Positive Power

No Negative Thoughts "Running is like getting drunk in reverse. With drinking, it feels great at first, but then you start feeling awful. With running, you feel awful at first, but then, after you finish, you feel great."

 - Running with the Kenyans by A.Finn

Running isn't always fun. Pushing your body's limits can be uncomfortable and hard work. The biggest obstacle is usually your mind. It sends messages like "I can't", "This is too hard" and "Who really cares?"

Find a way to silence your mind, and a sense of strength and freedom will course through your body. You return to a primal state, intimately feeling your heart beat, lungs heave and sweat pour. Endorphins release and you feel like a champion. That feeling rarely happens to me while running, but most always, I feel it when I finish my run.

I will admit to being addicted to that "Runner's High". It is the reason why I, like many of you, push through pain and past limitations. Running is our route to enlightenment - albeit a route paved with bumps and obstacles. To succeed, you need to have willpower, focus and drive. You need to trust that your body is truly stronger and more capable than your mind thinks it is.

A secret of many runners to trick their mind into turning off is to repeat a mantra. It enables you to relax and run on pure, raw emotion. When she won the NYC Marathon in 2007, Paula Radcliffe chanted "I love your Isla" over and over (Isla, her daughter, was just 9 months old). Joan Benoit Samuelson pulled her hat down low and focused her eyes ahead with a look of steel as she pushed unrelentingly to win the gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Marathon. Her philosophy on running is that she doesn't dwell on it - she just does it.

Last week I participated in an IntenSati class which combines aerobic exercise with positive affirmations. At first I thought it was kind of hokey and silly, but as the intensity amped up, I felt more powerful and had a blast as the puddle of sweat pooled on the floor around me. By focusing on the positives ("I am strong!"), I was able to push past negative thoughts that can limit my performance. Once my mind and body began to believe the words, physical motion became driven by emotion, taking my workout to a whole new level.

As you ramp up your training and start racing this fall, harness the power of positive thinking. Don't let your mind wander and muddle itself with negative thoughts. Steel your eyes, dig deep and focus on a positive statement. Get lost in that thought. Feel the power. You can do it!

Stacy's Sports Medicine Corner

Achilles & Patella Tendinosis & Eccentric Exercise

Stacy Provencher

Are you frustrated by a chronic case of Achilles or Patellar tendonitis? In a recent Sports Medicine Corner article, I focused on acute injury and things that you can be doing during that phase to help get you back to running. Today, the focus will be on the chronic stage of injury.

Chronic injuries can be very frustrating. There is actually not much "inflammation" present, which actually makes the term tendonitis (inflammation of the tendon) a bit of a misnomer. There is not much to see; no swelling, redness, or discoloration. Nothing to suggest that there is really anything wrong at all, other than the fact that you are having pain in your tendon that is affecting your ability to run or walk (if it's really bad).

Muslce Fibers A more accurate term for this chronic case of tendon degeneration is tendinosis. Tendinosis is thought to be caused by a breakdown of the collagen fibers within the tendon without the presence of inflammatory cells. Inflammation is necessary for full healing of the microtears to occur. Without it, the body gets caught in a stage where it is breaking down collagen (cellular level of tendon), starting to repair it with scar tissue, but before full healing occurs, there is another microtear. Repeat this process over and over again, and you are left with chronic tendinosis.

If you are suffering from this condition, most commonly occurring in the Achilles or patella tendon with runners, you have probably tried everything at this point. New shoes, ice, heat, ibuprofen, injections, stretching, heel cups, avoiding hills, maybe even avoiding running altogether; nothing seems to really make it better. A key missing component of your routine could be eccentric exercise.

Andrew's Shoe Review - New Balance 870v3

Andrew Judd

The trend in shoes is lighter and faster. The one problem with this is that these shoes are less durable and/or don't have enough structure to them to support high mileage training. New Balance has responded with a great solution with their third version of the 870.

The 870 was introduced about 3 years ago with the intentions of being a lightweight, performance running shoe with a touch of stability. Unfortunately, like other shoes in this category, most runners could only get 200-300 miles out of it. But this new version features quality updates that dramatically improve its durability.

870v3 outsole First, New Balance juiced-up the outsole with more rubber. In fact, it has the same amount of rubber as its sister shoe, the 880, which is a more standard trainer - but thanks to decoupling the rubber into thicker, smaller circles instead of a continuous surface, the 870 keeps it's lightweight feel.

New Balance 870v3 - Men Next, they added a "T-Beam" that provides slightly more stability (again without added weight) and kept the fantastic RevLite midsole material as usual. For the upper, New Balance incorporated the same improvements seen in their other running-specific shoes like a thinner, but stiffer mesh that keeps the shoe from stretching and feeling looser as you wear it more. They also decreased the amount of overlays which trims even more weight off the shoe.

