Be The Movement

THE EXTRA MILE

Issue #137

 September 10, 2013

Y.O.L.O.

nullThe topic on a recent NPR TED Radio Hour was the Millennial generation, and how they can make an impact on society. The moderator made the statement that they could be the next "Greatest Generation" if they are given the opportunity and are motivated to act. As I listened, I couldn't help but think that message is relevant to every generation.

Leonard Bernstein said, "to achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time." Urgency and ambition are two great motivators - but it can be so easy to push urgency aside and live status-quo. One of NPR's guests, psychologist Meg Jay, encouraged the audience to "do something that adds value to who you are". Life is short. If you have a passion or a dream, the time is now to follow it. Make life count.

I couldn't help but think of Diana Nyad, who just last week at the age of 64, successfully completed the 110 mile swim from Cuba to Florida, sans fins or neoprene wetsuit. It was her fifth attempt at becoming the first human to complete the swim without a shark cage. Such an amazing example of a human willing to chase her dream and not give up!

Her speech slurred by a face swollen from jellyfish stings and fatigue after 53 continuous hours of swimming, Diana had three things to tell the crowd who came to watch her record-setting finish:

  1. Never ever give up. Find a way to make it happen
  2. You are never too old to chase your dreams
  3. It may look like a solitary endeavor, but it takes a team

Remember these three simple, but valuable lessons when you face your next challenge. You Only Live Once - make it count.

Straps, Braces & Tape.  Should I Wear Them?

Stacy Provencher

Have you had a sore, achy knee throughout your summer training? As many people begin their countdowns to their goal races this fall, the question of whether or not a brace, strap, or tape will help get them through their race seems to pop up.

In certain cases, a supportive device may be beneficial. It depends on what the diagnosis is, what's causing it, how much pain you're in, and how much you are compensating for your current injury. There are a variety of braces, straps, and tape on the market. They each function a little differently and some are more appropriate for specific conditions than others. Today, the focus will be on common knee conditions and how supportive devices may help.

 Straps, Braces & Tape

Before we start talking about straps, braces and tape, it is important to acknowledge that they do not cure an injury, they simply offer support to the involved joints and muscles. If the only thing you are doing to address the discomfort you are experiencing is wearing a brace, you are missing a huge part of the equation towards actually getting rid of your injury!

Andrew's Shoe Review - Nike Flyknit Free+

Andrew Judd

Nike loves pushing the envelope of innovation in sneakers. Their new Flyknit Free+ is no exception.

The Nike Free Run shoes are a favorite among minimal runners, gym goers and walkers who seek a lightweight shoe that allows them to move naturally. Ideally, for maximum natural motion, there should be a super flexible outsole and a barely there upper that doesn't trigger any resistance against your toes or sides of the foot. Nike nailed the sole with the Free Run shoes thanks to deep flex grooves and a pliable but well-cushioned mid-sole - but like most shoe companies, still struggled with an upper that hugged all foot shapes equally.

Flyknit FreeEnter Fly Knit technology. Nike's patented process knits the entire upper using their Flywire thread. Amazingly, the upper is literally one piece of thread (nearly a half mile long!), instead of pieces of mesh and overlays that are cut out from large pieces of cloth. Not only is this technology amazing for the environment since there is almost zero waste created, but by varying the stitching, Nike can engineer every bit of the upper down to the last stitch.

Flyknit FreeWhat this means to the wearer is a seamless upper that molds to your exact foot shape - regardless of whether you have a wide, strong foot or a narrow foot with a high instep. There is no beefy heel counter to irritate your Achilles or overlays to rub your bunions or toes the wrong way. In essence, the Flyknit Free+ is the most "free" of Nike's Free Run line to date.

Flyknit FreeThe first time I wore it, I almost forgot that I had a shoe on after a few minutes. Rather, it felt like I was wearing a really cushioned sock that offered compression in all the right places. Pretty amazing! If you seek out shoes that feel like they are one with your feet, you need to try the Flyknit Free+ on...though once you have it on, you may never want to take it off!

