Running Buddies

Running Buddies National Running Day is this Wednesday. Like all special occasions, the celebration is best when shared with friends, though in this case, we are not talking about your "normal" friends. No, we're talking about that special breed of friend you call Running Buddy. Only they will understand the importance of this day and your need to completely rearrange your day so you can celebrate appropriately.

One of my favorite parts about running is the connection you make with the people you run with. It is a friendship that transcends ordinary relationships. Maybe it's because they see you at your worst...and your best...and still want to run with you.

They know intimate details about you like how tight you like your shoelaces, where you need to use Body Glide and your favorite flavor of Gu. They watch your back while you pee in the woods, carry an extra tissue/toilet paper, put your gigantic car key in their pocket, let you drink their water and share their salt tablets on long, hot runs. They will meet you at all hours of the day or night and in all kinds of weather, teach you how to blow a snot rocket and compliment you on how far you can spit.

You have your own language that includes grunts and words like "converslowtion" (an attempt to slow your buddy down by engaging them in conversation...especially good when it requires them to tell a long story) and act like they are really tired or need to tie their shoe so you don't feel guilty taking a much-needed rest break. They know exactly what you are referring to when you say a generic word like hill, mailbox or pinecone.

Running buddies are notorious for tricking you into running longer distances and make you do ridiculous things like run up the biggest hill in town, do push-ups and inch worms in the middle of your run and convince you to sign-up for longer races and more Fleet Feet Training Programs. They say it will be fun. Usually they are right - though, I usually don't admit it to them right away!

There is no doubt that running is a challenging activity, but aerobically it has one of the best returns on your time investment compared to other sports. Every time I hear someone say that they tried to be a runner, but quit because it was just so boring, I want to tell them that it is because they tried to do it alone. There is something magical that happens when you run with someone else. You run further and faster and more often. I actually get grumpy when I miss a run with one of my buddies.

The coolest aspect of our training programs is the friendships that are forged through sweat. One of my favorite comments from a participant was that she felt like a kid again because she made new best friends. Being a mother of two, she thought that she was destined to only be "so-and-so's Mother" for the rest of her life. But through running, she was able to be herself and focus on herself for a few hours a week. It empowered her tremendously.

Even after nearly 5 years, she still runs with those friends. Of course, they've since graduated from a 5k to running full marathons and doing triathlons.  I think an ultra is next.  Ahh, that's what are friends for...

Andrew's Shoe Review: Brooks Glycerin

Andrew Judd Hello Everyone!

I want to introduce myself as Fleet Feet's new Shoe Reviewer now that Schuyler has begun his new life in Seattle, WA. I've been working at the store for five years and have been a running shoe connoisseur (some call me a Shoe Nerd) ever since I started running and bought my first pair of Brooks trainers at Fleet Feet Sports in high school.

One of my proudest running achievements was racing the Foot Locker National XC Championships in 2007, though I recently competed in the North Face Endurance Challenge 50k Championships in San Fran last December and thrive on the camaraderie and challenge of team relays like Ragnar. I love product testing the latest running shoes and gear and look forward to sharing my findings with you!

Now, on to the shoes...

In the late 90's to early 2000's, shoes were made to be a big barrier between yourself and the ground, trying to keep you safe from ground impact forces and excessive pronation - though, it was later found that adding too much to the shoe can do more harm than good. The next trend went the opposite direction - creating shoes so minimal that you were almost running barefoot. That created its own set of problems.

These days, shoe manufacturers are trying to find a good balance between natural motion, support and cushion. They understand that everyone's feet and gait are unique and require different levels of support and cushion. The Brooks Glycerin has always been known as a high-cushion, neutral shoe, but the updates to the Glycerin bring a much better balance.

Brooks Glycerin - Men The Glycerin 11 features some nice tweaks/refinements to the massive overhaul that Brooks did for the Glycerin 10. In the 10, Brooks completely redesigned the outsole to incorporate their "caterpillar heel" and added full-length DNA (a proprietary cushioning material) to the midsole which work together to incrementally slow the foot and provide a softer impact on foot-strike. This year, Brooks eliminated the plastic torsion shank in the middle of the foot to make the shoe more flexible, and lightweight. That along with the improved and more seamless upper, this shoe will fit like a glove.

Brooks Glycerin - Women The upper gets a makeover as well thanks to bright colors and a midfoot wrap that hugs the foot and makes the colors pop. Say "so long" to plain white-based shoes. In the new Glycerin, even the wide model features a fun color that screams "take me for a run". Check out more details in this fun video from Brooks.

The Glycerin is my go-to high mileage shoe and is great for neutral runners who like - or need - a cushioned ride! It's available in both regular and wide widths - and in limited edition colors that you can only find at your local running store!

We're having a "Treat Yourself" Brook's Demo Run on Saturday, June 15 at 9am.  Come try out the new Glycerin & Ghost - freebies & Nuun for all attendees!

Heat Cramps: Prevention & Treatment

Stacy Provencher

Last week, we all got a taste of something that we weren't ready for.....heat and humidity! It's that time of year when runs become a little more difficult and potentially more dangerous if we don't take care of ourselves properly. The combination of heat and humidity is nothing to mess with, as it can result in serious conditions such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. One of the more nagging conditions that can occur, especially in runners, is heat induced cramping. Most commonly, cramps are experienced in the calf muscles, but can occur in the hamstrings, quads, and feet.

