One by One; Together We Can Make Things Happen
   --3HELPERS

Many times in my life I have been humbled by the grace, fortitude and extraordinary kindness people exhibit. Sometimes it is as innocuous as someone giving up their seat on a crowded bus, carrying an elderly woman's groceries to her car or telling me that I forgot to charge them for an item.

Sometimes it is much deeper: runners forgoing their PR to help a struggling runner, a double amputee finishing a grueling Spartan race, the Nebraska football team letting a 7-year old with brain cancer score a touchdown, a patron leaving a gigantic tip for a waitress or a terminally ill person raising money for a cure they know will occur after they've died. It's all the more inspiring when it is a kid who freely decides to give their allowance, time and talents to make a difference.

Earlier this year I was honored to provide space for 12 year old Grace Bergin's Lemonade Stand which raises money for the Oncology Department at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Grace does nearly everything herself from writing grants to purchase organic lemonade and cups to marketing and promotion to giving up her free time on the weekends to staff the stand. In five years, Grace has raised over $25,000 (including $14,000 last year). Amazing!

Several weeks ago I was inspired again by three sisters, aged 11, 9 and 7, who are doing their part to help others. They've nicknamed themselves the 3 HELPERS and their first project is to help the track and field team at the New Providence Primary School in Kingston, Jamaica (their father's homeland). They were inspired to help when they saw photos of the kids running in bare feet on a hard, dusty track and learned how the coach, Keith Wright, often funds the needs of the program out of his own pockets.

Before their family trip to Jamaica this summer, they collected over 70 pairs gently-used running shoes, packed them in their suitcases, and presented them (along with much-needed vitamins) to Coach Keith at the school. The excitement and smiles that ensued were instant proof of the tremendous good their efforts created. They got to meet - and run - with the kids and discovered some of the Jamaican kids were extremely talented (think Usain Bolt as a kid). Even without shoes, they were winning track meets.

The girls decided that their good deed couldn't end there. They realized that for some of these kids, being successful in track could be their ticket to college and a good job in the future. So they have decided to expand their drive to donate track spikes to all 70 of the runners on the NPPS Track Team. They are reaching out to local schools and running clubs seeking donations of gently-used spikes (track or cross country) and will be hosting a fundraising drive at Fleet Feet Sports on Saturday, October 19 from 10am-Noon.

Everyone who donates a pair of spikes or $20 will get to put their name and a message of love & speed on a paper shoe made by the girls that will be displayed in our store window. Fleet Feet Sports will turn each $20 donation into a brand new pair of spikes. If more than seventy $20 donations are made, the girls will use the extra money to defray shipping costs and purchase more vitamins for the runners. Once the spikes are ready to be shipped, we will take down the paper shoes from the window and tuck one in each pair of spikes. It'll be a Thanksgiving to remember in Jamaica!

Please help spread the word about this fantastic initiative and join us in supporting the 3HELPERS. I like to believe that good running karma will come from it!

The Reverse Taper: Marathon Recovery

Stacy Provencher

Tis the season for marathons and half marathons, with this weekend being a biggie (Hartford & Chicago!). After taking time to celebrate your accomplishment of not only finishing the race, but the dedication and months of training you have put in, your efforts should quickly turn to recovery. Recovery starts as soon as you cross the finish line. In this article, you will learn some simple tricks to include in your post-race routine to help you to recover quicker.

The last couple of weeks leading up to your marathon you were tapering, or going easier with your workouts and incorporating more rest into your routine. Post- marathon, you should reverse taper, and go easy for a couple of weeks after your race. Half marathons do not stress the body as much as a full, but you still need some time to recover.

The body undergoes some serious stress, not only during your race, but in the months leading up to it. It needs time to recover properly to avoid overtraining, injury, and decreased performance. Below are three key areas of damage that occur to the body during a marathon:

  • The muscles of the legs become broken down and inflamed. It takes time for this inflammation to go away and for the muscles to return to their normal state.
  • The glycogen stores of the muscles are depleted. This typically occurs around mile 20, when some people "hit the wall." The muscles need to be properly refueled (more to come on this).
  • Cellular levels of creatine kinase (CK), which is a marker of muscle breakdown, increase. This elevated level of CK in the blood can be present for as many as 3 - 7 days post-race, regardless of your level of muscle soreness. So, even if you think your muscles are fine, they're not, they need rest!

Now that we see what actually happens to the body, we can better understand what we need to do to help it. Click here to learn five key strategies to help recover fast!

To help speed your recovery, we have teamed up with Select Physical Therapy and Therapeutic Bodyworks to host our annual post- marathon Recovery Clinic on Sunday, October 13 (see side bar for more info).

