Where Does Your Run Take You?

Running Has Taught MeA favorite visitors to the store is one of Australia's finest distances runners, Barrie Almond. I love hearing Barrie recount stories from his glory days running with some of the sport's legends, as well as getting his advice on training, racing and everything in between.

The other day Barrie sent me a poem written by another Aussie runner/coach named Paul Ford - an amazing runner in his own right who has run over 515,000 miles in 32 years and has been a professional running coach for 25 years (check our his great blog here).  The poem put into words one of the reasons I love running: 'Tis not where you go to run, yet where the run takes you.

Running is a universal sport. No matter the town, state or country you live in, runners are the same. We have our own language. Anyone that has run a race with an international field can attest that no words need to be exchanged when you run stride-for-stride, hit the Wall or cross the finish line with a fellow runner. After reading the poem, I found it neat that even on the other side of the world, runners run for the same reasons we do - to be taken somewhere where our mind, body or sole needs to be at that moment.

Running is a transformational journey. As Paul writes, "running opens up the world of possibility, and windows of opportunity. It can teach you many things.  And, when you're open to running's lessons, you will learn many things." Remember this as you dig deep to finish your training and race as a proud member of the Running Community.

'Tis Not Where You Go To Run, Yet Where the Run Takes You

By Paul Ford

It takes me to the middle,
It takes me to the edge;
It takes me places,
Only running can pledge.

It takes me here,
And takes me there,
It takes me many places;
Over here, over there.

It closes doors,
Opens some too;
It leaves some ajar,
As only running can do.

It takes me here,
And takes me there;
It takes me new & old places,
It takes me wherever I dare.

It takes me places past and lost,
Places where I reconnect;
Places I've been,
And places I've dreamt;
And those unthought of yet.

It takes me here,
And takes me there;
It takes me home,
And everywhere.

It takes me up,
And brings me down;
It brings me closer,
And sometimes far,
Out of town and all-around.

It takes me here,
And takes me there;
Places curious and curiouser,
Heart, legs and mind working;
And places to share.

It takes me places,
I wish to never end;
It takes me places,
Known and shared,
Mysterious, magic and mythic,
The run - a friend.

Taper Time

Stacy Provencher

As we approach marathon and half marathon season, we have to deal with the inevitable taper that comes along with training. Depending on your training program, you will either have a two or three week period of tapering, or cutting back on mileage and intensity of training.

At first, this sounds great. No more early wake ups to get those long miles in and weekend afternoons can now be used to do everything that you have been putting off since you started training. Then your mind takes over, and you start thinking, what if I haven't trained enough, what should I eat, will my knee heal in time for the race, etc?

Taper TimeThe taper is an important time to let your body heal and rest from all of the stresses that you have placed on it during training. Other than just cutting back on your mileage, that are a few important things that you can do during this time to get the most benefit of your taper and rock your race.

Click here to learn my favorite taper strategies including how to take care of your injuries, when to get a massage, use compression and moist heat, replace your shoes, eating and drinking, not doing anything crazy and how to not let your mind get the best of you. As the current issue of Competitor magazine says, "embrace the suck!"

Andrew's Shoe Review - Asics GT 2000 2

Andrew Judd

This week I am reviewing one of the Top 5 best-selling shoes in the US for the past decade. The Asics GT 2000 series shoe is a classic, and I imagine a good number of you reading this have worn and/or are wearing this shoe. It is known for its balanced mix of cushioning and stability and an upper that hugs your foot in all the right places, all for a reasonable price. Because of its heritage as a best-seller, Asics kept the changes to it minimal...until now.

Asics decided it was time to apply the technological advances they had success with in their high-end shoes, namely Fluid Ride. Traditionally, the GT 2000 series featured a three-layer mid-sole that included a thick layer of firm foam near the ground to reduce shock from pounding of the road, followed by a layer of Ascis' proprietary Gel that was sandwiched by a third layer of softer EVA foam. Together, this combination gave your foot the feeling that it was running on a plush cloud.

Asics 2000 2 - WomensThe new GT 2000 2, features Fluid Ride which is different in that it incorporates a rubber compound into that top (much softer) layer of foam, giving it the ability to sink more, and yet, respond better. It's a superior feeling cushion in a package that is far lighter than comparable cushion shoes. The 2000 2 also has improved flexibility thanks to deeper flex grooves on both the outsole and in the top layer of that foam to ensure that your forefoot moves the way it likes to!

Asics 2000 2 - MenThe GT 2000 2 officially releases on October 1 but we have a limited supply on hand right now - including a limited-edition design that raises money and awareness for Prostate Cancer (both the men and women's versions have furry mustache tongues!). Be sure to ask for this model when you come in.

Still like the original 2000? We still have many sizes available for both men and women...and have discounted the shoe by $20!  Give us a call at 860-233-8077 to have us check availability and reserve one for you.

Superfeet CARBONStacy - Superfeet CARBON: Not all insoles are created equally. After years of research, Superfeet, the insole company we have come to know and trust, has released their newest innovative product; CARBON.

CARBON provides the same great support as Superfeet's other insoles, but its lightweight, low profile design make it the perfect combination for those seeking a high performance insole for tight-fitting athletic footwear and boots, as well as lower profile shoes. The stabilizing cap on this insole utilizes a new material called EVOlyte, which combines polymer and carbon fiber to allow the insole to be extremely strong, but very thin and springy all at the same time. The antimicrobial foam even comes pre-beveled for a better fit!

