Run Viking!

Iceland RunI'm a competitive person which makes being an aging runner a difficult thing. Some experts say that runners peak in their 30's. Others say that regardless of your age, we have about 10 years of running improvement if we put in the effort. Either way, I'm in trouble if I stick to my old standards about what a successful run entails.

I think that's why running with friends and on trails appeals to me more and more. It tricks my competitive psyche, yet still enables me to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running (i.e. I can justify eating a cupcake for breakfast). Plus, there is something special about running free. Running free from data. Running free from what the training schedule says. To not worry about how far or how fast I go. To just go.

Earlier this year, Nike invited their Run+ Community to describe their dream run for a chance to make that dream come true. Thousands of runners submitted their runs. Ten dream runs were selected. Then for one month this summer, runners worldwide ran and donated their kilometers to crown their favorite. The winner was Iceland. The dream run was nicknamed "RunViking".

Unbelievably, I was selected to join the team that would make RunViking a reality. The timing was perfect as I was beginning to lose my joy for running after a particularly tough summer of running (or slogging as I had come to call it). It had to be divine intervention since it turned out to be the gift I needed to rejuvenate my running.

Sometimes in order to build something back up, you need to first strip it down to its essence. That's what running in Iceland did for me. It broke running down to its raw core which enabled me to experience it sense by sense: first by sight, then touch, smell, sound and taste. It was an experience like no other. The trail and weather conditions were amongst the hardest I've ever run through, yet I completed each run feeling like a kid in a candy store - huge smile on my face, heart filled with joy and itching to go for another run.

Alternative Treatment for Plantar Fasciitis

Dr. Rode
Dr. Kurt Rode, of West Hartford Podiatry and the Podiatry Center of Eastern Connecticut , has contributed the article below on a new treatment option for plantar fasciitis. Dr. Rode is a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine and has served on the medical teams at both the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon.

As a runner myself, I know all too well the frustration not being able to run due to plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. There are a vast number of treatment options out there. Just search the internet and you'll find everything from home remedies to socks and surgery.  One of these treatments is Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment or EPAT.  It has sparked a lot of interest of late with some studies suggesting it may be equal to surgery.

EPAT EPAT is a low frequency sound pulse wave that causes microscopic biologic responses in the soft tissue that leads to tissue regeneration in acute or chronically injured tissues.  The origin of EPAT is set in treatments used to treat kidney stones. Later treatments of calcific tendonitis of the rotator cuff lead to and attempt at dissolving heel spurs in patients with heel pain. They did not find reduction in heel spur size, but did notice that the patients experienced pain relief.

The exact mechanism of how EPAT affects tendon healing is not fully understood. There is evidence to suggest that EPAT works because cells in the connective tissue have the ability to convert EPAT stimulus into biochemical signals that increase the release of growth factors and decrease inflammatory cells. More study is needed to understand the exact biologic effect EPAT has on tissues. All we know for certain is that in 86% of cases patients have lasting pain relief.

Click here to learn more and see if EPAT may be beneficial for you.

Andrew's Shoe Review - Saucony Guide 7

Andrew Judd

Saucony (pronounced like "sock-any") has long been known for their legendary Grid technology that provides a great cushioned feeling that is surprisingly light. A few years ago, Grid was enhanced and evolved into the ProGrid which brought more bounce and even less weight. Last year Saucony debuted PowerGrid into their high end running shoes.  As you can deduce, PowerGrid provides even more bounce and cushion for about the same weight. Today, I'm pleased to report that the PowerGrid technology has finally been introduced into Saucony's go-to stability shoe, the Guide 7.  Yeah!

Guide 7 With PowerGrid, the Guide 7 has that premium feel - plush and responsive - without the premium price tag.   In addition to the upgraded cushioning, Saucony dialed in the fit of the upper so the shoe follows your foot and upgraded the outsole in a big way.  They removed the triangle lug pattern that made the shoe feel a little on the stiffer side and replaced it with a new tread pattern that provides all the flexibility you might want out of your everyday trainer...with improved durability.

Guide 7 Outsole With that kind of flexibility, you might be wondering if the new Guide 7 is still as stable as its predecessor.  The answer is "yes!"  With "engineered Geometry" (see pic at left) Saucony has strategically placed pieces of the outsole in just the right spot to give it the stability it always had, without feeling stiff.  Early reviews has runners raving about it - so much that it has been nominated for Shoe of the Year by the Independent Running Retailers Association.

If you are looking for a cushioned, stable shoe that won't weigh you down even on your longest runs (men's is 10oz flat, and women's is 8.6oz) or get in the way of your stride, check out the new Saucony Guide 7.  I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by the feel of it!

Casey's Favs:

With the holidays right around the corner it's time to start writing those wish lists! Now that all of our fabulous winter apparel has arrived, there's a lot to choose from (one can never have too much running gear). But how to decide?? Here's a breakdown of some of the staff's favorite pieces in the store perfect for gift giving, stocking stuffing or just splurging on for yourself.

