Switch on Your Run

Reflective Runners For many morning runners, the end of Daylight Savings Time is like winning the sunshine lottery. First, you get a bonus hour of sleep (or running!) on that first Sunday. Second, the earlier sunrise time means that your run won't be in complete darkness - unless you are one of those hardcore runners who finish your run before 6am.

There is something special about starting a run in darkness and being part of the sunrise. I love the hushed tones of the world waking up and watching homes come alive as I run by. Even on the most routine of mornings, the sun rise is spectacular. Plan your route to have an unobstructed view of the horizon and experience one of my favorite "meteorological moments": the green flash in the sky the moments before the sun crests. In an instant, the sun's rays start speeding westward, lighting everything in its path. Day has begun.

As fun as it is to be a ninja and blend in with the darkness, it is wise to make sure that you can see...and that you can be seen. This means bringing along a light source (flashlight, headlamp or other run-specific lights) so you can see those bumps in the road/sidewalk and wearing reflective gear. Bright colors are helpful in low light conditions, but always make sure that your top and bottom have reflective taping or details. Even a small reflective element can produce a significant "flash" to get a driver's attention when their headlights shine on you.  Learn more in this video

A few years ago I shared my story about a state highway administration worker named Earl who gave me his XXL construction safety vest to keep me safe on my morning run. Not only was that vest huge, it was heavy and bulky, but I wore it religiously. As you can see in the staff's Gear Review below, reflective products have come a long way since then. In addition to gender-specific options and colors (Vizi Pink!), there is a huge variety of accessories that call attention to you, without being too unobtrusive or annoying to the wearer.

November is officially "National Running Safety Month". Running stores around the country have pledged to bring attention to the issue in an effort to reduce the number of pedestrians who are killed each year because drivers didn't see them. Don't become a statistic. Switch on your run or walk and be safe.  You too dog walkers!

Live Fit!

Steph

P.S. Join us at the store this Wednesday at 6:30pm for our "Switch on Your Run" Fun Run sponsored by Brooks. Deck yourself in the brightest, most reflective gear you have (the louder, the better) - glow-in-the-dark prizes will be awarded!

Stacy's Sports Medicine Corner

Run Faster, Jump More

Stacy Provencher

When we started our first Faster Than Ever 5k Training Program this Fall, I was tasked with creating a lower extremity workout to supplement the running workouts. The Faster 5k program is different than our other training programs as it challenges the participants to not only run the 3.1 miles, but to do it faster than they ever have before. Aside from running faster, what is so different about the way we train this group versus other groups? From a non-running aspect, explosive lower extremity training is what is going to help improve 5k running time.

Keep Calm & Run Faster Explosive training, also known as plyometrics, are exercises that require the muscle to generate force as quickly as possible. The muscle quickly goes from a stretch to a contraction. For example, hopping up and down requires the calf muscle to generate an explosive contraction to spring us up off of the ground, a stretch as we land and lower our heel to the ground, then another quick contraction to jump again.

Performing plyometric exercises that resemble similar motions of the running gait cycle can be especially beneficial. Drills like bounding, hopping, and skipping are examples of drills that can be performed to supplement running workouts.

It has been shown that implementing explosive exercise into your routine just twice a week can improve 5k time without any increase in VO2max.  Click here to discover Stacy's go-to drill to improve explosive running power.

Andrew's Shoe Review - Brooks Adrenaline 14

Andrew Judd

If you have been into running in the past decade, chances are that you have seen, or probably run in the Brooks Adrenaline, as it has been one of the top running shoes for 14 years, now. The Adrenaline has always been a very stable shoe, with a traditional board last (yes, like a wooden board), and the Diagonal Progression Roll Bar (DPRB), and an upper that feels like a glove on those feet that need stability. Since this shoe always works so well, Brooks leaves this shoe with minimal updates every year, so they don't risk the integrity of the shoe...until now.

Brooks Adrenaline The Adrenaline finally got the fun little bells and whistles the other Brooks shoes have developed over the past few years, starting with the Caterpillar Heel. This is a heel that is segmented along the length of the lateral side of the shoe, incrementally letting the foot drop, creating a softer impact, and reducing the amount of over-pronation that takes place.

