Like many runners, I have a "Type A" personality. I am competitive and have a black belt in multi-tasking. I usually take on more than I should which results in nearly every minute of my day (and night) being planned. I'm always racing to meet some sort of deadline and hate taking breaks. Even as much as I love to run, I will only venture out when I have come to a good stopping point or first thing in the morning before I get entrenched in something.
The other day I was on a roll, completing all kinds of tasks on my To Do list thanks to a stormy day, when the rain stopped abruptly like someone had turned off the faucet. Almost instantly, the sun started to break through the clouds. My experience as a meteorologist taught me that when the sun comes out after a late afternoon storm, there is a good chance a rainbow will appear. At first I thought, "I don't have time to stop and look, I need to keep working", but that voice of reason inside me said "Go! Check it out".
I went outside, stood with my back to the sun so that my shadow faced the storm clouds and looked up...and saw the brightest double rainbow I have ever seen. As I stood there watching it, the storm clouds began to break apart and dance amidst the rainbows. Blue sky replaced grey and as the clouds uncovered the sun rays, the rainbows' colors ebbed and flowed like a beating heart. It was breathtaking...and short-lived. In a matter of two minutes, it was over.
After Mother Nature's show, I went back to my desk. I couldn't help but think that I had almost missed it because I was too caught up in work. I wondered how many other times I missed amazing moments or experiences because I was "too busy" to stop what I was doing. Why do I put so much importance on work deadlines instead of human experiences?
The best moments in life are usually unplanned and fleeting. If we don't stop to enjoy them, we may never have the opportunity. The same is true about waiting for the perfect time to do something (like run a 5k or a marathon). There will never be a perfect time. There will always be work or home commitments. Your body will always have some sort of issue or pain. You have to let some of that go and make an effort to break from your usual routine. Oddly, when you do that, you will magically have the time to make it happen. And I promise you, when you cross the finish line of your Goal Race, you won't regret the time spent - or sweat produced!
So, take time for rainbows. Enjoy moments with your family and friends. Get out there and make your life extraordinary.
Live Fit!

Andrew's Shoe Review: New Balance 880
|
The 880 has been the go-to neutral shoe from New Balance for the past three years with each version getting better, though the new 880v3 really knocks it out of the park by amping the performance features. Years of research on design, biomechanics and materials has gone into making sure the 880v3 not only looks great, but feels great too, starting from the ground up - literally since the "Nergy" material that is responsible for the soft feel has been moved closer to the ground. Research has shown that we only use about 30% of cushion closest to the ground. The rest is just what your foot sits on. Running shoes always put that softer, more comfortable material right next to the foot, but that takes away your feel for the road and what your foot is doing. The new 880v3, instead, puts the softer, higher cushion material next to the ground to reduce impact better than ever, while giving your foot a better feel for the road. There is also more flexibility in the forefoot to make your stride feel more natural and responsive.
The upper also brought new innovations, starting with the totally seamless upper that utilizes a form of New Balance's unique "Phantom Fit" overlays and more "felt-like" material inside the shoe which reduces foot irritation dramatically. Thanks to a brand new arch-wrap design that grabs the foot and doesn't let go, you can say goodbye to slop and blisters. And for those who love color, New Balance doesn't disappoint with the 880v3. Both the men and women's versions (including the widths) offer some brilliant color options that are sure to brighten your run!
Overall, the improvements for the 880 are innovative and a welcome change to some of the comparable shoes from its competitors. I've been running in this shoe for about a month now and have been impressed with the ride and quality, especially at the $115 price point since it is comparable to other shoes that are much higher priced.

