ISO...The Perfect Sole Mate

Shoe ValentineFinding the perfect sole mate (aka running shoe) is a lot like finding the perfect soul mate. There are a lot of options out there that might look fantastic, but aren't such a good match once you get to know them. As my mom told me when I was in high school trying to decide which boy to ask out to the Snowball Dance, "it's not what you can see on the outside; but rather what is on the inside that matters most." When you find that perfect match, your love will survive even the toughest of tests.

A recent study found that a whopping 70% of people purchase their running shoe based on looks (mainly color). Another study found that about 70% of runners will become injured. Coincidence? OK, maybe that correlation is a bit of a stretch, but I know firsthand that wearing the wrong shoe can definitely increase your chance for injury and make running unpleasant.

Last year my favorite shoe was "updated". While the shoe company might think they improved it, I wasn't so happy. Neither was my Achilles. It was time for me to start "dating" and find a new sole mate. Good thing I work at a running specialty shop where the shoes, technology and expert knowledge are plentiful.

I had been spying a pair of brightly colored shoes that I envisioned myself running really fast in. According to the last time I had my feet analyzed (six years ago!), the shoes were the right stability class for me so I grabbed a pair in my size and took them for a run on the treadmill. While the shoes looked cool, my feet did not. My left foot was rolling in and my right heel never touched the ground. Yup, I was a prancing pronater. Not good.

I became a staff training project. We used both the rear and side-view cameras to analyze my gait, tested my dorsiflexion and re-evaluated my arch length both weighted and un-weighted. Using that data, we picked shoes and inserts that featured qualities that matched my needs - especially my "need" to run efficiently and injury-free, rather than my desire to have a cute looking shoe. I couldn't help but think that Fleet Feet Sports is the "Match.com" of the shoe world.

Once again, mom proves that she does know best: it's what is on the inside that counts. Fortunately, like all good romances, my new sole mate is one hot looking shoe!

Schuyler's Shoe Review: Brooks Cascadia

Schuyler

When I say that I love running, I usually mean that I love trail running. Road running I like; treadmill running I can tolerate in the same way I would tolerate Novocain-free dental work. With weather like we got from Nemo, road running has taken on a few of my favorite aspects of trail running. Despite the minor annoyance of cars, the past few days of road running have involved scenery, obstacles, uneven terrain, and the mental engagement of planning each footfall. The few moments when I let my concentration slip, the one thing that kept me vertical was the fact that my trail shoes were perfectly suited for traction on icy, snowy roads.

Brooks Cascadia - MenThe new Brooks Cascadia 8 is a trail shoe equally suited to slushy "wintry mix." The sole features a multi-directional outsole made of sticky rubber that can adapt to terrain, whether it's muddy trail, wet roots, or your neighbor's poorly-shoveled sidewalk. Most trail shoes feel stiff and brick-like on hard asphalt, but the Cascadia 8 moves to a new midsole that blends in Brooks' DNA throughout the entire foot. This provides a smooth ride that adapts to the firmness of the terrain.

Brooks Cascadia - WomenOther features in the updated Cascadia create greater stability on uneven surfaces. A supportive foam bar running through the heel, combined with a more flexible "caterpillar" crash pad make ankle-rolls less likely. This technology has been proven on unexpected rocks on the trail, but works just as well on patches of snow that turn out to be hiding hard ice chunks.

The upper is not water-repellent, as that can reduce breathability. A tighter mesh ensures that water won't flood the shoe, but what little moisture gets in drains quickly and can be managed with a merino wool sock. For the muddiest or slushiest conditions, however, the Cascadia 8 is gaiter-ready.

Shoe GaitersA running gaiter is a water-resistant sleeve that wraps the ankle and heel collar of the shoe, keeping moisture and debris out. Nothing can make runs through half-melted snow entirely comfortable, but with a set of gaiters on a new Brooks Cascadia 8 you'll be as comfortable as you can get. And good news: our selection of gaiters are on sale for 30% off!

Stacy's Sports Medicine Corner:

The Chair of Death - A Single Glute Assessment Tool

Stacy ProvencherThe Chair of Death - I thought that might get your attention! It's not as scary as it sounds and it's a simple, helpful tool in assessing muscle function. In the last Sports Medicine Corner article, I discussed the gluteus medius and its importance in rotational stability of the hip. Today, the focus is going to be on the gluteus medius' larger counterpart, the gluteus maximus!

Gluetus MaximusThe function of the gluteus maximus during running is to control trunk flexion (forward bending of the upper body) and extend the hip. When this muscle becomes weak or its firing pattern is off (doesn't contract when it's supposed to), it can be detrimental to running.

Many runners may have faulty glutes and not even realize it. Running is still possible because the body compensates to perform the action. Over time, compensation causes muscle imbalances, trigger points in muscles, and overuse injury.

Leaning RunnerWhen the glute is incapable of stabilizing the trunk during running, it allows for trunk flexion. While some forward lean during running is good and necessary, a forward lean due to weak glutes is not good! When the trunk shifts too far forward during running, it brings the center of mass with it.

Chair of DeathIn order to prevent itself from falling forward, the body will try to lean back and get upright again. Compensation occurs by arching the back excessively and over striding to get the foot out in front of the body to prevent the fall. This whole process increases the stress on the ankles, knees, hips, and spine.