Adrenaline OutsoleBecause of this addition, the torsional shank in the mid-section of the shoe can be reduced, making this shoe lighter, and much more flexible without sacrificing stability. If you are currently a fan of the Adrenaline feel, not to worry! The board last is still there, so it feels very similar underfoot, and has the same basic shape to it.

The next big change is the upper. Brooks took the basic design and material from the Adrenaline's big brother, the Trance. This gives the inside a much softer feel, as if your foot is strapped into a pillow, while still making sure your foot stays in place inside the shoe.

The Brooks Adrenaline is still the same supportive, stable shoe it always has been, but in a much needed, updated package. It feels friendlier, and looks cleaner, assuring everyone that the Adrenaline isn't falling to the wayside of this wave of shoe technology over the past couple of years.

BONUS! The Adrenaline also comes in a GoreTex package specially made for conditions that we will surely be getting this winter. Come in and try them out before you convince yourself it's too cold to run!

Staff Favorites:

Vizi Jackets Reflective Jackets & Zips: Runners make looking like a highlighter, cool - especially in these tops by Brooks & Saucony. Both brands offer jackets with strategic retro-reflectivity, handy features and bright colors that make them perfect for the low-light hours (dawn, dusk and cloudy days). Brooks' jackets offer high-contrast color-combinations that make the bright colors pop even more while Saucony's jackets have build in LED lights. Both are designed for performance, yet makes being safe, stylish!

Amphipod Xinglet Amphipod's Xinglet's: Don't like those unshapely mesh safety vests? Try one of Amphipod's Xinglets - a classy update to the crossing guard sash from your Safety Patrol days. The ultra-lightweight, fully adjustable Xinglets are ideal for those who want a minimalist feel, but maximum visibility. The Xinglet is available in three styles: regular, easy-access zippered pocket (large enough for your Android phone) and LED. The LED version features dual strobe reflective LED zones on the front and back along with 360 degrees of reflectivity (that's 40% more than most vests).

Reflective Band Reflective Arm and Leg Bands: You need these bands. Why? They provide high-contrast color and 3M Scotchlite retro-reflective detail - giving you extra visibility. The soft elastic provides just the right amount of tension, so they are comfortable even when worn against the skin, but can stretch to fit over your jacket and pants.

LightBender LED

LightBender LED: Brighten-up your running wardrobe with this fun light that is both safe and stylish. The LightBender LED is a lightweight, water (and sweat!) resistant band that can be bent to wrap around your arm or leg. The powerful LED lights can be seen up to 2,400 feet away and can be set to steady or flashing; it's like a little light-up dance party!  Plus, the easily replaceable watch battery is good for about 100 hours of light. Brilliant!

Firefly LightsFirefly Supernova: This little fella will surprise you with its powerful light in such a tiny package. We think it is the lightest and brightest light in its class as it can be seen up to a mile away. We love how durable the light is too! You can set the light to "flashing" or "steady" mode depending on your needs, and thanks to the plastic clip, you can attach it to your belt, waistband, bike seat or even your dog's collar.

Light Your Way

Lights: Brighten your way by carrying your own light source. Not only will you increase your chance of being seen, but you can see those bumps in the road before they trip you up. Choose from headlamps, cap lights, knuckle lights or the ultimate light source, GoMotion's light pack. All are "runner-friendly" and feature replaceable batteries to keep the lights on for seasons to come. Not sure which one is right for you? Ask us!

Sports Bra Care Tips

From Moving Comfort

Sports Bra Care Tips

Wash it gently.Hand washing is ideal, but not always possible. If you machine wash, use the gentle or delicate cycle and be sure to fasten any hooks or straps to avoid snags. Even better, place your sports bras into a lingerie wash bag.

Let it hang. After washing, reshape any molding and hang to air dry. Dryer heat can really take a toll on the fabric. If you must, tumble dry low.

Give it a break. Spread the workout love between three styles at minimum. That allows one bra to be in the wash, one hanging to dry, and a third ready to go. Bonus: three different styles should cover your needs for a wide range of workouts-from a bendy yoga class to a longer-distance run.

Do not soften. Fabric softeners and dryer sheets can clog up the fabric and shorten the life of your bra by limiting its ability to wick sweat and resist odors. For best results, use a gentle, lingerie-friendly detergent like WIN (available at Fleet Feet).