Staff Favorites

Grit & Grace SocksJulie - Balega Grit & Grace Socks (women): "Don't Tell Me I Can't!!!" Put THOSE words on your fleet feet and see what your run looks like today. Our favorite soft, stretchy, perfectly-fitting Balega socks now come with fortune-cookie inspiration to get you motivated, out the door, and through your longest runs (Hartford Marathon training anyone?). "Mind Over Miles," "Never Give Up," and more perfect words of Grit and Grace add punch while your feet stay dry and blister-free. Purchase a pair and $1 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Fund. Even better, these limited-edition socks count towards our Balega Buy 13, Get 1 Free deal. Get your pair before they're gone!

Addaday RollerShiloh - Addaday Rollers: The Addaday Roller products have quickly become our favorite toys. It's like The Stick on steroids! The rollers ("stick" size, travel/office-size and plantar fascia unit) are fantastic for massaging and de-knotting sore, tight muscles in a way that simple stretching or general foam rolling can't achieve. The secret is an inflexible steel rod and round gears that act like elbows or fingertips to mimic the deep tissue massage you would get from a masseur to relax and soothe your muscles. Come in and give it a try after that long run this weekend. We would be glad to show you how to use it so you too can move more and "Add-a-Day" to your life!

North Face HooieNorth Face HoodieBrian - North Face Hoodie (men & women): As we unpacked our first shipment of winter apparel last week, I couldn't help but add to my already lengthy shopping list of gear I "need" to continue running as temperatures drop. One item that stood out was The North Face's Surgent Hoodie - a performance-driven fleece is great for warm-up and cool-down or during your workout if you like to be toasty. It features a media pocket perfect for an iPod and hand pockets to keep your digits warm right up until you toe the line. Don't let the winter slow your training, come check this baby out!

Impact Hoodie Catherine - New Balance Impact Hoodie (women): This fantastic new hoodie is hard to miss! With a bright yellow half zipper, reflectivity bands on the cuffs, a neon pink mesh back, reflective logo and neon yellow thumbholes, it is a perfect combination of safety and style. The hoodie is also highly functional thanks to special reflective, non-bulky, brushed knit Lightning Dry fabric that wicks sweat rapidly to keep your skin dry and reduce clamminess which is key when you work up a sweat on chilly mornings.

Yoga for Runners - Sunday's at 5:30pm

For competitive people who can't touch their toes

              $15/class - Multi-Class Cards Available

Yoga for Runners As an endurance athlete and a yoga teacher I can assure you that yoga will make you a better athlete. Yoga will help you gain more flexibility, strength, and balance. Spending time on a yoga mat will also help you become stronger mentally. Yoga is also a tried and true way to prevent injuries, if that yoga is done specifically for athletes. You can benefit by adding a yoga practice to your training plan by specifying your yoga practice to your training.

Yoga is typically regarding by athletes as a stretching routine - indeed, visions of Cirque De Soleil may come to mind. However, a yoga practice designed for the athlete will help stretch tight muscles. This will promote the use of your full range of motion. Tight muscles are prone to injury, especially when we engage in activities that use repetitive motions such as swimming, biking, and running. Stretching will help your body process lactate after exercise and will improve muscle oxygenation.

Yoga will also help you strengthen your body as a whole. A yoga practice for athletes involves poses that use "static holds" - such as holding your body in a push-up position - and poses that "flow" from one to the other, such as a Sun Salutations. A crucial component to strength for an athlete is your core strength. To build core strength in, you can use static holds, flowing from pose to pose, along with specifically targeted sit-ups. It is very important to practice all poses with correct alignment. This will promote joint stability by not only by strengthening the muscles in your body, but also the ligaments and tendons that are connected to those muscles.

If you're curious, come check out our class - Sundays at Fleet Feet 5.30p! Bring your skeptism! Talk to me! We are very informal. Let me know if you are a beginner, have any injuries, and where you are in your training cycle. Hope to see you on Sunday!!!

Fresh Fall Figs

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N PlayFresh figs are a fall fruit finding their way into local grocery stores. They are sweet with a texture that combines the chewiness of their flesh and crunchiness of the seeds. Figs are a good source of potassium and fiber. They are also a rare fruit source of calcium. An 8 oz serving has 79 mg of calcium, a mineral important for bone density. The combination of calcium and potassium has been shown to be beneficial in reducing bones from thinning out. An 8 oz serving of figs (56 small figs) has about 180 calories and 48 grams of carbohydrates, making them an ideal tasty post run snack.

