Yesterday, I had to turn on my headlights as I drove home from work. Today, during my run I noticed that the leaves have already started changing color. Tomorrow, the new school year begins. All signs are leading to fall. Where the heck did summer go?
As much as I love the long, casual days of summer, fall is my favorite season. Growing up, I'm sure it had a lot to do with back-to-school shopping. My sister loved shopping for new clothes and shoes, but my passion was for school supplies (probably the reason why Staples is my favorite store). I hit the jackpot in 5th grade when my mom bought me the box of 64 Crayola crayons with built-in sharpener AND a fancy Trapper Keeper notebook. I was in heaven.
By the time I got to high school, I had a new reason to love the fall: cross country! Like many, I defected to the XC team after years of playing soccer. I liked that I was part of a team, but that ultimately, I was responsible for my own performance. Success was up to me. I could only achieve if I did the work so I trained all summer long. Sometimes twice a day.
Summer training was exhausting and sometimes monotonous and miserable, but fall was a different beast. Workouts focused on sharpening, then resting for race day. Fall brought the glories of PR's and even a few wins. Fall became synonymous with reaping the rewards of summer training. It made the work worth it.
Despite slower times and an increasing lack of summer training, fall is still my favorite season to race. I have a Pavlov response once the air turns crisp. I itch to test my legs and lungs. One of my favorite fall racing memories occurred five years ago when Simsbury High School XC coach Mike Cohen invited me to participate in the adult race at his Stratton Brook XC Invitational.
Toeing the line made me feel like I was 16 again. All the memories of why I love running XC returned as I crunched through dried leaves, squished through mud and powered up short, steep hills. The best part was the high school runners who stayed to cheer us on, positioning themselves on the most challenging parts of the course so we could feed off their enthusiasm and advice to focus and dig deep - just like my dad did back in the day. I discovered that trail running is really the adult version of XC - the only difference is that we wear super comfy trail shoes with rock plates instead of lightweight spikes with little cushion.
I am excited for you to discover the joy of running in the woods (in comfortable shoes) this fall as we partner with Simsbury HS and Saucony to resurrect the Stratton Brook XC 5k open race. The race will be held on Saturday, September 21 at 3pm (after the last high school race) - details here. Whether you are retired XC runner, seasoned trail runner or have never run off-road, I think you're going to enjoy this quintessential fall experience!

Compression: Does It Really Work?
|

You have probably seen runners in your neighborhood or at races who are wearing compression socks or sleeves. Maybe you have thought to yourself, "Do those really work?" or "I wonder if those would help my shin splints or calf cramps?"
During this time of year, with the start of cross country season and fall half and full marathons creeping up on us, I get a lot of questions about compression. Most commonly, people want to know how it works and if it's appropriate for their condition. Today, I will explain the concept behind compression, how it can benefit you, and which conditions it's appropriate for.
To really understand how compression socks and sleeves work, it's important to have a basic understanding of how blood flows through the body. The heart pumps oxygen containing blood to our extremities and working muscles though arteries. Once the cells use the oxygen and other nutrients from the blood, the now deoxygenated blood, along with lactic acid and other waste products, enter the veins to get taken back to the heart. Once the blood gets back to the heart, it's re-oxygenated by the lungs and the process is repeated.
Keeping oxygenated blood flowing to muscles is important for performance. The more oxygen the cells have, the better they will function. During exercise, the body produces lactic acid as a waste product. If this lactic acid is not removed from the muscles, it can contribute to soreness and decreased ability to perform.
Another factor in decreased performance is muscle fatigue. Muscular vibration during physical activity contributes to fatigue. Think about how much shock and vibration is going through your leg muscles as you pound pavement with 3-5 times your body weight while running. Over time, those little vibrations of the muscles add up and they become fatigued.
Click here to continue learning about compression and how the right type of compression can increase blood flow up to 40% during activity and 30% during recovery.

Andrew's Shoe Review - Newton Energy
|

Newton has always been a company that doesn't concentrate on changing and improving their shoes constantly. Instead they concentrate on improving your running. Newton shoes have always used their Action/Reaction technology, since they began less than a decade ago. This technology is mean to give your body a more proprioceptive sense of where your foot is - basically, it makes your body realize much better form by putting "lugs" under the ball of your foot, and it reminds your brain to land in a more mechanically correct position to reduce the risk of injury.
This technology has made Newton shoes some of the most expensive on the market which made people very reluctant to try them. With the new Newton Energy, this barrier has been reduced thanks to its $120 price point. The Energy gives the every-runner an introduction to Newton's action-reaction technology.
The shoe features five smaller lugs that are filled with a semi-hollow rubber similar to a bouncy ball. The lugs help to evenly distribute weight along the shoe and foot and provide a better sense of balanced which means more comfortable and relaxed running. The end result is a little less springy than a traditional Newton shoe, but you still get that "natural running" feel and a much more plush shoe. It's a perfect shoe for the first-time Newton wearer.
Are you curious to try out some Newton's yourself? Our Newton Educator, Mike, will be at our Thursday night track workout (University of Saint Joseph Track at 6:30pm) with demo shoes you can borrow for the workout. |