Andrew's Shoe Review - Nike Structure 17

Andrew Judd

Stability shoes have undergone quite a bit of change and innovation over the last few years. It used to be that giving a shoe "stability", meant that it had a "medial post" made of denser material (usually colored grey) along the arch-side of your shoe that stopped your arches from collapsing too much (i.e. over-pronating).

The downside to this post technology was that it was heavy and stiff, not to mention it provided a specific amount of stability which limited the number of people that it would be ideal for. As a workaround, shoe companies would make two or three different levels of stability shoes - though that made it hard for most people to select the shoe that was right for them.

Nike Structure - MenEnter, the Nike Structure. Last year they introduced a new type of stability called "dynamic support". It still is comprised of soft and dense foam, but both foams now run the length of the shoe. The softer foam actually rests on top of the dense foam at an angle which takes advantage of gravity to slow pronation. This not only creates a much lighter and more flexible shoe, but the dynamic nature of how the support works, means that the shoe is appropriate for those who need a little stability to those who need a lot - i.e. more people can wear the shoe and have optimum pronation control.

Nike Structure - WomenThis year's Structure 17 which debuts this month builds upon the success of its predecessor. Nike re-designed the upper to incorporate their awesome "engineered mesh" and a two-layer mid-foot wrap. These features allow the shoe to hug your foot better, reduce buckling in the forefoot, lighten the shoe and remove seams that can potentially rub your foot the wrong way...not to mention create some fantastic color combinations!

Nike also updated the midsole to include additional and deeper flex grooves that amps the shoe's flexibility. The rubber outsole was also modified so that it is more durable and can give you a little extra wear time as you pound out your miles!

Overall, I think the new Structure 17 is a very solid update that won't disappoint.

Staff Favorites: Race Day Picks

The weather is looking really good for Saturday's tour de Harford - a little chilly in the morning with partly cloudy skies and a high in the mid-to-upper 60's. Don't let the crisp morning fool you into over-dressing or you'll be roasting and uncomfortable by mid-race. You will also want to focus on replenishing your electrolyte and salt stores since the warm/humid-esque weather can cause premature cramping and fatigue.

An old "Runner's Rule" says to dress as if it's 20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature. Therefore when planning your outfit, plan to feel like it is near 80 degrees outside which, for many people, means shorts and either a singlet or short-sleeves. If you don't like being cold at the start, don a pair of arm warmers (either official ones or hand-crafted ones made by cutting off the toes in a tube sock). They keep your arms and hands warm (but your armpits cool!) and can be easily scrunched down to wristbands when you get too warm or stuffed in the waistband of your shorts.

Don't want to waste energy shivering as you wait for the start of the race. Plan on wearing an old pair of sweats that you can toss off right before the start (items are then collected and donated to charity). If you have fans that will be cheering you on, you can always toss your warmer outer layers to them when you see them. If you are worried you might get cold mid-race, have them bring along a long-sleeve tee for you.

Body Glide: Whatever the conditions, Body Glide can prevent chaffing and blisters. Use it anywhere that you anticipate irritation... it can save you some serious pain. Trust us. Stop by our booth to get a nifty tube of "Baby Body Glide" for $1.50 - it's small enough to fit into the key pocket of your shorts in case of emergency during the race.

Nip Guards: Men can avoid discomfort and embarrassing race photos by using these comfortable, specially-designed adhesive pads on their chest. The bonus over regular band-aids is that they also come off painlessly after the run. We will be offering a special two-pack for $2 at our booth.

KT Tape: Great for pre-marathon or during your run, KT Tape also works well for recovery because it helps to increase blood flow and decrease inflammation. Stop by the Select Physical Therapy booth at the expo to get your sore-spot(s) taped FREE!

Compression Sleeves/Socks: There is a reason why many Olympic athletes from sprinters to marathoners wear compression - it increases oxygen flow to your muscles which acts like super-fuel for your muscles. They also provide shin and calf support which is really nice around Mile 19. Go with the sleeves if you are particular about your sock. Save 20% on all Zensah compression sleeves and socks at our Expo Booth!

Pace Bands: Stay on pace during your race with these lightweight, reusable silicone wristbands that feature the splits you need to hit to achieve your target time. So much better than tattoos and flimsy paper bands that disintegrate when they get wet from sweat and water stops. Normally $9, they will be on sale for $7 at our expo booth.

Throwaway Gloves: A pair of $3 "Magic Stretch" gloves will keep your hands warm at the start and can be tossed at a water stop when you warm up. Get yours at our booth (choose from standard colors, neon and Halloween!).

Nutrition: Carry whatever nutrition you prefer - Gu, Sport Beans, Clif Shot Blocks, Chomps, Swedish Fish... This way you can time your nutrition to your needs, not the race's nutrition stops which can be easy to miss or worse, will give you the flavor you despise! See the next item for the best way to carry said nutrition.

