike's Pro bra.

Stabilize: Offering fantastic shape, adjustability and hook-and-eye closures which provide easy-on/easy-off, these bras offer a high-degree of support without feeling overbearing.  These bras support via encapsulation which separates the girls and supports them individually.  Best for B-DD cups, with band sizes from 32-44.

Fiona

The #1 sports bra on the market, Moving Comfort's Fiona (above), leads this category followed by its "sister" Jubralee and the Rebound Racer which looks like a racer-back with cups and a clasp closure.  New Balance's Shockingly Unshocking and Discreetly Sassy are favorites.

Control: These sports bras offer super support via compression and encapsulation for those with zero tolerance for bounce.  Oprah's favorite bra, the Enell, is like a vest that locks the girls down tight, while Moving Comfort's Juno (below), CWX and Shock Absorber feature technologies that are more discrete to allow for a flattering and very comfortable fit.  Best for C-F cups, with bands ranging from 32-52.

Swiss Chard Quiche

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N' Play Logo Springtime and Easter brunches are just around the corner. This recipe takes the familiar egg and cheese quiche and combines it with the nutritional powerhouse, Swiss chard. Like other green leafys, chard is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Researchers are currently studying the healthful impacts of the vast array of phytonutrients present in chard. It has been shown to benefit blood sugar regulation, offer anti-inflammatory support and assist bone health. It is an excellent source of vitamins K, A, E and C, magnesium, copper and iron. It is a very good source of fiber (3.7 g for 1 cup cooked) and protein (3.3g for 1 cup cooked).

Fiber and protein rich foods are an excellent way to stabilize blood sugar levels because they regulate the speed of digestion and keep food moving at the appropriate pace through our digestive tract.

The crust needs to be made in advance and cooled so adjust your meal planning accordingly. Once the crust is complete, the remaining ingredients come together easily for a veggie rich spin on the traditional broccoli or asparagus quiche.

Swiss Chard Quiche:

Ingredients:

   Herb Crust

  • 1 ½ cups almond flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp scallions, minced
  • ¼ cup grapeseed oil
  • 1 Tbsp water

    Quiche:

  • 3 cups Swiss Chard, roughly chopped (stems discarded)
  • ¼ cup red onions, chopped
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 3 eggs, whisked
  • ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350. In a large bowl combine the almond flour, salt and scallions. In a medium bowl whisk together the grapeseed oil and water. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until thoroughly combined. Press the dough into a 9 inch tart pan.
  2. Bake for 15-20minutes until golden brown Remove from the oven and let cool completely before filling.
  3. To make the filling, add Swiss Chard, red onion, and salt to a food processor and pulse until well blended. Transfer to a bowl and stir in eggs. Next combine the cheese.
  4. Pour the mixture into the crust and bake at 350 for 20 minutes, until browned around the edges and cooked through. Let the tart cool in the pan for 30 minutes, then serve.

Fundraiser for Grace's Lemonade Stand at

Whole Foods

 Wed, April 9

  Grace

Grace Bergin has the biggest heart of any 12 year old I know.  When she was just 7 years old, she was inspired by the story of Alex, a child with cancer, and her amazing lemonade stand.  Grace began hosting her own Lemonade stand each spring/summer and donated the proceeds to CT Children's Medical Center, Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.  That first year she raised $250.  Last year she raised $14,000 for a total of over $27,000 in five years!

This year Grace's goal is $25,000 and she needs our help on Wednesday!

Every year, Whole Foods donates organic lemonade for Grace's stands, but this year they are upping the ante and will be donating 5% of their net sales made at Whole Foods in Bishops Corner, West Hartford Center and Glastonbury on Wednesday, April 9.  If your grocery shopping plans include Whole Foods this week, please shop on Wednesday.

With the help of Fleet Feet Peeps like you, we have the potential to raise over $10,000 in one day - almost halfway to Grace's hefty goal.  Help us support this amazing young woman's efforts to make a difference!

Financial Organization and Estate Guidance:

"Creating Peace of Mind for You and Your Family"

Wed, April 9 @7pm

  Financial Spring Cleaning

It may seem odd that a running store is hosting a seminar on financial organization, but I feel that this topic is an important, especially if you have aging parents or children. The last thing you want to deal with when a loved one dies is the emotional and financial stress of figuring out finances (where bank and retirement accounts are, what insurance policies exist, where the will is located, etc).

I always thought it was a bit morbid when my Dad made me a mini-book detailing all of his and my mom's accounts and records, but now I understand how wise he was to create that for me. Every parent should do the same for their kids and adult "kids" should help their aging parents.

Our presenter, Gary Schwartz, JD, LLM, specializes in estate guidance and is an engaging speaker. He will present a ten-step system of organizing all important identification, asset records, tax information, insurance policies, legal documents, home maintenance and utility accounts. You will learn what items need to be assembled and how to eliminate clutter that can lead to confusion, wasted time and possibly lower legal and accounting fees by throwing out items that you do not need to be saving.

Do some financial "spring cleaning" this year - join us for this informative and free seminar!

It's time to show your girls some love and support - and not with one of those cheap over-the-head sports bras that smooshes instead of controlling and enhancing.

Track Workout

 Track workouts are back!

Cheers to the folks at Riverfront Recapture! They are giving us permission to host our "track workout" at Riverside Park (just north of downtown Hartford off I-91).

While the park doesn't have a traditional track, we love this area because of the diversity of workouts it can provide. There is a one-mile paved path for speedy intervals, 4.5 miles of shaded trail for gentle warm-ups/cool-downs and tempos, a grassy field for strides, drills & core work and a steep berm for hill repeats. It's the perfect "Urban Track"!

If you feel the need for speed or some spice to your weekly workouts, join Coach Brian at the park every Thursday at 6:30pm - meet at the Boathouse.

Workouts will be catered to both beginners and more experienced runners. Our goal is to help you get stronger and faster - no experience necessary! Best of all, the program is FREE!

Coach Brian will be sending out an email every Wednesday with details about the Urban Track Workout. To get on his mailing list, email him at

Racing Season Yoga

for Runners

If you have never engaged in any mobility work, NOW IS THE TIME.  Most of us are getting ready for our spring and summer races and have been picking up our training volume and intensity. This is when we start to feel an injury brewing.  Not bad enough to stop us.  Maybe it will feel like tightness or soreness.  Listen to your body. This is the time to address the issue.

Our yoga class is very interactive.  I typically design the class based on the issues that participants report just prior to class.  Mobility and range of motion are key.  If one small thing is off, it can lead to gait changes, and ultimately to injury.  Stop this before it happens.  Come and hang out with us for 1 hour, Sunday nights.

A yoga class for competitive people that can't easily touch their toes- THAT'S US! Come check our class out- Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p!

Summer Camp for Kids

Do your kids like sports of all sorts? Do they find it impossible to choose between soccer camp or basketball camp or lacrosse camp each summer? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you need to check out the 2-4-1 Sports Academy's "Life's 2 Short 4 Just 1 Sport" summer camp with programming designed for kids in grades 1-9.

Founded by Fleet Feet Peeps Steve & Kerry Boyle, the 2-4-1 Sports Academy utilizes the "crossover effect" to reduce burnout and injuries in young athletes and teach athletes to compete with character. Above all, they believe in making camp fun for the kids! NBC CT captured the essence of the 2-4-1 Sports Academy in a story they did last summer (click here  to view it).

This year, 2-4-1 is expanding to offer sessions for boys and girls in grades 1-9 at both Kingswood Oxford and Miss Porters (bus transportation from West Hartford is available!). If you - or someone you know - has active children that would benefit from and enjoy a great multisport camp, definitely check them out!