Ankle Instability? Do the "DOT DRILL"
|

Many of us have sprained our ankles at some point in our lives. A lot of people don't think ankle sprains are a big deal. They are one of the most common athletic injuries, and, if given enough time, the swelling eventually goes down and you can resume activity. That's where a lot of problems begin. For runners, particularly those who enjoy running on trails, those ankle sprains of the past could come back to haunt you.
Running on uneven surfaces like a trail (or an uneven sidewalk) requires ankle strength, balance, and proprioception. The ankle is a very mobile joint. Its large range of motion allows us to perform a variety of movements including running, jumping, and cutting. The same mobility that makes it possible to perform those activities also contributes to its vulnerability.
There are three major ligaments on the lateral aspect (outside) of the ankle that contribute to the stability of the joint. The muscles around the joint, most notably, the peroneals, provide added stability. The most common sprain is a lateral ankle sprain which is caused by ankle inversion, or a "rolling in" of the foot and ankle. When this type of sprain occurs, the ligaments are overstretched, and often, there is an onset of swelling, pain, and loss of motion. The swelling inhibits normal function of the muscles and reduces proprioceptive feedback from the ankle to the brain, resulting in a dysfunctional ankle.
The biggest problem after a sprain is the resulting instability of the ankle. The ankle relies heavily upon proprioceptive feedback. Proprioception is the body's awareness of itself in space. When the receptors in the ankle sense that it is in a vulnerable position, it sends this message to the brain. The brain then responds with a message to the muscles of the lower leg (peroneals), to contract to protect the ankle.
After an ankle sprain, proprioceptive awareness is decreased. As a result, the body cannot react to help stabilize the ankle. Often, there will be recurring, nagging, sprains of the ankle. Sometimes they are major, involving swelling and the inability to continue activity. Most commonly, the sprains are minor and don't cause much swelling if any at all. Since there is no injury to really "see," people don't think much of it. These recurrent ankle sprains can be very annoying and potentially harmful to the long term health of the ankle joint.
To prevent or rehabilitate an ankle sprain, the focus must be on increasing ankle strength, balance, and proprioception. One of my favorite exercises is called the dot drill...

What the FF Staff is Using
|
Carrie - Icebreaker Shirt & Shorts: My taste in apparel is high-quality, no-fuss. I want it to be comfortable, flattering, versatile, long-lasting and easy to launder. That's why I can't get enough of Icebreaker. I love how the merino wool is cozy warm in the winter, but cool and breathable in the summer. It's tough enough to outlast a long run or hike in the mountains, yet look nice enough to wear touring Europe. I especially like how it doesn't wrinkle or stink - even after wearing it 3 days in a row.
This year, Icebreaker added a little Lycra to their fabric for a more forgiving fit that looks great on many body types. They also softened the wool even more. Of course, I couldn't resist purchasing a few pieces. My favs are the Zest Shorts that feature a relaxed fit and longer legs and a wide waistband doesn't ride up or bunch. The side zip pocket is big enough for my phone.
I also purchased the Flash short-sleeve tee made from their lightweight 150gram merino and designed to prevent overheating and clamminess. There are mesh panels in high-heat areas (underarms) and a handy hidden pocket in the back. The subtle flower graphic adds a bit of style that generates a few compliments every time I wear it (Stacy even liked it so much, that she bought one for herself!).
(Guys: we have Icebreaker tees, singlets, shorts and underwear for you too!).
Steph - PowerIce & HydroFlask: I have an obsession with ice. One of the best presents I ever received as a kid was a special mug that turned your drink into a Slushy. I'd make OJ Slushies for breakfast, Lemonade Slushies in the afternoon and on Friday night during Dukes of Hazard, I would make the ultimate treat: a Coke Slushy!

It's amazing that I didn't think to invent one of the coolest new products on the market: PowerIce bars. Think "sports drink ice pop". The pops are available in orange and lemon lime flavors and can be purchased singularly or in boxes of 6 or 10. They are only 30 calories a piece, have 17mg of Potassium and 25mg of Sodium to replace electrolytes, ZERO high fructose corn syrup, and are Gluten Free and Kosher. So good, So refreshing especially after a hot, humid run or soccer game, or baseball tournament or...
My other favorite product of the season is the new HydroFlask wide-mouth bottle that is perfect for smoothies (see Aubrey's recipes below). The bottles are made with food grade 18/8 stainless steel so they are completely BPA-Free and resistant to bacteria and odors. They feature a double-wall vacuum insulation technology that keeps your contents hot or cold. I've put it to the test and it really works. My iced beverages stay cold for 24+ hours (there is even ice left despite leaving the bottle in my hot car all day) and my morning tea is still hot at the end of the day. Freakin' amazing!