Runderpants Runderpants (women): These practical yet festive underpants are a great addition to any woman's running wardrobe. Not only are they fun, but they are made with moisture-wicking, super-stretchy, and ultra-comfortable fabric to keep you cool and dry. Available in a variety of colors and amusing sayings such as "Catch me if you can", "See you at the finish line", and "Get used to the view". I guarantee you'll get a smile when you give a pair!

Guys - we have great moisture-wicking and wind-blocking briefs and boxers for you too...but they only come in black (no fun sayings).

Nike Dri-Fit Knit Top Nike Dri-Fit Knit Long Sleeve (women): The secret of this top is in the stitching. The special circular knit pattern eliminates seams to create a super flattering and highly technical top. Specific climate control zones made up of variations in fabric density keep you warm or cool where needed, regulating body temperature while out on your run. The high-stretch knit material is soft, light and durable. It's the perfect top on its own or for layering whether you are out on a run, going to the grocery store or take Fido for a stroll.

Nike Aero Vest Nike Aeroloft 800 Vest (women): Who doesn't love a good vest during the winter? This brand new vest from Nike is an incredibly resilient yet chic piece to add to your running wardrobe this winter season. It is ultra-lightweight and packs into its own pocket that features an arm strap for hands-free carrying. The 800-fill goose down insulation keeps your core toasty warm - even on cold, windy runs as Steph found out when she wore it in Iceland.

Nike Element Jacket - Women Nike Element Shield Jacket & Pants (men and women): As the days get colder and colder, the chance of windy, snowy runs gets higher and higher. Instead of relegating yourself to the treadmill, face Old Man Nike Element Jacket & Pants - Men Winter head-on in these sweet pieces from Nike's Element Shield collection. Both the jacket and pants/tights feature Dri-FIT performance wicking fabric plus a Durable Water-Repellent (DWR) finish that provides you with serious protection from wind and snow without restricting your range of motion thanks to ergonomic seams that map your body's natural contours and provide a flattering fit (especially the women's jacket).

Garmin Forerunner 220 & 620 Review

Garmin 220 & 620

The long awaited release of the new Garmin GPS watches is upon us.  Expected to arrive at the store this week are the brand new Forerunner 220 & 620, both of which offer incredible updates to their predecessors which means lots of runners will be asking the questions, "Should I upgrade?" and "Which one should I get?"

Product Manager and ultra-runner, Brian, put together the following article to help you decide which watch is right for you.

Let's take a look at features offered by the mid-level Forerunner 220 which retails at $250 (without heart rate monitor) or $300 with heart rate.

  • Built in accelerometer for cadence and treadmill use
  • Fast GPS acquisition
  • Bluetooth Smart (BLE) for live tracking and data uploads
  • Vibrate, pace and heart rate alerts
  • Downloadable training plans
  • Programmable workouts & personal records

Both watches also offer 50m water-resistance and 10 hour GPS/active battery life (6 weeks in watch mode) which is an improvement over their predecessors.  The watches are available in black as well as a fun color (purple for the 220 and white with orange accents for the 620).

If you want a more basic GPS watch, check out the best-selling Garmin Forerunner 10 or the new TomTom Runner.  Both of these watches combine GPS capabilities with super user-friendly functions at a lower price.

Still don't know which one is best for you?  Come on in and ask one of our watch experts!   Happy Holiday running!

Featured Race:  Blue Back Square Mitten Run

Sun, Dec 8  @ 10am

This is one of our favorite races of the year thanks to a great course, awesome race organization and because it's the graduation race for our final No Boundaries Training Program of the year. The 5k race will be held rain, snow or shine (we're hoping for the shine)

The course begins near Town Hall and winds through the wide avenues of West Hartford, past festive shop windows and neighborhoods decorated for the season.  It finishes in the center of Blue Back Square in the open area between Cheesecake Factory and the library.

The race is expected to have nearly 2,000 runners so plan on leaving early for the race so you can find parking. If you like a little warm-up before your run, plan to park at Fleet Feet - then join us for some post-run treats after the race.

Registration fee for the 5k is $30 for adults, $25 for students aged 18-22 and $15 for kids under 18 years old pay just $15. There is also a FitKids fun run for kids - cost is $10.

The race also collects NEW mittens, gloves, hats and scarves that are donated to the less fortunate through the "Town That Cares Fund".  A collection box will be set-up at Fleet Feet Sports to drop off your donations - and boxes will be available on race day too.

Chipotle Turkey Posole

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N Play

Not a day goes by without seeing a recipe for something delicious to serve at your Thanksgiving table. Magazines, blogs, and Facebook posts offer images of something new to add to your holiday menu. What about the day after? What do you do with all that leftover turkey?

Sure, turkey sandwiches with mayo, cranberry sauce and stuffing are a Black Friday tradition in some households, but i you are willing to be a little more creative and veer towards this Mexican soup, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. With a small amount of effort you can turn the turkey carcass into a flavorful broth unlike any you'd encounter in the supermarket. Making your own stock is very easy and you can make it as you clean up from dinner.  Let it simmer on the stove for four hours while you visit with company.

