THE EXTRA MILE
|
Issue #1323
July 16, 2013
|
|
|

Whether it's a function of global warming or a natural shift in weather patterns, Mother Nature sure has things mixed up. Yesterday Waco, TX recorded their coolest July high temperature ever (75 degrees). Meanwhile, here in CT we're in our fourth week of temps in the upper 80's/low 90's and dew points in the mid-70's. I used to think it was too humid to run when the dew point (a measure of how saturated the air is) was in the upper 60's. Now I feel like a 67 dew point is almost desert-like.
Unless you enjoy running on a treadmill or are willing to hibernate and lose the fitness you've worked so hard for, the run must go on. Here are a few tips to make things a little more bearable:
Embrace Minimalism. No, I'm not talking shoes, rather wear as little clothing as possible - the lighter (color and fabric) and looser the better.
Slow Down. Better yet, walk. Research shows that the ideal temperature for running is 50-55 degrees. For every 5 degrees above that, your performance can degrade 2% - more if it's humid. This means that a run in 85 degree heat and high humidity can slow you down 15-20%. Don't expect any PR's and don't think your run was a failure if you have to walk. Adding walk breaks can actually allow you to run faster and longer.
Glide Up: Your skin is like a sponge - it expands when you sweat. Don't let chub rub ruin your run. Use Body Glide to prevent painful chafing and stinging showers. Trust me.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. About 60% of your body is water which is secretes via sweating to cool itself. Typically we don't feel thirsty until we've lost 2-3% of our body's water, but mental performance and coordination become impaired at 1% dehydration. The average runner's sweat rate is about 27-47oz/hour (while preparing for the 1984 Olympics, Alberto Salazar had a sweat rate of 125oz/hr!) - which means you need to drink about 6oz every 15 minutes to adequately hydrate yourself. Don't forget to replenish your electrolytes too by drinking Nuun or taking salt tablets.
Carry Ice. Did you know that your hand is your body's natural radiator? Cooling the palm of your hand by holding a partially frozen water bottle, ice cubes or a Cool Point Hand Cooler from Trigger Point stimulates thermoregulation signals to the brain which, in turn, can enhance athletic performance and delay fatigue.
Cover Your Head. I prefer wearing visors because they allow for maximum evaporative cooling from your scalp while soaking up sweat and shielding/relaxing your face and eyes - but lightweight hats are great too, especially for longer races since you can fill the hat with ice and enjoy the benefits of glacial melt.
Shrewd Route Planning. Choose routes that are shaded and feature water stops. Don't forget to linger at those stops to let your heart rate recover. Bonus points for running through sprinklers - and runs that end at a pool or lake. Try to run early in the day or later in the evening. Especially try to avoid running behind a garbage truck (learned this lesson the hard way this morning).
Medicate with 1000 cc's of SIU. That one is courtesy of staffer Randy, a Marine who served in Afghanistan. Seriously, sometimes you just have to Suck It Up and get it done. Your reward will come on the first cool day when you feel amazingly light and fast. That elusive Runner's High is worth the price.

Ouch! Should I Keep Running?
|

We've all been there.....something just doesn't feel right on your run. Maybe it's a twinge of the hamstring, an ache in the knee, or a dull pain in your shin. Do you keep running? Should you walk? When will you be able to run again? Should you use ice after your run? What about a hot pack? Maybe both? These are some common questions that I hear when someone is seeking advice about a running injury.
When someone tells me they felt pain on their run, my question back to them is often, "did you finish your run?" Their answer is almost always, "well....yes." I chuckle to myself sometimes because of the mentality that runners have. You are already a couple of miles from your house, you might as well finish the run then deal with whatever injury you have later. There is a fine line between pushing too far through aches and pains and not pushing hard enough. If we stopped running whenever we felt a little something, the truth is, most of wouldn't be doing much running at all! On the other hand, pushing through some injuries can have detrimental outcomes and turn those running shoes into cross training shoes pretty quickly!

There are many different injuries that range from mild to severe and within those injuries, there are even different phases (acute, sub-acute, and chronic). Each injury is treated a little differently and each phase of healing requires different types of treatments. While it is impossible to give specific instructions without knowing the diagnosis of the injury, I am going to provide you with some general guidelines on what to do when you feel something that's not right on a run.

Andrew's Shoe Review - Adidas Sequence 6
|

For years, the Adidas Supernova Sequence has been the go-to stability shoe from Adidas. It has always had a comfortable, cushioned ride and a super plush interior.
This year's Sequence has improved hugely on the one aspect some wearers had with it: it felt like running with a boat on your foot. With this new version, each shoe lost half an ounce, but the real story is the fit. Thanks to the GeoFit styling borrowed from Adidas' Energy Boost which makes the shoe feel like a seamless sock - accommodating and secure. Instead of being a bit on the bulky side, the new Sequence is streamlined and feels fast! It even looks fast thanks to the removal of the mirrored stripes
Another nice improvement is that they took out the mirror stripes on the mid-foot wrap, and made it a less bulky plastic that will lock the foot down much better, and is now reflective instead.
On top of a totally redesigned fit, the meat of the shoe has also undergone some changes. The lower profile, more flexible outsole works in combination with the Formotion unit to soften the impact of foot strike and provide a more natural ride. The upper is now made with a breathable air mesh and the dated mirrored stripes have been replaced with a lighter series of stripes that are both fashion and function as they wrap your mid-foot and give you that nice locked-down feeling.
The outsole remains the same, featuring sticky Continental rubber for optimal traction even in wet conditions as does the inclusion of the Pro-Moderator stability system to help prevent over-pronation. In all, this shoe is ready to take any punishment or weather condition and still be there for you.
I like to think of this shoe as having the same "cushy Cadillac" heart as the Sequence of old, but now it has new super-charged blood flowing through it to make it run like a Ferrari.

