The Dreams (And Nightmares) of Autonomous Vehicles:
A Practitioner's Perspective

Saturday, May 21st - 6:00 PM
Presented by The Penn State Alumni Association

The idea of cars that drive themselves is revolutionizing the automotive industry. Automated
vehicles promise freed driver time, improved fuel economy, and accident-free traffic. Not surprisingly, many manufacturers - particularly in the luxury sector - are pushing to quickly put automated vehicle technologies into customer hands.

This presentation examines automated vehicles and explains their underlying technologies. The proposed benefits may cause significant changes to human behavior, some of which may not be beneficial to society. Community-wide discussion must begin regarding the use and trade offs of automated vehicle technologies, and this talk is meant to begin that conversation.

Dr. Sean Brennan
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Penn State University
Dr. Sean Brennan is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Penn State University, where he leads the Intelligent Vehicles and Systems Group. He is also the director of the Vehicle Systems and Safety Program, an organization of about 40 faculty and staff members involved with Penn State's Larson Transportation Institute who are focused on advancing vehicle technologies, safety, and human-vehicle interaction. His research focuses on vehicle dynamics both at high speeds (highway vehicles) and low speeds (ground robotics), with particular expertise on collision avoidance, the use of maps to assist in vehicle guidance and new methods for assessing driver behavior around autonomous and driver-assist technologies. He has published nearly 100 papers on applications including high-speed police pursuits, vehicle rollover prevention, hybrid vehicles, bomb disposal robots, and even the similar mathematical relationships between brain seizure and traffic jam dynamics.

Don O'Reilly Collection Arrives at the AACA Library

A trailer truck load of literature has arrived at the AACA Library & Research Center in Hershey, PA!

Yes, the completely full, double and triple stacked 54' commercial trailer was full of literature, films and ephemera mostly about the world of racing. This is the collection amassed by the former publisher of Speed Age, Don O'Reilly. The collection was donated to the library by a very good friend and supporter of AACA.

AACA Library Staff catalogs the new donations.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of John Myer.  John was a past National President of AACA and the President of the AACA Museum Board of Directors in 1998 as well as a long time Board Member and huge supporter of the AACA Museum. He will be missed deeply by all of his "AACA Family". RIP John.

We also lost one of our long-time volunteers here at the AACA Museum - Mr. Bob Leonard.
Bob was a very involved volunteer here at the AACA Museum since the beginning and he will be missed by all who knew him.

At our annual CARnival Community Car show each year, Bob would always be here giving rides in one of his antique vehicles. Bob is pictured here in his Rolls-Royce doing what he loved best - driving his antique cars and sharing his passion with others.  RIP Bob.