Gently Used Spikes & Trainers Needed
|
My name is Ainsley. I am 11 years old and I love to run. I hope to be a sprinter when I get older. I have two younger sisters and we have started a group we call 3Helpers. What we hope to do with 3Helpers is to try to help others who need it.
Our first project is to try to help a primary school in Jamaica. We are going to be visiting Jamaica this summer with our family. While we are in there, we will be visiting a primary school (grades 1 - 6) in Kingston called New Providence Primary School. There is a track and field team at N.P.P.S but they don't have a lot of money to buy the things they need, like running shoes and spikes. Some of the runners don't even have any running shoes at all.
My sisters and I decided to try to help the athletes at this school by collecting gently-used running shoes and spikes for children ages 6 - 12. We are also raising money to help pay for equipment and multi-vitamins that the athletes need. We will have a donation bin at Fleet Feet in West Hartford where people can leave gently-used children's running shoes and spikes to be donated to the runners at N.P.P.S.
For more information, you can email us at donate@3Helpers.org or read more about our project here.

Form Really Matters
Yoga will help you maintain your flexibility and range of motion. Typically, the harder we train the more tight and restricted we become. We have to step up our recovery to maintain flexibility. With that flexibility comes appropriate range of motion with the joints and muscles. Without that range of motion our running stride will change. We may shorten our stride, not pick the knees up high enough, or not extend the hip forward enough. This is how we get injured!
Yes, form really matters. When running or doing yoga and strength exercises, I prefer that you stop the exercise BEFORE your form has broken down. When form breaks down and you are not aligned, injury usually comes next. Sometimes we can feel that we are "off" or a coach may point it out to us. The best thing to do at this point is to stop take a moment and restart. If you still can't maintain proper alignment, call it a day and go home. RECOVER.

Two Tasty Smoothie Recipes
By Aubrey Schulz
|
On the go, unmotivated to prep a meal, post workout cool down, or means to boost your fruits and veggie intake - these are just a few reasons to whip up a batch of a delicious summertime smoothie. Smoothies are a great way to get creative in the kitchen and let your tastebuds and instincts guide you to develop your own signature drink.
Select fresh in-season produce, use overripe fruit sitting on the counter or frozen fruit. Don't forget the extras like fresh mint and ginger...and get a Hydro Flask bottle from Fleet Feet to keep it cold until you are ready to drink it!
This rice smoothie is best after a long run. The banana version of this drink provides 221 calories, 49g of carbs and 6 g of protein.
Rice Smoothies
Ingredients:
- 1 ¼ cup cooked rice
- ¼ cup yogurt
- ½ cup milk
- 1 ripe banana OR 2 Tbsp Nutella OR ½ cup strawberries

This Wednesday, Vanessa wants to personally say THANK YOU. She will is bringing yummy sneaker-shaped cookies to share. Come by to meet this extraordinarily strong woman!

"Hot Flashes & Half Ironnmans" Book Signing
Sun, June 30 @ 3:30-4:30p
| |
"Women get older, dammit, and sometimes it sucks, especially for women who pride themselves on athleticism and an adventurous spirit. Hot flashes. Weight gain. Sleepless nights.
Yes, it can be hard, but middle age doesn't have to be a flashing red stop light. It's perfectly acceptable for women of a certain age, a certain level of hormonal imbalance, and a certain amount of cellulite to don spandex and even enter the rarefied sport of endurance triathlon.
In fact, there's a huge advantage to aging: much of the potential competition drops out in favor of the couch and a remote control."
This is the perfect summer read for the "maturing" female athlete. It's the perfect combination of informative (how to ease perimenopause symptoms and maintain a bike) and humorous.
Pam will first be at Barnes & Nobel in Blue Back Square from 2-3pm for an Author Workshop. Afterwards, she will be joining us at the store from 3:30-4:30pm for a meet-and-greet and book signing.
To reserve a copy of the book (Pam will not have any books for purchase with her) or learn more about the Barnes & Nobel Workshop, click here or call 860-236-9900.