Let it go. Depending on how much it's worn, a sports bra needs to be replaced every 6-12 months. Pay attention to the signals-stretched bottom band and straps, faded tags, possible chafing spots, and a less-than-fresh scent. Appreciate what it has done for you, say your goodbyes, and get fitted for a new style to keep you moving without skipping a beat.

Lentil & Linguine Soup

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N Play

Lentils, the tiny versatile legume, deserve a prominent place in your kitchen. This quick cooking legume is a very good source of cholesterol lowering fiber. Their high fiber content also prevents blood sugar levels from rising rapidly, making it a good food for those monitoring their blood sugar. In a one cup serving, there are 15 grams of fiber. One study showed that those who ate a high fiber diet, with more than 21 grams daily, had a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Lentils are also a good source of protein and iron.

There are several types of lentils to choose from. The most common types in the US are the green and brown varieties. Red, yellow, orange, and black lentils also exist. Just be mindful when cooking, because some varieties lose their shape and become mushy when cooked. The green and brown ones retain their shape the best. Check your recipe, but most lentils cook in about 20-30 minutes, without needing to be soaked prior to use.

Lentil and Linguine Soup

Ingredients:

  • Olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 carrots, chopped
  • 1 cup lentils
  • 10 cups water
  • 2 tsps sea salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • pinch red pepper flakes
  • pound linguine, broken 1 inch pieces
  • fresh ground black pepper
  • cup fresh parsley
  • cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, heat oil over moderate heat. Add the onion and saut for 58 until translucent. Add the garlic, cooking for 1 minute. Then add carrots, stirring occasionally, until they soften about 10 minutes.
  2. Add the lentils, water, salt, bay leaf and red pepper flakes to the pot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, partially covered, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.
  3. Add the linguine and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are tender and the pasta is done, 15 to 20 minutes longer.
  4. Stir the black pepper and parsley into the soup. Top each serving with some Parmesan cheese.

  Spring Marathon

Training Program

Begins Jan 18, 2014

Info Table: Dec 7 & 8

 SUGARLOAF MARATHON

MAINE

Building off the success of the Charlottesville spring marathon, Get Out N Play is launching another exciting destination marathon training program. In the winter of 2014, we begin training for the Sugarloaf Marathon in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

On May 18th 2014, this long running marathon kicks off its 32nd year, in the shadows of the popular ski mountain.  Despite the surrounding mountains, the Sugarloaf Marathon is widely known as a fast course with the final 16 miles having an elevation loss of 980 feet. The course has been ranked one of the 15 fastest marathons in the nation.

Participants arrive in town on Friday, May 16th and get settled into our rented house, where you'll be spending the next three nights. On Saturday, we'll spend the day preparing for the race with yoga, packet pickup, a course preview, along with some time to kick back and relax. During your stay, you'll get four home cooked meals. Sunday is your day to tackle 26.2 miles. After Monday's breakfast, we'll depart back home.

Training begins on Sunday, January 18th. To start, you should be able to run eight miles. We'll be training as a group with runs on Sunday mornings and Tuesday nights.Throughout this program, you will have unlimited access to your knowledgeable coaches, Aubrey Schulz and Kurt Lindboom-Broberg.

If you are looking to get faster and/or learn about successfully running a marathon, this coaching program will surely move you in the right direction. A spring marathon is a perfect way to begin the 2014 season. After the holidays, you'll be ready to get into a training routine. Spend the chilly winter months training with a group and experience the camaraderie that comes along with it.  Arrive at the race well-prepared and injury- free with a huge foundation to surprise yourself and build confidence in your racing abilities. Make this marathon one for your record books!

Not quite ready for a marathon, but like the idea of training with a group? This race also features a 15K and we'll provide coaching and training for the shorter race too.

If you register before December 31st, package totals range from $325-$875, including 18 weeks of coaching along with options for lodging, meals, race entry, and a t-shirt. On January 1st, the package prices increase to $350- $905, so act now!

Visit the website to learn more or stop by the store on Dec 7 (10am-2pm) or Dec 8 (12-4pm) to meet Aubrey and Kurt.