Calf Cramps A cramp can put an end to your run, quickly! A cramp is a persistent, involuntary muscle contraction. This contraction comes on suddenly and is very intense and painful. Typically, the cramp will occur during exercise, but it can also occur after, or even at night after exercising during the day. The exact reason behind cramps isn't well understood. Cramps typically occur during hot weather, but they can also occur in cold conditions. It is believed that dehydration and electrolyte imbalance play a large part in cramping.

Salty Hat How can we prevent and treat cramps? Eat bananas, right? That used to be the thought, but not so much anymore. While eating bananas may be part of the equation, it certainly isn't the only thing that should be done to prevent cramps.

If your hat or shirt ever looks like the picture above after a run.....read on!

What the FF Staff is Wearing

Impact Singlet Andrew Judd - Impact Singlet: I recently put this singlet to the test by wearing it during the ultra-version of the Cape Cod Ragnar Relay. It performed so beautifully that I wore it on each of my 3 legs (a total of 36 miles in less than 24 hours). I didn't even need Body Glide despite wearing a safety vest and lights that tend to encourage chafing.

This singlet is perfect for race day or training because it is super lightweight and semi-fitted to keep it a little loose, yet still aerodynamic. It is made with a revolutionary fabric called NB-Ice that is activated by moisture (sweat or rain) and actually cools the skin. So perfect on those really hot days - especially at Iron Horse this past Sunday. This will definitely be one of my "go-to" tops this summer! (don't like singlets? Check out the Impact short-sleeve tee!).

Inferno Split Short Duncan - Saucony Inferno Split Short: With the temperatures increasing, the amount of clothing we need to wear while running is decreasing.  What better way is there to show off those sun sequestered winter legs than throwing on a pair of split shorts!

Now I know some of you may not be so hasty to grab a pair of "skimpy" shorts featuring a 2, 3 or 4 inch inseam, but trust me, this is just like when you first got your drivers license; the freedom you acquire is unmitigated and the coolness factor swells...quite literally.

These splits from Saucony feature a mesh side panel that allows for more air to get in and the short inseam lets your legs turn over like they want to, and an easily accessible zipper pocket on the back lets you carry keys, some nutrition and the number of that cute runner you pass every day!  Whether you utilize them for racing, workouts, your daily dose of running, or that hot weekend when your A/C breaks, split shorts are the way to go. Trust me.

Icebreaker Skort Julie - Icebreaker Skort & Brooks D'lite Reversible Top: Mesh & Wool: these opposites really do attract...to form an attractive and cool summer running outfit! Yes, I just used "wool" and "cool" in the same sentence. Merino wool is Mother Nature's best thermo-regulating fabric. Breathable in the summer, insulating in the winter, yet exceptionally soft and lightweight (and unstinkable...even if you don't wash it for weeks). Think about the Merino Sheep - they thrive in the Southern Alps of New Zealand where temperatures soar into the 90's in the summer and plummet to sub-0 in the winter. Through it all, the sheep remain the optimal temperature.

I particularly love the Icebreaker Swift Skort because it flatters all bodies - including pear shapes which can be hard to fit. The elastic waistband is super comfy and the perfect length boy-short liner provides D'lite Mesh Topthe coverage you want. There is even a handy inside key pocket!

I like to pair the skort with Brook's D'Lite Reversible Top (short sleeve or tank styles available). The moisture-wicking mesh is ultra-light and super cool. The mesh is double-layered to provide an opaque look (i.e. it's not totally see-thru) which gives it the added bonus of being reversible: solid purple on one side, purple stripes on the other. Very cool!

Orange Glazed Shrimp & Chicken Kabobs

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out N PlayDuring the warm weather, backyard grills are running at full steam. Who wants to heat up the house with a warm oven, when you can grill outdoors? Enjoy this flavorful recipe alongside grilled veggies and over rice or your other favorite grain.

Orange Glazed Shrimp and Chicken Kabobs

Ingredients:

  • ¾ lb shrimp, peeled
  • ¾ lb chicken breasts, cut into cubes
  • Skewers, metal or wooden

Marinade:

  • ¼ cup thawed orange juice concentrate
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp tamari (or soy sauce)
  • 2 tsp toasted sesame oil

 Directions:

  1. Mix all the marinade ingredients together in a small saucepan. Warm just enough to incorporate honey.
  2. Pour over the shrimp and chicken. Ideally allow to marinate for an hour, although even a brief time will produce tasty results.
  3. Thread the shrimp and chicken onto separate skewers to accommodate for different cook times.
  4. Grill the chicken for 8-12 minutes and shrimp for 4-5 minutes until cooked through.

Yoga for Runners

Summer Yoga at Fleet Feet

I am frequently asked how to work yoga and strength work into a training program. It is important to keep your yoga and strength work in-line with your running. When you are running at a greater intensity, typically more strength work is needed to support your body. It is also important to keep up with yoga and maintain proper range of motion and maintain your flexibility.

While most of us are running and training harder in the warmer months we are sometimes too tired for strength work or yoga. It is beneficial to back off of strength work during the summer as you get closer to your key races. However, there is a way to keep yoga in your training.

In our Fleet Feet Yoga for Runners Class during the warmer months we practice Yin Yoga. Yin Yoga is a restorative yoga practice. We take moderately challenging poses and hold them for roughly 3 minutes. This is a wonderful way to balance higher intensity running and training. This type of yoga practice helps to train your breathing and focus while at the same time working on flexibility and range of motion.

Join us! And good news... Fleet Feet is air-conditioned!