Are your glutes firing appropriately? To find out, click here to perform The Chair of Death assessment at home and read the rest of Stacy's article.

We Have an AED!

AEDFebruary is Heart Health Month. Heart disease is the #1 killer among men & women in the United States. Do your part to decrease your risk by having your cholesterol & blood pressure checked, eating right, exercising, limiting alcohol intake, and not smoking.

Despite attempts at a healthy lifestyle, heart attacks do happen. Each year, over 715, 000 Americans suffer from a heart attack. Fleet Feet Sports is proud to announce that we now have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in the store.

An AED is the only way to re-start the heart of a person suffering from ventricular fibrillation. Fall Marathon Training Program

MDI Marathon

Building off the success of the Charlottesville spring marathon, Get Out N Play is creating another exciting destination marathon training program. This fall, we are bringing a group of athletes to Bar Harbor, Maine for the Mount Desert Island Marathon on the doorstep of Acadia National Park. Bar Harbor is a quaint seaside town with scenic New England charm.

The point to point marathon has been hailed as the "Most Scenic Marathon" by Runner's World and runner up for Best Overall Marathon. Over the rolling terrain your eyes will take the beauty of ocean vistas, lakes, forests and quaint villages. It's been called Big Sur of the East.

Participants will arrive in town on Thursday, October 17th and get settled into our rented house, where you'll be spending the next four nights. On Friday, we'll spend the day preparing for the race with yoga, packet pick-up, a course preview and some light sight seeing, followed by a home cooked meal. On Saturday, you have the day to explore the area or just kick back by the ocean with a good book. Sunday is your day to tackle 26.2 miles. We'll head back home after Monday's breakfast (you can leave earlier if you would like).

Training will begin on Sunday, July 14th. The marathon will likely sell out before the end of March, so it's critical that you sign up soon. We'll be training as a group with runs on Wednesday mornings during the summer (and evenings in the fall) and long runs on Sunday mornings. To start, you should be able to run ten miles. Throughout this program, you will have unlimited access to your coaches.

If you are looking to get faster and/or learn about successfully running a marathon, this coaching program will surely move you in the right direction. A fall marathon is a perfect way to close your 2013 season. Come into the race well-prepared and injury-free with a huge foundation to surprise yourself and build confidence in your racing abilities. Make this marathon one for your record books!

Yoga for Runners: Sundays at 5:30pm

(for competitive people who can't easily touch their toes)

Recovery, Sweet RecoverYoga for Runnersy

Your next run is only as good as your last recovery. My favorite go-to recovery pose is Legs Up the Wall. Giving the legs a break after a workout can refresh circulation throughout your lower body.

Leg RecoverySit straight with one hip touching a wall with your legs out in front of you. As you lie back, swivel around and slide your legs up the wall. If needed, wiggle yourself a bit closer to the wall. You can position yourself with your legs straight up the wall with your buttocks against the wall while lying flat.

Spread your arms comfortably wide. For a variation, spread legs wide. To move out of the pose, bring your knees to your chest and roll to one side.

Just $10/class - A portion of the proceeds will go to FoodShare. Please bring a Yoga mat, blanket or towel, and wear comfortable clothes.

Chocolate Mousse - A Valentine's Treat!

By Aubrey Schulz

Get Out & Play - & Soak-up Vitiman DI made this decadent dessert last Valentine's Day and it was a huge hit. I was impressed that I was able to make chocolate taste so rich and dreamy. My husband was smitten that I took the time to make this seemingly fancy dessert.

Who knew it took just three simple ingredients to make a creamy luscious, delectable mousse? While its not difficult to make chocolate mousse, it does require your focused attention. For the 20 minutes it takes you to make this, put your multi-tasking tendencies aside. You will be rewarded for your actions.

To melt chocolate, most recipes have you use a double boiler. This contraption of two pots, allows the warm heated water in the bottom pan to slowly melt the chocolate and prevent it from burning. To avoid purchasing another gadget, I use an old, lime green, 70's style pyrex bowl with handles propped up over the edge of the saucepan. Add enough hot tap water to cover the bottom of the pan, but avoid it reaching the bottom of the bowl. Heat the water until just before it simmers, then turn off the stove.

Place the chocolate bowl over the pot of hot water and gently stir until it is shiny smooth and totally melted, allowing the warmth from the water below to melt the chocolate. The end result is velvety and decadent and the chocolate is not in danger of overheating and thus turning grainy and lumpy.

Chocolate Mousse

Ingredients:

  • 3.5 oz dark chocolate
  • 2 oz milk chocolate
  • 3 egg whites
  • 4 oz whipping cream (or heavy cream)
  • Optional garnish; mint leaves, raspberries, strawberries, shaved chocolate pieces

Directions:

  1. Break the chocolate into pieces and heat slowly in the method described above (The microwave is another option, but the chocolate needs to be closely monitored)
  2. Allow the chocolate to cool slightly.
  3. Whip the egg whites until stiff, so that a cut made with a knife remains visible.
  4. Stir in the warm chocolate.
  5. In a separate bowl, whip the cream. Fold it into the chocolate mixture.
  6. Chill for at least two hours.
  7. To serve, divide the mixture into dessert glass.