FF Staff Favorites - Icy Feet
By Brian Carrington
|
Marathon season is right around the corner and I know firsthand the aches and ailments that running 40 +-mile weeks can cause. Pounding the pavement or trails this much can lead to heel spurs and a runner's worst enemy, plantar fasciitis. Sure, in an ideal world I'd lay in a tub of ice water after each workout to prevent this stuff, but who's got time for that?
Every moment of my "free time" outside of work and running is spent chasing around my 10-month old puppy, Zeus, so finding time to stretch and ice properly has been hard to come by until recently. Now anytime I'm at home I grab my Icy Feet out of the freezer and wear them while I'm watching TV, making dinner, or chasing Zeus around because he has my socks in his mouth.
Whether you're a high mileage runner, have swelling issues or simply chronic foot pain, you can't go wrong with this ingenious, easy-to-use product. Sure they might look a little silly, but the relief is legit. Forget stiff ice packs and quick-thawing bags of peas, strap on Icy Feet and chill!
(Brian is a North Carolina native who now lives and runs in West Hartford. You can find him running trails throughout CT in an attempt to wear out his puppy, Zeus. He recently completed his first 50 Mile race (an overnighter on some gnarly mountain trails) and has his eyes set on the Virgil Crest 50 in September. Apparently, Zeus has a lot of energy).

Featured Race - X-Treme Scramble
|
Sometimes you just need to break away from routine and do something crazy. For runners, that means doing one of the Hartford Marathon Foundation's Thursday night X-Treme Scrambles.
Thanks to the great support of the folks at Riverfront Recapture, Harpoon Brewery and Moe's Southwest Grill, these 5ks are not your typical road race. No. Sometimes you run across the bridge and down the stairs to Charter Oak Landing. Other times you may climb over Park River, wade along the river beach or climb up the Riverfront steps. Be warned: portions of the course might get you wet, might make you curse, might make you dirty, but will always make you smile - especially since there is cold Harpoon beer, a Moe's burrito and music waiting for you at the finish. There are two X-Treme Scrambles left this summer: Thursday, July 18 at 6:30pm (theme is Jazz - warm-up for the Greater Hartford Jazz Festival this weekend) and Thursday, August 22 at 6:30pm (Saturday Night Disco Fever, baby!). The course starts at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.

Run Hartford for Charity
|

The Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial Committee is an official charity of this year's ING Hartford Marathon and 1/2 Marathon to be held on Saturday, October 12th in Hartford. We are very excited to be part of this huge, annual running event and we are inviting runners to join our 'team' - Run to Honor Their Sacrifice to benefit the construction fund for the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial. Our Memorial Committee is currently working on groundbreaking and construction plans slated for later this summer.
Runners can run the full or 1/2 marathon, 5K (adult, student, child) or the Kids K. They can solicit pledges for CTHM and will receive a custom CTHM t-shirt listing our 64 fallen heroes who gave their lives serving in Iraq & Afghanistan. They will also have special running privileges and benefits, and will show the 40,000+ people running and in attendance that day that they support our CT veterans and the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial. YES, You Must Cross-Train!
I love to run as much as the next person. No doubts there. However, it is important to vary your training. Balance is the key to staying healthy. Cardio, strength, flexibility, and range of motion - all need to be part of your routine.
It can seem overwhelming, but I promise you it is NOT. Start with something new that sounds fun. If it is not fun and it is just work, you most likely won't stay with it. Or if you don't have time to get out for something new, sneak it into your life. I advise to set an alarm that goes off hourly and each hour just do 1 to 3 minutes of an exercise. It can be that easy.
If you are totally lost, ask questions! Contact me, talk to your favorite Fleet Feet Coach, or find out what friends are doing. It can be challenging to step out of your comfort zone and it make take a few tries to get it right. But, I can promise you that you will be healthier in the long run.
Come join us!

Lavender Lemonade
By Aubrey Schulz
|
The sultry summer heat calls for a cooling and refreshing beverage. Lemonade is a quintessential cool down quencher. A tall, sweaty glass offers refreshing relief to parched souls. It is surprisingly simple to make your own lemonade. This herbal version offers the slight hint of the exotic, mixed with the familiar tang of the lemons.
Lavender Lemonade
Ingredients:
- 1 Heaping Tbsp lavender flowers*
- ⅓ cup honey
- ¼ cup fresh squeezed lemon juice, about 3-5 lemons
Directions:
- Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the lavender flowers in container capable of holding the boiling water. Let the herbs steep for 5-8 minutes. Then remove the herbs.
- Add the honey and stir to dissolve. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Once its cool enough, pour into a pitcher and add lemon juice.
- Add in 2-3 cups of cold water.
- Chill and adjust the lemons and sweetness to your taste. Serve over ice.
*You can also substitute the lavender flowers with a 2" sprig of rosemary.