Addaday JuniorChaz - Addaday Junior: Last issue Shiloh introduced you to the awesome new massage stick roller from Addaday which is great for your back, quads, hamstrings and calves. This week, I want to tell you about the new "Junior" model that is a must have for plantar fasciitis, runners knee and any sore muscle you can pinpoint. The Junior features a single gear (simulates a human elbow) with deep grooves that know just how to work out any nagging knots or sore muscles. The gear spins over a flat base so it stays put as you roll over it or can be used to easily grasp with your hands. Its small size is perfect for your race bag or suitcase so you can keep those muscles pliable wherever you go!

Yoga for Runners - Sunday's at 5:30pm

For competitive people who can't touch their toes

              $15/class - Multi-Class Cards Available

Yoga for Runners Yoga for Mental Strength

Holding challenging poses will strengthen your mental fortitude. Learning to use your breath to relax will hold you firm, and help you to endure the immediate physical and emotional challenges. When you take yourself out of your "comfort zone" and hold a challenging yoga pose, you will actually learn how to endure. Learning to relax while facing discomfort will promote better performance and a more efficient recovery.

Yoga will also teach you balance. It will teach you balance by engaging you in balance poses. You will also learn the value of being in the moment. How do you deal with hitting a wall? What motivation do you tap into when you lace up while it's still dark outside or when the temperatures are not favorable? Why do you do what you do when you just don't feel like you can? Being in different yoga postures, whether you are standing, sitting, or upside-down will bring these answers to you.

Most of the injuries that athletes experience are from the repetitive motions that are typical of endurance sports. Even a slight imbalance can pull the body out of alignment. The subsequent "pounding" that our bodies experience can lead to inflammation and damage to the ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Engaging in a regular yoga practice designed for athletes will help you develop symmetrical body alignment, and it will correct any physical imbalances that may be developing. Also, yoga will allow you to develop a more holistic view of your body, meaning you will begin to feel and intuitively know when you are out of alignment.

If you're curious, come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p! Bring your skeptism! Talk to me! We are very informal. Let me know if you are a beginner, have any injuries, and where you are in your training cycle. Hope to see you on Sunday!!!

Chipolte Salsa Baked Chicken

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N PlayCongrats to Aubrey and her husband Ken on the birth of their son, Kai. Baby Kai sure to have lots of good eats in his future!

Schedules often get busy in the fall and getting dinner on the table can be a struggle. Here's a quick, flavorful baked chicken recipe that comes together with very little effort. As you look over the recipe, you might wonder, why take the time to make a salsa when I can just open a jar? True, but the smoky flavors of the chipotle shine through and boost the flavors better than any jar of salsa I've ever had.

It doesn't take long to cut up an onion, garlic and cilantro. Precision isn't important; you are just preparing the veggies for the blender to do its job. After a quick whirl, the salsa is prepared and the chicken is ready for the oven. While the chicken is cooking, you can attend to other things; like laundry, homework or foam rolling those tight runner's muscles.

Chipotle Salsa Baked Chicken

Ingredients:

  • 1 15oz can fire roasted tomatoes (or canned whole or crushed tomatoes if fire roasted are not available)
  • 1/4 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, packed and chopped
  • 2 chipotle chili peppers in adobo, plus 1 teaspoon adobo sauce (less or more to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs), cut into 3 inch wide pieces
  • 4 oz Monterey jack cheese, grated or sliced

Optional Toppings:

  • Avocados
  • More chopped cilantro
  • Sour cream
  • Corn or flour tortillas
  • Rice

Directions:

  1. Place the tomatoes, onion, garlic, cilantro, chili peppers, adobo sauce, lime juice and salt in a blender. Blend until smooth, with a few chunks remaining.
  2. Preheat the oven to 350. Place the chicken in a baking dish in a single layer (about an 8x10 pan). Spread the salsa over the front and back of the chicken.
  3. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes (30 min for thighs). Remove the foil, cover with a layer of cheese and bake uncovered for 10 more minutes.
  4. Serve with rice or tortillas. Garnish with toppings of your choice.

Sports Bra Fit Fest
Thurs, Sept 26 - All Day!
Moving Comfort Fit Fest
Fall races are here, and it might be time to replace that favorite sports bra you've worn for way too long! Remember, the 2nd most important piece of equipment for a female runner is her sports bra!

Did you know...
  • 8 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong size sports bra.

  • The average life of a sports bra is 6-12 months. Bras that are dried in the dryer last even less time!
  • A woman should be re-measured for a sports bra every year, after major weight gain/loss or pregnancy.
  • We carry sizes A-H! Our bra fit process will help you determine which bra is right for you.
Not all sports bras are created equal. It's time to show your girls some love and support- and not with one of those cheap over-the-head sports bras that smooshes instead of controlling and enhancing!

Join us this Thursday, September 26th for a special sale of all in-stock sports bras. We'll offer bra fitting appointments all day with our Fleet Feet FIT Experts so you can get the one-on-one attention you deserve!

Save 10% on one bra or 20% on two or more bras - plus, you will receive $5 in Fleet Feet Bucks for each bra bought that can be used towards any apparel purchase that day (e.g. buy three bras, get $15 off that cute top you've been eying.)

Plus, BYOB (Bring Your Old Bra) to receive a free gift and help us create a unique window display for Women's Health Month this October!

Email Caitlin at events@fleetfeethartford.com or call the store at 860-233-8077 to make your professional sports bra fitting appointment.