A simple way to enjoy these sweet treats is to slice them almost in half, like the pages of a book, and spreading a dollop of mascarpone cheese inside. In Melissa Clark's "In the Kitchen with a Good Appetite" she has a tasty recipe for Figgy Piggy Drumsticks and Thighs with figs and bacon for a salty, sweet entree.

Last week, I used half of this roasted fig dish over servings of grilled salmon. The following night, the leftovers were heated up with sauteed pancetta and served over salad greens, blueberries and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. If a social gathering is in your future, these roasted figs are a superb appetizer with soft cheese (like chevre) and crackers.

Roasted Figs with Rosemary

Ingredients:

  • 1 pint fresh figs
  • ⅓ cup honey
  • 4 large sprigs fresh rosemary, cut in half
  • Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375. Wash, stem and slice the figs in half. Arrange cut side up in a baking dish. Drizzle honey over the top. Tuck the rosemary sprigs in and around the figs. Add pepper to the top.
  2. Bake for 15 minutes, until honey is dark and caramelized.
  3. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving in whatever style suits you.

Mustache Fun Run & Chocolate Chip Cookie Bake-Off

Sun, Sept 22 @ 8:30am

  Mustache Fun Run

We invite you to join us and show support for two very special Fleet Feet Peeps. On September 28, 2001, Payton and Tammy Baysinger lost someone incredibly special to them - Payton's dad/Tammy's husband who died of a heart attack while making chocolate chip cookies. Payton was only 8 months old at the time.

This year on the 12th anniversary of his death, instead of sitting around and having a "sucktastic day", they are going to celebrate his life by sponsoring a 5k fun run! Payton has named the run, the First Annual Mustache Fun Run, in honor of his dad. MUSTACHES ARE MANDATORY!!!

This fun run will be on Sunday, September 22 at 8:30am. We will start and end the run/walk from Fleet Feet Sports. Following the run, we will have a chocolate chip cookies, ice cold milk (for drinking and mustache making), apples and cider. Participants are encouraged to bring a dozen or two of their finest chocolate chip cookies to share and compete in a contest for Best Cookie. Winner will be determined by Payton and will receive a fun prize.

Please RSVP here if you can join us!

Sports Bra Fit Fest

Thurs, Sept 26 - All Day!

Moving Comfort Fit Fest

It's time for another Cupperaware Party!

Research shows that more than 50 percent of women experience breast pain when exercising due to excess movement. Whether you are running, walking or jumping, your girls move in a Figure-8 pattern: up-down and side-to-side. This movement strains your Cooper's ligaments which can lead to premature sagging and back problems, not to mention the chafing that makes showering not so fun after a workout.

It's time to show your girls some love and support - and not with one of those cheap over-the-head sports bras that smooshes instead of controlling and enhancing! Join us on Thursday, September 26 for a special sale on all in-stock sports bras.

Save 10% on one bra or 20% on two or more bras - plus, you will receive $5 in Fleet Feet Bucks for each bra bought that can use be used towards any apparel purchase that day (e.g. buy three bras, get $15 to put towards that cute top you've been eyeing).

Plus, email Caitlin at [email protected] or call the store at 860-233-8077 to make an appointment to get professionally fit for a sports bra and we'll reward you with cute Run Happy Candle in addition to your discounts!

"Superhuman" is the only word to describe Dean Karnazes's feat of running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days.  Dubbed "The Ultramarathon Man," and ranked among TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World, he's run 350 miles nonstop and completed in an ultramarathon across the world's five great deserts: the Atacama, Gobi, Death Valley, Sahara and Antarctic.

Dean's greater message to all is, "Get off the couch, get healthy, hit the trails and go the extra mile." With that mantra, and with a physiology adapted for endless running, he's run 350 miles nonstop and completed in an ultramarathon across the world's five great deserts: the Atacama, Gobi, Death Valley, Sahara and Antarctic.