New Balance 870v3 - Women All combined, it creates a very light, very fast feeling shoe that is ready to take on any amount of miles you want to fly through. The 870v3 is a solid choice for the runner looking for a durable, but lightweight trainer that can assist in their goals to get faster, as well as a great marathon shoe for those who need a little extra "shoe love" than a racing flat can provide. True to New Balance's now famous slogan, this shoe helps "Make Excellent Happen".

Staff Favorites

CWX Pro Shorts Andrew - CWX Pro Shorts: My go-to tight in winter is CWX's Stabilyx Tights. My muscles appreciate the perfect combination of compression and support from its unique Support Web system provides (think kinesio-taping). Research shows that the Web reduces workload in the pull phase of running, as well as increases circulation to reduce fatigue. But tights are way too hot in the summer which is why these shorts from CWX featuring Cool Max are perfect! My IT band, hamstrings and glute get the support and protection they need without fear of over-heating. The shorts can be worn on their own or as a baselayer.

Casey - Nike Apparel: Our first shipment of Nike's fall apparel has arrived, and it is full of awesome pieces! Training for a marathon justifies my need to expand my running wardrobe. Plus, when you look great, you feel great. Two of my favorite pieces from this new collection are the Element Hoodie and Epic Run Capri.

Nike Element Hoodie The Element Hoodie is an unbelievably comfortable, lightweight layer that is perfect for the cooling weather. Made with a beautiful Dri-FIT heathered fabric and a touch of Spandex, it wicks away sweat, keeps its shape and is stylish enough to wear when you're not working out. As a bonus this hoodie has the ever popular thumbholes with fold over cuffs for extra coverage and a snug fit, as well as a kangaroo pocket for storage and hand-warming as you wait for your running partner.

Nike Epic Run Capri Colder weather also means it is time to put away your summer running shorts and go long...but not too long! Nike's new Epic Run Capri fits that niche perfectly. True to its name, these capris are epic! The ergonomic seams and extra Spandex not only feels luxurious, but hugs your body's natural curves, reduces bulk and provides great range of motion. The butter-soft fabric wicks moisture to keep you dry, mesh inserts on the back of the knees enhance breathability in that high-heat zone, and storage isn't an issue with a secure zipper pocket on the center-back and two internal drop-in waistband pockets. Pairs superbly with the Element Hoodie!

Nike Chaz - Nike Pre Tech Tee: Steve Prefontaine is a legend among runners. He once held the record for every distance event from 2,000m to 10,000m. Tragically, his life was cut short in a car accident - he was just 24 years old. Pre was an aggressive runner who went out hard and pushed the pace instead of hanging back to win strategically. He won 120 of the 153 races he entered. Celebrate Pre's spirit and your dedication to the run with this sweet tech tee from Nike. Available in white or grey.

Salted Caramel Gu Duncan - Salted Caramel & Passion Fruit Gu: Energy gels have gone gourmet with two new flavors from Gu Energy Labs. The Salted Caramel, featuring a Yeti named Salty, tops off your electrolyte stores thanks to the addition of more sodium and potassium than usual Gu gels and 20mg of caffeine to help your body absorb it all the faster. Perfect for long runs or rides in the sun and humidity. Plus, who can resist a wooly bully, Abominable Snowman, hairer-then-your-uncle-winter-wildebeast as its Pitchman?

Passion Fruit RoctaneGu has also released Passion Fruit flavored Roctane - an ultra-endurance gel that is a premium energy source during high intensity efforts. The recipe includes more ingredients that matter like more electrolytes, Histidine and complex amino acids. The new passion fruit flavor is not only tastilicious, but from now until the Ironman World Championships in Kona, all of Gu's profits from this flavor will be donated to the Challenged Athletes Foundation which helps buy prosthetics for disabled child athletes.

Zoomerangs Kids Running Program:

Registration is Open!

zoomerangs If your kids like to run, we've got a fun program just for them: Zoomerangs!  This non-competitive "open track" program is designed for kids aged 3-11. It gives them the opportunity to experience running in a fun, friendly atmosphere where the motto is "Will run for worms" (gummy worms, that is!).

Zoomerangs! It's a great place for kids to run safely, correctly using good form, make friends and get stronger/build endurance so they can perform better in other sports (or rock the mile in gym class). Most of all, our goal is to empower kids to accomplish their goals and instill in them a lifelong love of running. It's also a great opportunity for mom and dad to spend quality time with your kids - and get in shape too!

Thanks to our friends at the Glastonbury River Runners and Autism Families CONNECTicut (AFC), we will again be hosting three different sessions - two for typical kids and one for individuals with Autism:

Zoomerangs East (Glastonbury): begins Sept. 15

Zoomerangs West (West Hartford): begins Oct 6

Zoomerangs on the Spectrum (West Hartford): Sept 8

For more information and registration for the Zoomerangs East or West programs, click here. Registration is $45 per child and includes entry into the Race to Fill the Pantry or the Little Manchester Road Race.