Stacy - Compression Sleeves: Two weeks into my spring marathon training, my calf cramped in the middle of a run. My initial, irrational thought was how am I ever going to be able complete this training with a cramping calf? After icing and hydrating, the first thing I did was get myself CEP Compression Sleeves.
CEP uses the same finely-tuned medical compression that their parent company (Medi) has been a leader in for decades, in a product designed for athletes. The performance enhancing compression keeps blood flowing through the muscles and provides support without restricting motion. Its breathable, antimicrobial silver ion fabric prevents my legs from getting too hot when I run and means I can wear it a few times before absolutely having to wash it!
The proof that the technology works was evident by my PR-setting marathon, and the fact that the next days while my quads and hamstrings were sore, my calves actually felt pretty good! For more information about how compression works, check out the Sports Medicine Corner.
Chaz - LightBender LED: As we head lose daylight hours, it's time to brighten up our running wardrobes so motorists can see us. New to our wide array of high-visibility gear is this fun light that is both safe and stylish. The LightBender LED is a lightweight, water (and sweat!) resistant band that can be bent to wrap around your arm or leg. The powerful LED lights can be seen up to 2400 feet away and can be set to steady or flashing; it's like a little light-up dance party! Plus, the easily replaceable watch battery is good for about 100 hours of light. Brilliant!
Jean - Pepper Spray: Kids going off to college? Or maybe you run or travel alone? Protect yourself with pepper spray. We are proud to carry the Sabre Red brand - the leading spray among consumers and law enforcement agencies worldwide, including the NYPD. Sabre Red sprays feature double the shelf life (4 years), up to 5 times more spray per canister for protection against multiple threats and does not need to be shaken before spraying. Available in key chain, hand-held and bike-mounted units.
Gabrielle - Wrap-Ture Tunic: Though I never want to wish away summer, I always look forward to fall. The weather cools, leaves change, pumpkin lattes return and cozy clothes reappear. This tunic/jacket from The North Face offers both comfort and fashion thanks to its flattering longer fit, thumbholes and asymmetrical zipper. Its medium weight fabric makes it a great transitional piece that can take you from carpool to the gym to Whole Foods to a well-deserved nap on the couch (haha, a girl can wish!). It pairs well with leggings and is a "top pick" of North Face sponsored athletes.

The event is free to everyone and donations are welcome but not required.

Yoga for Recovery
Summer may be winding down, but some of us have a few "A" races left in the season. It is very important to balance your training with yoga and strength training. You will run better, and race better, when you are stronger and you are able to maintain an appropriate range of motion.
For the next two months, the Yoga for Runners class at Fleet Feet will focus on recovery. We will maintain your core strength and range of motion. The yoga poses are intended to help you recover from your week and prepare you for the upcoming week.
Some runners avoid yoga because they are tired and injured. These are the runners that need it most! Come to class exhausted, sore, or even injured. That is why we have this class. Yoga for Runners will make you a smarter and more efficient runner!

Sweet Potato Patties w/Avocado Sauce
By Aubrey Schulz
|
For your next Meatless Monday, here is an easy recipe to brighten your plate. I've kept the recipe pretty simple. The original recipe called for garlic and I'm sure green onions or chives would add a nice splash of green, but at 37 weeks pregnant, garlic and onions are something I've avoided due to the unpleasant heartburn.
In most cases, certain flavor enhancers, like garlic and cumin, can be substituted for combinations that suit your tastes. This recipe would do well with a Mediterranean flair with oregano, parsley and basil. Cilantro would also taste great in these patties, especially since it tastes great with avocados.
I'm still many months away from thinking about making Baby Schulz's food, but tonight I cooked up an extra sweet potato and quinoa to use as leftovers tomorrow. Soon enough mashed up sweet potatoes will be making its way to into Baby Schulz's belly.
Sweet Potato Patties with Avocado Sauce
Ingredients - Patties:
- 1 cup sweet potatoes, cut into cubes
- 1 cup cooked quinoa
- ˝ cup panko bread crumbs
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp cumin
- salt and pepper
- 1 egg
Ingredients - Avocado Sauce:
- 1 avocado, cut into slices
- ˝ cup coconut milk
- zest and juice of 1 lime
Directions:
- Bring water in a medium saucepan to a boil. Add the sweet potatoes and cook for 12-15 minutes or until fork tender. Drain.
- Combine the remaining ingredients together, mashing the sweet potatoes into the mixture.
- Cook in a sauté pan over low-medium heat for 4-5 minutes each side, until golden.
- To make the avocado sauce, combine the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth.
- Serve over the sweet potatoes patties and save the remaining sauce.