Flip Belt: Such an ingenious product! It looks like a waistband, but thanks to some strategically placed slits, it will carry your phone, keys, nutrition - even a small camera. Pin your race number directly to it to keep your number visible no matter how many layers you have on (or take off) which is important because your official race photo is tagged with your bib number for quick look-up.

Head Cover: Nothing can sting more than salty sweat dripping into your eyes. Prevent this by wearing a running hat, Sweaty Band or Bondi Band. An added benefit of a hat is that your eyes can relax instead of squint which saps valuable energy from your body. Pick a bright color or fun design so your friends can find you in the crowd more easily.

At Our Booth:

In addition to offering most of the above items at our marathon expo booths, we will also be selling Hoka One One shoes (ridiculously cushioned shoes), Timex watches and heart rate monitors (regular and GPS), Feetures! Socks (buy 3, get 1 free), Addaday massage rollers, "Run Hartford" engraved HydraFlask water bottles (includes a free tube of Nuun!) and a great selection of performance apparel from Brooks at 25% off + a free screen (choice of screens including "Run Hartford", 26.2, 13.1, 5k and some other fun slogans).

Not running? Stop by the expo any way (Thursday and Friday at the XL Center from 11am-7pm) and take advantage of these great specials!

Marathon Medal Engraving

We will once again be a drop-off point for Swahn Engraving's marathon (& half marathon) medal engraving service.  For just $10, you can get your name and finish time engraved on the back of your medal.

We will offer medal collection through Sunday, October 22.  You must pay via cash or check (made out to Swahn Engraving) - NO credit cards accepted.  Turn-around time is 7-10 days.

Did you run a different marathon, but still want your medal engraved?  No problem!  Swahn will engrave any medal as long as it has space on the back.

Yoga for Runners - Sunday's at 5:30pm

For competitive people who can't touch their toes

              $15/class - Multi-Class Cards Available

Yoga for Runners Yoga to Complement Your Training

If you have been to our Yoga Class at Fleet Feet, you will notice how informal and relaxed we are. We joke, ask questions, and chat. We are genuinely taking it easy. Assuming that you are just finishing or close to finishing your Peak or Race Training Period, any exercises that you are doing should complement your running, tapering, and racing. This is NOT the time to take on aggressive stretching. This is the time for recovery! And of course, we will always bring in a bit or strength work.

What are we going to do when our Peak Period has ended? This is when we go back to the beginning and focus on our Base Training. The longer slower miles and low intensity running allow room for stronger training. We will begin to raise the heart rate in our practice, core work will become more challenging, and we will further increase flexibility and range of motion.

Remember, the intensity of your yoga practice, or any other training that complements your running, should be in inverse proportion to the intensity of your current running. In the low intensity of the Base Building Cycle of your training you can benefit from a stronger yoga practice that includes a stronger flow through the strength building poses. The heat of a stronger yoga practice during your Base Cycle will complement your work for aerobic gains and also develop muscles, tendons and ligaments by promoting full range of motion. At the same time, you will build your core strength and promote balance.

If you're curious, come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p! Bring your skeptism! Talk to me! We are very informal. Let me know if you are a beginner, have any injuries, and where you are in your training cycle. Hope to see you on Sunday!!!

Skillet Lasagna

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N PlayAre you racing this Saturday in Hartford? Here is an easy recipe for the pasta lover, perfect for your prerace meal. All of the elements of a hearty lasagna are combined into a single skillet. It's a more creative alternative to the common spaghetti and meatballs. The presence of cream cheese might surprise you instead of the more traditional mozzarella. The slowly melting cream cheese has a smooth, desirable texture. Here's hoping this meal helps you run fast in Saturday's race. Good luck!

Skillet Lasagna

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • ½ tsp each: marjoram, parsley, oregano, red pepper flakes
  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 2 28 oz cans tomatoes (diced, crushed or whole)
  • Olive oil
  • 1 bunch basil
  • 10-12 lasagna noodles, broken into 12" chunks
  • 8 oz block of cream cheese, cut into ½-1" pieces
  • 2 oz Parmesan cheese, grated
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. In a 12" or larger skillet over medium heat, warm 1 Tbsp olive oil. Add onion and saute for 45 min, until slightly soft. Add garlic, herbs, red pepper flakes and saute for 1 more minute. Add sausage and cook, stirring until no longer pink, about 45 minutes
  2. Add one can of tomatoes. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Stir in 1 Tbsp olive oil and basil. Scatter broken lasagna noodles on top of sausage and sauce and pour remaining can of tomatoes over the top. Cover and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat and keep simmering stirring occasionally until the pasta is al dente, about 20 minutes.
  3. Stir in half of the Parmesan cheese and dot lasagna with cream cheese. Cover, turn off heat and allow to steam for about 5 minutes.
  4. Top with remaining Parmesan cheese and a little more fresh basil and serve.
