California HME Update
ACTION NEEDED!
Contact Members of Congress - Urge to Stop Competitive Bidding

CAMPS has previously reported on the progress made during last week's "fly-in" to raise concerns about CMS' disastrous bidding program. Providers are particularly incensed by the ridiculously low and unsustainable Round 2 prices released in late January that were created by a distorted bidding process.

CAMPS members took immediate action during the our Annual Convention last week by making phone calls to Congressional leaders. Several CAMPS members had their staff help with the phone calls in an effort to support the nationwide Shutdown the Switchboard campaign. Thank you to everyone who participated in that effort!

Additionally, at least two members have reported to CAMPS on meetings they've held with local Congressional District offices. If you have had meetings, let us know how they went. Or if you have a particular connection with one of the key Congressional leaders, let us know. We want to hear from you.

The Battle Continues

While the homecare community has done an excellent job getting the issue on Capitol Hill's radar screen, it's clear that we also need to make stronger efforts to convey just how much damage this program will do to seniors and people with disabilities, as well as the healthcare infrastructure that supports these vulnerable people.

One persistent theme that has run through the feedback AAHomecare has received from fly-in participants is that Congressional staff are well aware of our issues with the bidding program, but some are not convinced of the severity of the problems, or the urgent need for action. Others are uncertain about how much direct impact the bidding program will have on beneficiaries and what harm it will do to other segments of the healthcare delivery system.

How YOU Can Help

As a follow-up to last week's efforts, CAMPS has formed a committee to lobby congressional members against Competitive Bidding. The Committee's first call was this morning.  We have identified nine California members of Congress who serve on the two key committees, House Energy and Commerce and House Ways and Means.   Members of the CAMPS committee will be setting up meetings at the Congressional members' district offices.

Following is the list of members we will schedule meetings with. If you are in or around one of these districts and have an interest in participating in the meeting, please contact the CAMPS office via e-mail at [email protected]. Please have the subject line read: CAMPS Congressional District Meeting.  In the body of your message indicate what Congressional District you are available to meet with. We will then communicate to you once the meetings have been scheduled to confirm your availability.

The CAMPS committee will meet again Wednesday 3/16/13. On this call we will confirm the District meeting schedule and discuss who is available to attend. So let us know before next Wednesday if you are interested in helping.

AAHomeCare is Seeking Provider's Help

We need your help!AAHomecare is gathering stories for a compilation that will be sent to important Congressional members.

Have you heard of bid-winning companies who...

  1. ...have too few staff to adequately fulfill their contracts?
  2. ...are trying to sell off their companies?
  3. ...are exhibiting other strange behaviors?

Can you please let AAHomecare know about these cases?

It's important the Congress understands the true impacts of their bidding program on businesses and beneficiaries. Providers with information should contact Beth Cox at [email protected]  or by calling 866-544-7913.