In October, I published a recipe for Pork and Hominy Stew and encouraged readers to pick up an extra can of hominy for this recipe. Use the hominy to make this smoky, spicy posole. Posole is like "taco soup" because guests add the toppings that suit them, building their own unique bow. This recipe is larger than most of the recipes I share. It serves 12, so let your guests linger and gather again around the table to feed them this tasty soup.

Chipotle Turkey Posole

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 23 chopped chipotles in adobo sauce
  • 3 large cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 15 oz can diced tomatoes
  • Salt
  • 4-5 cups leftover cooked turkey meat, shredded
  • 2-3 14 oz cans of hominy, rinsed and drained
  • 4 quarts of turkey stock
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 Tbsp dried oregano
  • ⅛ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon

Toppings (select your favorites):

  • ½ head green cabbage, shredded
  • 2 avocados, chopped
  • 1 bunch radishes, sliced thin
  • 8 oz Cotija or feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 large bunch cilantro, chopped
  • 1 red onion, chopped
  • 2 limes, cut into wedges
  • tortilla chips

Directions:

1.  Heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until translucent, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the chipotle pepper and cook for another 3 minutes.

2.  Add the tomatoes and the turkey meat. Next add hominy, followed by the stock. Taste and add salt if needed. Add the bay leaves and remaining spices. Add more water if the soup is too thick for your preference. Bring to a simmer and allow it to simmer for 45 minutes.

3.  Arrange the toppings on a platter or in separate bowls and let people add the toppings they wish to the soup.

  Spring Marathon

Training Program

Begins Jan 18, 2014

Info Table: Dec 7 & 8

 SUGARLOAF MARATHON

MAINE

Building off the success of the Charlottesville spring marathon, Get Out N Play is launching another exciting destination marathon training program. In the winter of 2014, we begin training for the Sugarloaf Marathon in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

On May 18th 2014, this long running marathon kicks off its 32nd year, in the shadows of the popular ski mountain.  Despite the surrounding mountains, the Sugarloaf Marathon is widely known as a fast course with the final 16 miles having an elevation loss of 980 feet. The course has been ranked one of the 15 fastest marathons in the nation.

Participants arrive in town on Friday, May 16th and get settled into our rented house, where you'll be spending the next three nights. On Saturday, we'll spend the day preparing for the race with yoga, packet pickup, a course preview, along with some time to kick back and relax. During your stay, you'll get four home cooked meals. Sunday is your day to tackle 26.2 miles. After Monday's breakfast, we'll depart back home.

Training begins on Sunday, January 18th. To start, you should be able to run eight miles. We'll be training as a group with runs on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights.Throughout this program, you will have unlimited access to your knowledgeable coaches, Aubrey Schulz and Kurt Lindboom-Broberg.

If you are looking to get faster and/or learn about successfully running a marathon, this coaching program will surely move you in the right direction. A spring marathon is a perfect way to begin the 2014 season. After the holidays, you'll be ready to get into a training routine. Spend the chilly winter months training with a group and experience the camaraderie that comes along with it.  Arrive at the race well-prepared and injury- free with a huge foundation to surprise yourself and build confidence in your racing abilities. Make this marathon one for your record books!

Not quite ready for a marathon, but like the idea of training with a group? This race also features a 15K and we'll provide coaching and training for the shorter race too.

If you register before December 31st, package totals range from $325-$875, including 18 weeks of coaching along with options for lodging, meals, race entry, and a t-shirt. On January 1st, the package prices increase to $350- $905, so act now!

Visit the website to learn more or stop by the store on Dec 7 (10am-2pm) or Dec 8 (12-4pm) to meet Aubrey and Kurt.

Yoga for Runners

WHAT NOW?

Most athletes in our area are finishing up their racing season. Often, we are left with a feeling of  "What now?" You may need a break, but may be hesitant to do so because you are already thinking about 2013 races.  Or you just may be sick of running in general and need to do something else, but don't know what to do. I can relate to both of these!

Most importantly- always listen to your body! If you are feeling something wrong, or the beginnings of an injury, get it checked out.

Sometimes, it is our mind that needs a break. The monotony needs to be broken up. This is time to do something different. You can continue running, but take a few days a week to do yoga, cycle, swim, or whatever else you didn't have time for in the past few months. Have fun! Enjoy the season change. Check out a running group. You will NOT lose fitness by breaking from running and cross training.

It is important for our bodies to get balance as well. Engaging in activities that differ from your normal routine will help to strengthen and balance your body. When we are not racing we can push ourselves harder.

Bottom line, maintain some base mileage but mix it up. Enjoy yourself.  If you exercise in not fun, then you are doing it wrong.

If you're curious, come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p! Bring your skepticism! Talk to me! We are very informal. Let me know if you are a beginner, have any injuries, and where you are in your training cycle. Hope to see you on Sunday!!!