For more information and registration for Zoomerangs on the Spectrum with AFC, click here. Thanks to the generous support of AFC, the program fee is just $25 and there will be experienced therapists on hand to help with the program.

Featured Race - Kids Who Tri Succeed

Kids Who Tri Succeed

Kids Who Tri Succeed is a great race for aspiring young triathletes aged 4-14.  This is the 8th year of this awesome event that shows kids how much fun working towards a fitness goal can be - and increased their confidence.

This kids-only triathlon will take place on the grounds of Mansfield Middle School and the beautiful Bicentennial Pond.  There will be four races by age group (4-6 year olds, 7-8, 9-11 and 12-14) with distances getting longer as the kids get older (there is a new course for the two oldest age groups).

This is a wonderful triathlon for kids just starting out since the kids can swim in the shallow end of the pond where the water is only waist-deep. Parents may ride and run alongside their children for the bike and run portions of the event.

Race fee is $20 if you register before August 20 (since this is a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, a one day $10 membership fee will be charged if the racer is not a current USA Triathlon member).  All racers will get a cool t-shirt and be professionally timed and photographed. There is a limit of 150 kids (about 80 spots are remaining at the time of this writing) and will sell-out so don't delay.

Click here to register or learn more.

Featured Race - Run for the Fallen

Run for CT's Fallen Final plans are underway for one of the most inspirational events of the year. The fourth annual Run for the Fallen CT will take place on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, from 6am-3:30 pm on the roads surrounding Wilbur Snow Elementary School in Middletown CT.

The run will serve as a memorial for all servicemen and women who lost their lives during their service in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We will specifically honor those fallen from Connecticut, unfortunately 64 in all. This event will also be a tribute to all servicemen and women who have given their lives through history for the liberty and freedom of which we all enjoy in this great country.

The event features an 8km course that will be run eight times for a total of 64 km (one kilometer for each soldier who lost their life). Event organizer,
Cliff Paquette, will once again run the entire distance but encourages everyone to join him for as many laps as they would like (run or walk - speed doesn't matter). Or folks can take part in other events honoring those who have fallen that will be occurring during the day at the school. Everyone is invited to enjoy food and beverages donated by generous sponsors. The event will culminate in a touching ceremony around 3pm.

All volunteers, runners, and Gold Star families can register here. There is no mandatory fee to participate in this event, although participants are encouraged to fundraise for various military based scholarships and charities (see this site for details). Donations can also be made when you pick up your bibs or by purchasing the event t-shirt (checks should be made out to "Run for the Fallen CT").

The event will take place rain or shine so plan to bring your friends & families and help honor our country's Fallen Heroes.

Grilled Eggplant

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N PlayDuring the August-days of summer, veggies prepared on the grill are delectable way to make use of summer's bounty overflowing from local gardens and farmer's markets. Cooking vegetables on the grill, along with a few pantry staples, is a simple, weeknight meal.

I'm frequently searching for easy, tasty ways to grill veggies. I like that this recipe is not elaborate and comes together in under 20 minutes. This recipe has a been in a regular rotation at our house, since the weekly arrival of eggplant in our CSA (community supported agriculture) share.

Grilled Eggplant with Feta Cheese and Tomato

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium eggplants
  • ⅓ cup olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Pinch of sugar
  • 3 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • a few stalks of parsley, leaves only, chopped
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 oz feta cheese

Directions:

  1. Slice the eggplant into rounds about ¾ of an inch thick. Salt lightly and set aside.
  2. Heat the grill to high heat.
  3. Whisk together olive oil, vinegar and sugar. Let the eggplant marinate in the mixture for about 3 minutes.
  4. Place the eggplant directly on a heated grill (or use a special grill pan) and cover. Cook for about 6 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are as soft as you prefer.
  5. Meanwhile combine the tomatoes, parsley, cheese and a little salt and pepper.
  6. Top the eggplant with the tomato mixture and serve.

Yoga for Runners

Yes, You Do Have Time For Yoga

You may not have time to devote an hour to a yoga class, but you can always find a few minutes to sneak in a pose. Spending time stretching and focusing on key areas will help you gain more flexibility, strength and balance. You can benefit by adding a few yoga poses to your training. Your next workout is only as good as your last recovery.

A great BACK RELEASE pose is the

Lying Spinal Twist.

  Spinal Twist

Hold this pose for 1 minute. Breathe and don't force it. Avoid stretching at your maximum as you move into a pose. This will only further stress your muscles. As you loosen up and relax, your body will naturally fall deeper into the pose.

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor. Bring your arms out to the side for support. On exhalation, allow your knees to drop to the left while keeping the right side of your shoulder and upper back on the floor. Feel free to adjust your arms so that you are comfortable.

If you would like an extra stretch in your chest and upper arms, you can place your arms at 90-degree angles at shoulder height in a goal-post position. If your shoulders aren't comfortably resting on the floor, lower your arm(s) to avoid shoulder stress. Breathe. Repeat on the opposite side.
